Hi All

Did not see any recent posts comparing the 2010 Mazda Neo with the 2010 Civic VTI. There is not much to choose between them in terms of price (difference of ~1K). Both have 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, ESC and traction control as standard safety features.

What do you thinks in terms of a better buy and resale value?

Thanks!:)

In term of resale value i would choose Honda Civic. Just do a check by myself on car valuation in RACQ, carguide, ......google
In term of better buy (my own opinion) about interior only and handling i would love to go for Mazda. Seem that mazda are more generous with options and accessories than Honda

the civic has more aftermarket support than the mazda 3 to compensate for the options and accessories ;)

Here's a comparison from the manufacturer's site.:D

Honda:
" Put your foot down and feel the 1.8 litre SOHC i-VTEC engine in both the VTi and VTi-L respond with an impressive 103kw of power and 174Nm of torque.
Or for a little more grunt, try the 2.0 litre DOHC i-VTEC engine in the Civic Sport, delivering 114kW of power and 188Nm of torque for a more powerful drive.
The manual Civic VTi and VTi-L only uses 6.9 litres of fuel per 100km, the auto just 7.2.* The Civic Sport's larger engine uses only 8.3 (manual) and 8.4 (auto) litres per 100km*."

Mazda:
Engine 1,999 cc
Max Power
108 kW @ 6,500 rpm
Max Torque
182 Nm @ 4,500 rpm
Fuel Consumption
From 7.9 litres per 100km

Having driven both, the ride comfort in he civic is far superior. in terms of resale value the civic wins hands down.
Also, IMO the shape of the FD2 is much nicer than the shape mazda offers.

Civic FTW!

Thanks guys. The feedback has been useful.

I am likely to be selling the car in a couple of years time and hence questions around the resale value. Also because NEO has kind of been branded as something unpopular with its previous versions I feel it might be diff to sell one for a good price. Had it been Max or Max Sport probably would be diff; at the same time they are obviously more exp than than the Civic VTI.

Why do you think Mazda has been selling heaps more 3s than Honda has sold VTIs?

Thanks again!

Read on drive.com that Mazda3 is the largest private selling small car in Apr 2010.

I looked up 'fd2' - is it the same body as the VTI?

The quality of the materials of Mazda are meant to be newer than Civic - seems like Honda has been having the same style over last 4 years on the 8th gen VTI?

The 8th generation Civic started from 2006 - present (the 9th generation is forecasted for 2012 release). Basically the same style but in 2009, there was a facelift (front, rear and other changes).

Thanks Koho - what I meant was that the changes have been very marginal and specially the interior is a tad outdated and boring. I like the grey colour compared to black as it makes it look lighter and spacious. Wish they had a beighe combination like they have in the euro.

basically the FD2 is the FD1 with slightly wider fenders to make room for the K20 engine in the sport , instead of the R18 in teh VTi and VTi-L's

i read somewhere once hta the mazda 3 was australia's best selling car, overtaking the commdore... They obviously sell more because of the value for money presented.

Keep in mind though, they will eventually flood the market, and although yours may be in perfect condition, you may have to sell for cheaper.

oh and honda's typical car life cycle is about 5 years before it'll undergo a complete change... the mazda 3 was around from 04-09, so it's the same thing!

Thanks Curtis..the model durations is years each and you are absolutely spot on..however considering that mazda has the new one already while civic will come in next year, does it mean that the 8th gen civics will be out of flavour when we are selling compared to the new mazda3.

Thanks for your help guys - any more thoughts are welcome. Looks like there is a general consensus that the civic holds up value better than mazda3 though lacks slightly on the interior functionality (e.g. steering mounted audio controls) compared to Mazda3. Though I like that the handles are body coloured and do not stick out like the Neo!

at the end of the day...i suppose it boils down to how you feel behind the wheel = ) personal preference! all the best with your purchase

Steering wheel mounted audio controls are no problem you can't install yourself without too much hassle

From what i've heard, the 9thcivic won't be here soon, it's got some serious development issues following the GFC, so it may be postponed a bit (i.e. you won't see it in 2011 i think)

the 9th gen civic is projected to be released in 2012..so i reckon it will arrive in australia late 2012/2013....depending...its still pretty much under development right now.

there are alot of 'concepts' on how the 9th gen will look like....just search on the internet and you will find some interesting photos...

Bearing in mind that Honda is going to go for 'lighter weight", "futuristic" and the new CRZ is definitely "futuristic" enough...;) Sorry to Hijack your thread with all these photos. haha
