Hey guys, i was driving up to laverton north this morning and a second before the domain tunnel (on one of the metal plate strips on the road) blew a tyre... i think there was a bolt loose or something sharp and it blew a 20c coin hole into my stock RE040s....
The other tyres need replacing soon but i was just wondering if anyone here has used any Sumimoto, Yokohama Advan Sport or S.4 and Potenzas and whether you can tell me which ones are good, cheap price, where you can get good deals?
Standard rim probably at 225/45R17
Thanks

Best way to get good deals is to find tyre shops that are within a km or 2 of each other. Get a price at one and then ring up the other one to price match. Depending how low you want to go and if you want to run the risk of pissing one of the shops off, keep going back and forth 2-3 times.
If your on a budget for tyres, extend your selection into maxxis, toyo, nexxcen (last resort) etc etc.

not that much of a budget but if possible i want to spend around 150 per tyre. Is it possible to get Advan S4, Sport or S-Types for that much? My cousin bought Sumitomo tyres he said were much cheaper than the standard Potenza 040s.....I heard you can get RE-11s from Costco for $250 each.

225 45 17 Michelin Pilot Sport 3, $238 each fitted from Jaxquickfit.
If you want best performing tyre, Continental Sports Contact 2 or 3, but not cheap yet still cheaper than RE040. OEM on Merc's / VW's.
Potenza RE040 would cost you >$350 each, but only people who don't bother spending any time looking at other options would buy these from Bob Jane at $400 (and this is what keeps Bob Jane profitable)
If on budget, Kumho KU31 should cost $125 each.
I would avoid anything lower than Kumho KU31.
If you want some price comparisons info, go to tirerack.com, convert it to AUD and you can roughly see if the prices quoted by your tyre shop is reasonable or a total rip off. I was quoted a Sumitomo HTR Z III at AU$230 each yet in US it's only US$99 each (AU$ 110).

Michelin PS3 are good. Bridgestone RE001 are supposed to be decent too if you want to keep it Bridgestone - cheaper, and better than the standard RE040 tires for comfort and wet handling.
Plenty of tire info if you search the forum.

Thanks Guys...
If you know anyone who has Costco membership and can be bothered going to the city (if you live in melbourne) we can get RE-11s for $250 each. Which are pretty epic considering they are nominated no.1 on tyre rack..
I was looking for yokohama advans because theyre like no.7 in the list.
Does anyone here use Kendas? can i get some feedback?

i have been quoted roadstone and silverstones for $130 fitted on 17s. Silverstones arent bad apparently. my bro has 2 of them on his EP3R and although theyre no RE-11s he says theyre good tires. Where can you get Kumho KU31s for $125? is that fitted? and im in melbourne so any place down here?

Bridgestone Potenza RE040s cost about $300 bucks at the shops. Although they are good tyres tirerack rates 040 lower than the equivalent kumho or sumitomo. Just because they cost under $200 wont mean they are inferior..in fact im kind of disappointed with the 040 wear. It was my dad's euro before mine and he drove it for 67000kms lightly. Now some of you might say wow 67000kms in 3 years for one set of tyres is good...But actually its rated much lower than Kumho KU31s, Sumitomo HTR Z and ZII and much much lower than the Yoko S.Drives...Im surprised Honda fits RE040s as OEM

The RE040 are an awesome tyre... didnt last me that long... maybe 50k but thats not bad considering how i drive. Anyways i changed my wheels at the same time. If there's one thing i dont cheap out on is tyres. I've always had good tyres on my car ever since i drove (had a bad experiences on el chepo Ling longs) And to that as well, i've always had Bridgestones. People say the RE001 are a bang for buck tyre and yes it is infact i've got them on my car atm. When these are done i'm looking to go into so me Yokohama's S.Drives, Will never trust Toyo's again, although my parents european car has Continentals Contact Sport 3 and they are an awesome tyre... but $$$ Anyways if u want bang for buck get RE001 want better i'd prolly go S.Drives.

Bridgestone seem to be running a $70 cashback scheme when you buy 4 17" tires at the moment.
