read factory service manuals. will give you an idea of how stuff goes together and what purpose things serve

learn by doing =D
heaps of cool DIY threads here, find something that catches your eye and experiment.

im not great with cars but i installed my c-pillar into my car today. one side looks really shabby and the other looks neat and tidy. =D

I would say learning about cars comes less with just going out and reading but more from experience. Or at least just floating around reading forums for a couple of years.

Theory comes before practical
how can you do diy if you don't know what you're doing!

are u sure u looked at the 'new to cars' thread? there are some good sites under 'how cars work' (the first 2 links don't work) but i don't see how you can 'not learn much' from there.

i also think http://www.carbibles.com/ is good.
but then again i'm pretty nooby at cars too so what i think is good might be crap =/

I learned alot by things breaking and labour being alot of money when I studied lol

sooo much info in both written manuals (nothing beats hard copies, sure pdfs are easy but I have everything printed for ease of reference), pdfs, google searches, because generally at least one person has been in the same problem that you will ever occur, unless it's a brand new model in which case it can take at least two years for legitimate information to surface lol

owning an older Nissan 88-00 will make/force you learn alot, jks jks, lol
