View Full Version : Best transmission for a D15b7?

hey all - dont know if this is the right place to post this but here goes...

i have a D15b7 with 300k kms on the clock, it has a USDM D16a6 cam and basic bolt ons ... always looked after, serviced well, fussed over etc

after having a bumpy ride for a while, i checked my shocks and they were dead, so i replaced them ... but the bumpy ride was still there ggrrr

after driving normally for 5mins (didnt even get to put my foot down) i was pulling out onto a highway in 1st gear and the car just started free revving ...
the transmission feels fine, the clutch still has spring, and the engine still runs ... but when i release the clutch while in gear it just revs with no drive to the wheels

i got towed back to my mechanics house and he pulled it apart again to have a look at it ... he said that the input shaft could be dead but he will have to investigate further, this could account for the bumpy ride i was getting

either way he told me to start pricing up transmissions from the local wreckers

whats the best transmission i can get for this engine? what will fit?
i tried a quick search but my search-fu is weak

if someone could point me in the right direction i would be greatful =)

my build thread for more info ...

The Si is the best > Vti > GLi. I shall have a D15B7 tranny in a few weeks for your takings, needs new clutch but runs so so smooth doesn't slip or nothing

whats the name of the engine from the australian SI?

u can take from d16y7/8 engine then put 1st and 3th gear from CRX great setup ;P

The Si is the best > Vti > GLi. I shall have a D15B7 tranny in a few weeks for your takings, needs new clutch but runs so so smooth doesn't slip or nothing

whats your reasoning behind that?

The gli and Vti box are almost the same, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, reverse, and final drive are identical. So unless you plan on hitting insane speeds in 4th and 5th gear theres little variation

im looking for a stronger box with more performance in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, ... i only cruise on the highway in higher gears ... so thats no concern - and i never go over 110km/h lol

i will be needing a new box .. so i just thought if there was a slightly better one i would get that instead of the D15b7

so is the D16y8 box the best?

d16y7 thats what i think, with 1st,3rd from crx they are more agressive, so u will gain some extra torque
2nd is ok u no need to change, 4th and 5th are long so good for motoway ;)

The D16Y1 VTi box is a very good box. You can flog it around the track and it will hold up to constant VTEC engagement even with a free flowing exhaust. Get yourself an EXEDY clutch setup to match it. I'm talking about the 21 spline job not the 20 spline.

i dont have vtec lol

im thinking the D16y8 gearbox with exedy clutch kit + fidanza light flywheel ... will this work?

TheSaint

well i just priced the D16y8 + D15b7 gearbox's from wreckers in perth and they are both around $800 =/

Dont get a Y8 box.. has tall ratios yo !!

D16Y1 (EG5 VTi) has the shortest ratios of any D-series... including 'ZC' DOHC as far as I know.

but dont forget you're in the country and short ratios suck for the open road.. you'll be buzzing along at about 3000RPM at 100km/hr in 5th !!

TheSaint

either way i cant find a box cheap enough around here so i might just get my OEM one repaired ... sigh

gearboxes are rarely 'cheap'.. IF u find a 'cheap' box.. it's either allready fkd... or on the way out.. or a mystery bag that could go at any time..

the best way is to buy from someone liek HONBITS who will guarantee their parts.. so if it dies 400m down the road after u install it, they will replace it. so this means u might pay $800-1000 or whatever.. but u only pay it ONCE.

used gearboxes are like goin to the casino yo - you're just gambling.

have you got a quote to fix your gearbox ? LMFAO it's prob like a grand to rebuild a honda box with new bearings etc..

basically with car parts and most things in life - you get what u pay for.. i've been there and taken the povvo route and believe me - u are sooo much better to spend a little more the first time and get a good result !!

this is like when i talked to you before about building up the SOHC Non-VTEC.. u throw a few grand at it and u will be lucky to get the result of a stock AUS B16A.. where you could have spent less money and swapped a B-series and had more power and from a STOCK base powerplant !

it's all good to rock the D-series NON-VTEC.. u might love that little motor (i loved my Y1 !!) but when that B18C or even B16A hands your ass to you on a plate.. you wont be waving the D-series flag up above your head :) so this is why IMO you need a long term, stagered plan for the car - or you will just be burning money.. is cool if you DO have all that extra coin.. try every combination under the sun.. but if u had that much coin u wouldnt be driving a honda.

have u driven a B-series or K-series yet ??

what are the ratios of the crx 1st and 3rd?

if i good remember they are:

:D

if i good remember they are:

:D

all EG gearboxes (Gli, VEI, VTI) have a 1st gear ratio of 3.250, so no point swapping that over

I also think only the B-series CRX box has a 3rd gear ratio of 1.346. Unless B-series gears are interchangeable with D-series boxes it wont work

yeah i used to have a Dc2 ... the b18c is fun =)
i drive a freinds FG XR6 all the time, i help another mate tune his GD WRX and i drive my mechanics GC8 WRX all the time, i also have a Liberty Rx2.5 as well

so far the car has cost me stuff all to build and its been heeps of fun ... i really dont care about power or racing ... i enjoy it for myself

but this is looking like the big killer ... even when it is fixed and i finish off the last few things on the car i think ill be putting it up for sale to get something a bit newer and reliable

either way i cant find a box cheap enough around here so i might just get my OEM one repaired ... sigh

just buy a written off car and take the gearbox out of it and sell of whats left over.

good idea ... but i dont really have the time or space =/

Does the D16A8 box fit? I thought it wasn't compatible because it's DOHC.

I'd get a Y1 box personally.

it doesnt fit because of different input shaft and housing size, not because its dohc.

That's not what I meant. I meant that SOHC and DOHC aren't compatible, not because of their cams, but that that was a good rule to remember when considering interchangeability.

Saint if you're happy to settle for a D15 tranny there's a couple of manuals at the car-yard near me, or I can try a wrecker or two. Hondwreck is pretty decent.
