Hi, I've retitled your thread to something more appropriate.

The thrust bearing is located outside the gearbox (although you have to unbolt the gearbox from the engine to get to it). A noisy / whiny gearbox could be the ISB or something else inside the box. So if you paid him to change your thrust bearing and he did, then it wouldn't address any issues to do with the ISB.

so it has done the right job or he could of just ripped me off?

also while driving home the car lost a cylinder and now in idle its running on 3 cylinders but over 1500 revs its fine...??? i dont have seller rights yet or i would sell it! i also paid him to fix teh head gasket which i beleive is fixed but it still blows smoke?

... wtf ? sounds like you have a really problematic vehicle.
Head gasket, check the oil and what colour smoke?
Does the g/box noise vanish once you depress the pedal?
overall it may very well be cheaper to replace the box to a 2nd hand or reconditioned one then having to replace the ISB which in turn may require other components to fix.

the smoke is white but i think he may of just put too much oil in.... the noise when i press on it vanishes for a second then it comes back agaiun... it was exactly the same before i had the thrust bearing fixed...... how much am i lookin at for a second hand gearbox??? would it pass RWC with a windy gearbox?

er i am no specialist in gearbox costing, you may want to ring around (wreckers, gearbox reco shops, ect.) and see what they are offering and make sure they give you some sort of warranty with it.

er how did you come to that conclusion? it may be salvageable, but yeh D series tend to be very cheap nowadays so you may be better off with a different engine, get an independent mechanics opinion before you start engine shopping.

Why did you think you could diagnose the issue, that was your first problem. For a small fee you could have had the mechanic diagnose it and fix the issue. Pretty silly, that's why they're professionals.

If you want to keep the current car/engine i would recommend getting the problems properly diagnosed before trying to repair anything else.
