View Full Version : Reversing in the 6mt Euro can be a bitch

I haven't heard anyone else say this so I wonder if it is just my car.

I have just moved house with a really long straight driveway (30 metres or so) and I need to reverse out (insufficient room to turn around). Anyway - when the Euro is cold and I put it in reverse and release the clutch the car shoots off WAY too fast! I have had a few manual cars and this is ridiculous - it is too fast in reverse when cold - I am not even touching the throttle!

It is bitch getting out of the driveway - clutch in clutch out, line it up, clutch in clutch out, line it up. The car goes off line as it is reversing too fast. I've tried braking with the clutch out - but the car hates that when cold and shudders.

The only thing I can think of is to get the engine warm before taking off.

Anyone else notice this? ;)

Yes, I notice that, but didn't realise it's a problem because this is the only manual car I've reversed in.
I just let the clutch slip a little bit to control the speed.
Since you don't usually reverse for a long time, I don't think it'll do too much harrm to the clutch.
Better than shooting off to a shrub anyway. lol

When all cars are started when cold, the revs will be higher and of course when engaged in a gear, it will cause the car to be faster.. same with all the manual cars... :)

Yeah just get in the habit of warming up ur car for 2-5 minutes in the mornings or when on cold start & that should do the trick...

Yeah, I know - car is warming up at higher revs. None of the other manual cars I have driven reverse this quick with no throttle applied. Release the clutch and it just sprints off in reverse - probably 25kph+. My neighbours must think I am in a real hurry backing out of my driveway! It is not that easy to control without stuffing around with the clutch. I could ride the clutch but would prefer not to - would prefer to clutch in and clutch out.

Hmmm - one of those auto starts would be good - if I could trigger that from inside the house I would be set. Is it legal to get one with 6mt?

as far as i know remote start and turn off timers are illegal

Do you think its "wanky" to have a timer on a NA car??

I thought i read somewhere that it's not good to warm up modern cars by letting it idle or am i confusing it with something else?

Yes...yes i do.unless for some unkown reason your car likes to really heat up, like turbo style.

Ride the clutch, its not gonna do that much damage, goddam some cars go for years and years with the original clutch and people slip and ride it like a mofo.

The law states that as long as anyone isn't in the car, the engine has to be off.. so technically.. it's illegal...

Although new cars don't need to warm up, just taking it easy at the beginning of the drive, I still warm it up by taking a ciggy heheheheheh...

As for riding the clutch, there is absolutely no harm in that Yoram.. It's ok.. the clutch will hold nicely... it's still better than dumping a clutch hehehehheheheh

i'd have some mates who'd say otherwise, but each to their own.

I also find when i reverse in the morning or for the first time it's rather.. quick and mum doesn't like that hehe, as my driveway is on an incline so i have to reverse up :|

tho, if i start the car for the first time of the day, i let it run in for a good 10-15 mins, trying not to take it above 4K rpm 5Krpm at most.. but then again, i rarely take it above 5krpm anymore.. as you'd be 100km/h+ by the time you're around 6Krpm ;)

happy holiday guys!

I guess its already said but i'll say it again :)

1. When the car is cold it will idle higher.......so when you engage the clutch fully you will reverse faster than when the engine is warm
2. To solve the 'reversing too fast' problem, just ride the clutch (without giving the gas pedal too much) and that should be all good!

Ummm - just a thought... Couldn't you reverse in when you get home, and then just drive out forwards in the morning. This is what I do because I live at the bottom of a steep driveway.
