it could be ur spark plugs.
your car could be running off only a few cylinders instead of 4

put it on a scanner see if any of your sensors have gone dead..
i had same problem well still do around 3000rpm mark i get lag then anything over 3100 3200 rpm car feels normal and revs on tuned out being my throttle position sensor (tps)
is it a vti-r or type r?

i have a similar problem with my ef8, around 3000rpm it starts to misfire a bit and after 4k rpm it goes back to normal, and i'm only getting 370km to a full tank when it should be about 470km. Let me know whats causing this problem

I would put my bottom dollar on a faulty or unalighned TPS (Throttle Position Sensor)

common symptoms of a blocked cat:

restricted power - seems like you accelerate, but car's going nowhere.
poor fuel economy.

both are things you have mentioned.

if i'm not mistaken, if you're running rich, it may shorten the life of the cat.

have you checked your ignition timing?

to configure the tps, use the guide
http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?120191-DIY-Calibrating-the-Voltage-on-the-TPS&highlight=tps

not that hard..

your tps may not just need to be configured..most times its just dead just dead

just hook your car up to a scanner and you will know the problem easy as that if nothing comes up start looking somewhere else.
