Hi guys, this is my first car (borrowed family car for years, as u can see green p's.....) i got it for $4,700 with 150,000 on it. Guy told me head gasket was blown couple of months back its been fixd but looking at the front bumper it looks like its been replaced, but revs said no accidents recoreded on this car,so i bought it.

Wanted to get the whole exhaust system done, iv heard that some exhausts and headers decrease HP???
so what type of headers are good and how many inches should the piping, iv see 2'1/2 exhausts on civics and integras sounds 2 loud.
bit of a noob.. haha anyways thanks.

Mate looks to be a pretty good buy for 4700 dollars. Good stuff.
Other people would give better advice than me on headers and exhaust, but I'm in a similar position (considering exhaust and headers for my dc2). Most headers do add power but there would be some poorly designed ones that will lose you power. Headers are rather exxy though for the good ones. Toda ones cost the better part of 2000 dollars but are considered the best around. Xforce have seen proven gains in all instances i've read about them and are a good value header worth looking at. Exhaust for your car (depending how much other work you're looking at doing to it), a 2" 2.25" or 2.5". I think 2.5 would be overkill on an otherwise stock car. Keep in mind that a well designed mandrel bent 2inch would probably flow better (and sound better) than a shoddily constructed welded 2.25 or 2.5. Somebody else I'm sure will provide more advice..
Well done on the car though.

Nice car! My first car was exactly the same colour and model lol.
To answer your question, No... headers and a exhaust does not lower HP lol. If you get branded ones like Spoon, Toda, Xforce, etc... you will see power increase. On my old Vti-R i had spoon 4-2-1 header, JDM high flow cat and a mugen twinloop catback system (2.5inch), the power difference from stock was a big difference! The stock exhaust and intake are very restrictive. With piping size on the exhaust, i wouldnt go bigger then 2.5inch as you would probably lose power if you go higher then 3 inches...2.5 is perfect imo.
Before you buy a catback system you have to ask yourself if you want a Loud or decent sounding exhaust. An example of loud would be the Buddyclub Pro spec III and a decent one (quite down low and screams up high) would be a Mugen twinloop or Fujitsubo RM01A/Powergetter.
With headers you have to take into consideration ground clearance if your planning to lower your car as some headers may hang pretty low and also the pipeing structure...4-1 or 4-2-1.... 4-1 is better for High end power and 4-2-1 is better for low-mid range power.
Hope this helps =)

No that was not his question, and some aftermarket headers and exhaust designs can most definitely be worse than the factory package, this is also true for any other part of the car especially air intake and suspension.
Good way to make sure you don't pay for someone to fabricate you something like a header based on the design of a straw is not to cheap out. Use reputable and proven brands which are easily identified through information on forums...if the cheapest parts available are in mind when looking for upgrades the best way to avoid taking a backwards step is to keep the car stock standard and save some money and performance :)

I think i have covered in what he was asking, and i did say that you would NOT lose power IF YOU GET BRANDED ONES LIKE SPOON, TODA, XFORCE
thanks

^ True when compared to stock, doesnt answer above question but, which is what i was refering to

^^ see above
ps. btw, xforce loses a bit top end and gains low-mid range. So if by lose power you meant top end power, than it does lose power

LOL whatever dude, im trying to help this guy out here from my experience with after market exhausts for a vti-r and your here breaking down my sentences and examining them and trying to be the "guru".
Enjoy

I don't need to break down your sentances or examine them further than a glance to see that you didnt answer that part of the question. Aftermarket headers and exhausts can definately decrease performance from stock if they are a shitty design and you contradicted that and its important for people to know that it can be the case, that's why I made it clear by outlining what you said not because I am a "guru". That being said the information is now there and im not going to push that point, as that's not very productive for the OP

+1 With Lowiez.
There are definately branded exhausts that are completely useless.
Its pretty clear that some companies do no research or testing into their products.
The classic example is 5Zigen Exhausts.
Look here:

Bottom line is that you should stick to not only 'branded' ones but those with a decent reputation and proven performance.
Btw if you're looking for an exhaust definately do not go more than 2.25 - 2.5 piping diameter (unless you plan to do alot of work on the engine).
I reckon 2.25 is more than enough for a DC2. Any larger and you may lose bottom end power.
