Common problems in Civics?

might be a stupid quesion, acually, yeah it is...


But are civics (ek) known to have any common problems? for example... late 90s magnas are known for their dodgy handbrakes... that sort of stuff.

It all depends on how well you look after your car which determines its condition. It also depends on the history the car has been through to have any issues.

But in general, eks dont have any common problems to be honest.

Not much at all. Central locking issues is the only common one I'm aware of. Just look for a good example and you'll be fine. Anything that goes wrong would simply be of an annoyance/inconvenience. You won't have anything major.

Si, VTi, GLi, CXi, Vi. All lack in power. Not a problem in most eyes, but to me. It is. =]

civics are well known have the same characteristics of a tank.

i have a auto 1999 ek sedan (that as been badly treated - family car - not mine),
timing belt has never been changed.
has run on no engine oil a few times and serviced once a year maybe more (1 year+)
radiator fluid has gone extremely low. nobody bothered to refill it.
crashed and the front wheel had to be welded back on...

220,000kms and still going

man its all good!

That's it,they are strong as and will just keep going!

But the SOHC engine do get little niggling problems that make the engine not run at it's best,for example:

02 sensor has fouled up and needs replacing
Throttle body issue's i.e. Need to calibrate tps,clean IACV,adjust FITV,MAP sensor can foul up too.

These are normal things that happen but most people wont recognise the problem and just accept it as 'that's how the car is' but if the problems get sorted the engine will run great guns.

What engine U got Hoops, d16y8?

Mine is a 96 EK1 sedan - d16y4 auto.

I've worked on a few SOHC's now and if U calibrate the tps and do the routine things,she will be a great engine.

like:

Suburu upper engine clean
Tappets
Clean points in dizzy and sand rotor edge
clean/replace plugs,set gaps
change fluids/oil filter regulary
Do my TB mod in the DIY section on here :)
and tps adjustment DIY too
Replace 02 sensor if 100,000k
and I/H/E

etc etc :)

actually the gearbox has been slipping for quite some time but isnt really posing a real threat. the car is still a great daily lol

And mine, too. Makes the handling slightly nervous at the rear until they're replaced - luckily my dealer's mechanic spotted it and told me.
