hey guys,

today i was offered a straight swap for my 94 vti.. the guy offered me his sss sr20. it was lowered on king springs, i/h/e, cf bonnet and had a dc5 type r kinda blue paintjob with 17" ricer rims. his cars on 280xxx k's. i was thinking it might not be too bad if i changed the rims but the high k's put me off a little, although my civic is on 240xxx.

what do u guys think?

Depends what you want. His thing is rice as.

You could sell his 17" rims, his CF bonnet. Get some $$$.

SR20 is a far superior motor to any D-series. It's pretty tough, goes hard, and has huge potential.

Personally I'd be tempted.

lol dougie i was thinking the same.. 2MPRS and IEVAQ8 had me convinced on keeping my civic, but your tempting me! he told me his clutch was slipping a little.. how much do you reckon it would be to replace it? if its not too much i might consider it

straight swap means you are at no great loss, but if his sss seems better than your VTi why does he want to swap? just how I would consider it.

having owned a SSS there loads of fun, but most are thrashed - i'd be taking it for a big test drive

Is this someone you know of, friend? or just some random off the street? Personally i'd stick with the civic as I'll know my own car better, and prefer the look. both are old cars so you never know whats wrong.

Take it for a drive and see what you prefer, eg, vtec, sunroof etc. If you love the civic, keep it man. You'll regret for sure if you swap.

You car would be valued more then the SSS, i was looking into them for a mate, and we found one for 2,000$ fully functional and everything with 160*** k's so good luck but id say stick with Honda at the end of the day the parts are endless. Good Luck :)

Sounds like it was a lemon. That's pretty much like finding an EG6 for $3000, no?

I bought my '94 EH9 VTi with 169k KMs for $6000 about 2.5 years ago, and thee N14 SSS was a good $6500-7500 around then so I figured they'd be at least $5g for a decent one.

Either way, if you can do a leak-down test to check the motor's health I'd take it over a D-series Civic any day if I had my time again. Twin cam is much preferable to single, and the SR20 is a monster waiting to be let out. It's like 100kw stock and you can pull an easy 10-15kw with I/H/E untuned, and the torque curve is good for a 2L.

Some random at the light? Sounds mad suss..

i was a SSS junkie at one point...

right now its kinda impossible to find a decent SSS.. all of them are thrashed yes you can get a new motor for about less then 1g.

You're kidding me right? You're considering a car from some guy who wanted to RACE you? Sounds like the car has definitely been thrashed like crazy...

i reckon you'd be happier with the civic than the sss

stick with what you have and what you know imo

let alone he was a random at the lights wanting to race is dodgy enough lols

civics have better suspension setup than nissans, only thing goin for the pulsar really is the 2 liters, other than that, there not that impressive.
The first gen SR20 had flat spots when reving, ur better off getting the newer N15 SSS.... few mates of mine have early gen SSS, an there not that great in terms of engines, problems after problems... unless its a S13 or GTIR Sr20det dropped in, than honestly, stick to civic...

BUT if u jus wanna go straight line get the pulsar, 2.0 vs 1.6? go for pulsar..... civic ftw for track/twisty roads

If ur really after pulsar, id say go all out and get the JDM VZ-R pulsar, nissan answer to EK9

Most SSS drivers are wankers, no offence, but most of em iev encounterd are arrogant ppl, who think there pulsars are just as good as skylines/silvias

Don't swap, sss has shit all resale value (especially with that amount of kms) atleast with your civic if you decided to sell you could offer it up on here and someone would snap it up and do an engine swap.

K24 frankie your civic ;) your answer to beating the pulsar

without offending any Nissan lovers... i'd just like to say "NO NO NO NO NO NO and NO!"... Honda's are always over-engineered because thats what honda does... don't swap it... a change is as good as a holiday, but if u swapped for a nissan pulsar u'd be going on a holiday on a one way plane ticket to woodridge (anyone from brisbane will know what i mean)... the novelty will wear off and u'll miss ur honda...

i agree with 57U-00 ... the quality in my EG beats the crap out of my mates SSS and my other mates NX

much nicer interior as well lol

and the induction roar on my civic beats the crap out of both of their cars too lol

a well driven honda will beat a badly driven nissan ... i still win out agains 2.0ltr lancer and nissan mates lol and iv got 1.5ltr an no vtec

tbh i cant imagine that the sss would be any quicker than ur car anyway. Power to weight would be very, very similar.

cihanvtec
27-07-2010, 05:35 PM
yeahh i think the pulsar weighs around 1200 with roughly 105 kw.. my car weighs 1090 with roughly 98kw + i/h/e. i think i will be keeping my civic! although the sr20 may have more potential i dont know what problems it may bring up.. like some of the guys here said, atleast i know my car! but i still might take it for a test drive xD

dougie_504

98kw on a D16? I think the D16 was never released with more than 96kw at the fly. I/H/E won't really do anything to that power figure anyway.

The SR20 is twin cam, and if it's healthy will wax a D16 SOHC no worries.

But I prefer Hondas anyway :)

^^^ i actually disagree, when i had my 107kw DOHC B18B2 i found it slightly faster than SR20 SSS and was near identical in speed to a Vti EG. Ofcourse once modded, a bigger DOHC engine will have more potential.

Interesting. My brother's B18B Integra runs good quality I/H/E and my EH VTi isn't really a match. Have never had a run with an SR20 though, but again I think it depends on engine health, driver etc.

comparing B18 to Sr20 isnt really fair... Sr20 is pretty ancient tech compared to B18.... but for comparison sake, B20 vs SR20 should be more evenly matched..... to spruce the game even more, how about Sr16ve head on SR20 and B16/20 battle?

For me I think it'd be hard to resist the novelty temptation of having an SR16VE mmmmmm :D

But B20VTEC who could refuse...

both Frankenstein swaps are evenly matched, though i wouldnt really know which would be better, id still go for SR16/20 conversion, purely cause of turbo reliability and also rarity of it compared to B16/20

57U-00

rarity is a novelty thing, and could prove unreliable... could be better to stick with what u and everyone else knows...

SR20 are great engines
but in terms of reliability CA18 wud be better
