spark issue perhaps?
tuanEH?

water around the spark plugs? maybe in the throttle body? similar things have happened to my cars and those were the cause of the problems..

is it misfiring or just spluttering and struggling?
perhaps it could be a fuel issue? what sorta fuel does he use?

spluttering and struggling, 98 fuel only

could possibly be that the fuel filter is blocked which would cause a lack of fuel reaching the engine, try changing that and see how it goes.

do a general service on it. cant hurt
fuel filter. check fuel lines from tank to plenum. sometimes there can be more than one.
sensors. have a look around the engine bay and make sure all plugs and looms are firmly locked into each other and wires are intact and not oil fouled.
spark plugs. i suggest only ever using platinum bosche plugs. they are worth the extra money! they last longer and noticible increase in performance and fuel economy
Spark plug leads. over time they will fail, causing what your describing. replace them with either standard or larger ones or if pockets are deep enough go with spoon spark plug leads :)
just a quick question. is the car spluttering throughout the entire rev range? only when going up hill? hard revving? doing it in neutral?

only through mid range

could be a distributor issue

when i got my half cut from the jap import place, they had to change distributor, so i think thats the problem,
its probably the timing or something.

Got any vacuum leaks? Clogged Injectors? Just brainstorming here. Otherwise It really does sound like an ignition issue. Is the timing set right?
Good luck!
