I recently had a wheel repaired, exact same damage as in the photo.

The first thing the repair guy has to determine is will the wheel stand up to the repair; that is, is the quality of wheel alloy such that when they apply the pressure on it to remove the damage that the wheel will not crack.

Only then will the repair be done. All these people who say it will only cost $50 or so haven't fully considered the situation (and every wheel is different so you cannot give a blanket price on a fix).

My wheel cost $160 to fix and I was very happy with the job. That was to fix the wheel only - no paint, although the wheel was primed ready for painting.

I did ring around numerous places in Sydney and most quoted over $200 for the repair (I described the damage over the phone, then sent photos via email).

I would recommend these guys (http://www.wheelrepairs.com.au/) as being knowledgeable, offering good service, not cheap-as and a bit out of the way, but I was happy with the job. I haven't used any other service so this is the limitation of my experience. Normally, with rim scrapes I've done the repair myself with sandpapers, wire wheel and paint.

how many wheels were damaged and what sort of damage was it?

Just the one wheel. Same damage as in the photo - outer lip bent slightly, probably a little less than the photo.

I think the guy said they heat treat the area and then use a machine to slowly coax it back into correct shape.

hope this answers your question.

yeah it did, thanks. i have always somehow doubt it would cost $50 like what i've read.
re: heat treat and reshape, doesnt this soften the metal?
metal annealing (http://www.technologystudent.com/equip1/heat3.htm)?

or the heat used to reshape the damaged wheels isnt as high, only to prevent cracking paint?

thanks for the input.
