Ok, Thought i'd start a thread on my 4th gen VTiR.
I'll describe my build so far, and try to keep things moving for the future.

First of all, my car was actually given to me as a reward for work I put into the family business.

She is a Maroon 94 VTiR. Her name is Trinity. (Named after the character in the Matrix movies)

When I got her, I was a total Honda noob.
She was in pretty good shape, totally stock. except for a K&N pod filter, A set of King Super lows on Koni's, an a set of Racing Heart 17' rims.

This was her back then.....

http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/12092008674.jpghttp://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/28112007056.jpg

I was happy with her, and hadn't realy considered modifying her beyond perhaps the sound system. (Some might say I should have stayed with that idea. LOL)

Bt then some woman decided to modify her front end with her Volvo. :(

http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/03152009019.jpg

So, instead of simply repairing the standard front bar, I decided on a Hiro lip.

http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/04182009113.jpg

This was about the time I caught the bug. I started searching for 4th gen ludes which caught my eye, and found this example from the states.

http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/Prelude201.jpg

I knew then what had to be done, So I set about doing it, slowly but surely.
Some may not like where I have taken my girl Trinity. But she's MY girl. And I love her.
I'll post up more progress tomorrow,

Now that I had the big front bar, the back end looked out of balance. Also, at speed, I noticed the car had become "twitchy". and this got worse the faser I went. till the car was almost dangerous at anything over 180km/ph.
After talking to a very knowlagable person. (Ask me about the full story some time. it's a crack up) I decided to fit a GT style rear wing.
I had been looking around a while, and I had seen a wing which had mad me laugh over and over, untill I baught it.
I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Some LOVE it, some HATE it.
Me...?? Luckily.... I LOVE it...! And on top of everything, it stopped the "twitching" I had been suffering at speed. (Aerodynamic Oscolation)

This is when I started considering the flame job. YES...!! You heard me right. A FLAME JOB....
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/Ludecifer.jpg

And to make it funny....
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/Signature.jpg

Luckily, for the future of me, my car, this thread, and any dignity I had left, This was also when I STOPPED considering the flame job....... LMAO

Anyhow, Been a long day today, I'll update much more tomorrow......

That glowing wing looks pretty special
Some green neons on the sideskirts would set it off well and a knight rider red l.e.d in the front bar

btw where do you drive 180kmh?

I HAD a set of red neons. But all that have survives is the rear. Which i'm not even sure i'll replace.

And Naturally, the only place I get to those speeds is on a track day......

Always been meaning to ask, did you use the lexus boot fogs/brake lights for your lexus style boot fogs/brake lights? Never seen another lude with it in my life.

Before I get hurried along any further, (thanks egotzm...LOL)
I'd seen a few attempts at Skyline rear lights on a 4th gen lude, So I decided to give it a shot myself. This was the same time that I was fitting the wing, and I was looking for a new boot lid which I could shave the holes from the standard spoiler and fit the GT wing. Found a boot lid on ebay being sold buy the same guy I got the Hiro lip from, and baught it. When I turned up to pick it up, I realised it already had the lights in the boot lid and a set of modified tail lights in an attempt to Skyline the rear end.

http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/04302009153.jpghttp://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/04302009154.jpg
Though, they didn't realy do it for me, and I decided to just go with the stockies for the time being....

http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/04302009157.jpghttp://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/04302009158.jpg

About time I turned some attention towards the interior.....??

ThePacman
28-07-2010, 09:27 PM
The interior was stock, but clean and in good shape. So I had to make a start. I thaught about colour, and decided on good old Red on Black. I added a hand stitched red leather boot and I covered the center console lid.
In the second pic here you can see the LCD sunvisor I tried for a while.

http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/12092008678.jpghttp://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/Image059.jpg

A few weeks later I put a bid on a pair of seats on ebay, assuming I would be out bid. But to my shock, I wasn't, and I fitted them shortly after.
I also decided to cover all the speakers in a maroon material. Just for fun, wasn't sure if it would stick. but it's still there, so I must like it.
You can also see the 7' touch screen headunit I currently have.

http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/10102009125.jpghttp://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/08022009301.jpg

Then, I trimmed the door inserts. This was an easy mod. and put a smile on my face. I am intending re-trimming these one day and adding personalised decals of some type. Still to this day' i'm trying to figure out what.

http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/22102009157.jpghttp://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/22102009160.jpg

This is pretty much where the interior is at the moment. I am going to trim the center console in the rear in red, and perhaps do something with the seats themselves. But at this point in time, I have bigger fish to fry......

LOL.... Dude, the flames were just a photoshop experiment. My son wanted me to do a flame job on the car. I did that up to show him how wrong it would be. It worked.

Sorry about the hurry along, i was drunk and didnt read your reply properly, i thought you were telling me to explain more clearly LOL.

As said before i would have gone a different way with some of the mods but isnt that what modifying is all about? Building a car that's to your tastes?

So props for doing that! and im glad you decided against the flame job (or rather your son did) looks worse then a toilet that's be upper decked and flushed.

Well it's kinda had a life of it's own. Seems that most of the mods i've made have sorta come to me.

But it has gone the way i've wanted it too. Without me having to blow my budget.

Next thing that drove my build was a Lancer up the ass.
Yes, Just as the Volvo had brished and ruined my front bar, A Lancer rear ended me and forced me to replace my ear bar.
The panel shop quoted $300 to get a new bar, So I went looking for an after market bar to my liking for around that price.
Thats when my luck struck again and I found a local guy parting out a 4th gen whichhad a near new full body kit and a 2.5 inch stainless exhaust. (mine had been damaged also) and I got the lot, (Front bar, rear bar, side skirts and exhaust) for only $300. a fraction of what they were worth.
On top of that luck, the front bar was almost exactly what i'd wanted. (like the lude with the white tribal flame job) But the side skirts were nothinglike what I wanted, So I fitted the parts I wanted, and kept looking for the side skirts I had my heart set on.
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/09072009409.jpghttp://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/09072009415.jpg

These are the side skirts John West rejects.....
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/09102009099.jpghttp://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/09102009097.jpg

Mesh up the grills and the front and rear bars are finished.....
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/10102009119.jpghttp://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/10102009115.jpg

I searched everywhere for a pair of Black Widow side skirts, finally found a second hand pair in Sydney. I bought them and got them shipped.
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/28052008154.jpg

When they arrived, I realised they were very badly damaged. Not a real issue for me, I was a boat builder, working in the mould shop as a laminator. fiberglass is something i'm very comfortable with. So I test fitted the skirts.
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/17112009192.jpg
Decided they were a fraction too low, and went to work.
I trimmed around 20mm off the height of them to give me a little more ground clearance, and layed them up again with around 1500g/m2 of bouble biaxial glass. Now, they ain't gunna break in a hurry.... LOL

First of all, I fixed the origonaltop edge to a piece of timber, to keep everything lined up and straight while I re-laminate the skirts.
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/29112009225.jpg

Then I layed up the inside of the skirts, making them as strong as I thought they should be. (I recoment this to anyone fiting side skirts.)
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/29112009227.jpghttp://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/29112009229.jpg

Then fill and prime,
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/03122009247.jpg

Colour coat.
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/03122009250.jpg

And clear.
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/03122009249.jpg

Then I fit, mesh the grills.
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/next8.jpghttp://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/next6.jpg
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/next5.jpghttp://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/Avit-2.jpg

And my body kit is just about the way I always wanted it.

Next, Time to build the susspension, and then I turn my attention towards the under side of that bonnet.......

I understand what your saying, I personally am not a fan of the style of bonnet you have on your car, but if you like it, love ya work!

And who am I to speak, I haven't even started on my bonnet yet. I am planning a simple vented bonet to help keep the engine bay cool once the snail is in place. and I already own a pair of gards which just need to be re laminated (so i'm happy with the strength.) painted and fitted.

http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/PREBODYKIT_FRONT.jpg

I think they will fit nicely with the style (or lack there of) of the car.

This is also VERY close to the way I want my bonnet. but I want my vent a fraction ferther foward, so it will be directly over the turbo..... (turbo coming soon...)

Another thing I haven't mentioned yet is my disgust for the way fiberglass is layed up for car parts.
It's almost (if not always) only ever layed up in Chopped strand mat. (CSM). CSM is supposed to be a layer between strong weaves of glass material (Biaxial or Double Biaxial). CSM is basically the glue between these layers. not supposed to be used as the entire layup. So when ever I get a new fiberglass part. I give it a quick grind up inside and relaminate the entire part. The bottom section of my front bar is about 10 times stronger than usual, but onlu about 50% heavier. also I have added a 3mm aliuminium sacrificial scratch plate to the bottom edge of the bar.
We all know our front bar is going to scrape one day. But I know when mine does. it will do very little damage if any. this method DOES work, and works well. I have hit my front bar on cruises in a way which would mean the end of a standard fiberglass bar, without doing any damage what so ever.

My girl had a quality muffler when I got it. But still had a stock size exhaust.

As I said before, as part of one of my many 'scores' I got myself a 2.5 inch mandrell bent system with the current cannon.
The exhaust is almost uncomfortably loud at times. But it performs very well. I am considering getting the system duplicated from the rear wheel back very soon. But i'm not sure what kind of tipps I want.
I'll post a video where you can hear the exhaust note soon....

But yeah i think i may get dual exhaust to fill both sides of the new bumper, im just tossing up between getting two small cannons or two dual tip mufflers and probably just in a mid range brand such as xforce or something along those lines

Ok, The next thing I turned my attention to was the suspension and handling.
Once again I scoerd a bargine which just about had me entirely set up.

1st. A set of KYB AGX 4 way adjustable gas shocks.
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/next3.jpg

2nd. Ground Control coil overs. (6kg spring rate on the front, 4kg spring rate on the rear)
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/GetAttachmentaspx.jpg

3rd. A White Line rear sway bar. Which has been double clamped to re-enforced sway bar brackets. Which you can see in the above pic.

4th. Spoon Strut Braces, front and rear.
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt272/007Pacman/next1.jpg

Together with the 17' Racing Hearts the car had on it when I got it. wrapped in 215/45/17 Bridgstone Potenzas, this is the setup i'm running at the moment. and I have NO intensions of changing anything. As it is, it is simply FUN! Sharp, responsive and it has a great feel.

As you can see in the above pic. I have chosen the plastic in front of the windscreen, under the bonnet, as the place I am going to put all the stickers of the performance parts I fit. the list started with those 2 in the above pic. and is growing rapidly.

Not sure that snail is big enough mate LOL.

This has been debated before, I'll throw it open here and get opinions.

Remembering what my power targets are, and I believe them to be fairly realistic. (Another topic open for debate here, don't be afraid guys, speak up FFS)

My power targets are. 220-250 FWHP on low boost, stock internals.
After forged build with 2490cc stroke, 320-350 FWHP.

Full specs on the turbo are as follows.

Dual ball bearings,
Good for up to 400hp
Compressor,
Ind/Exd 54/71
trim 56
A/R 0.60

Turbine,
inducer 54,
Trim 76
A/R 0.86

I'm going to run a liquid to air intercooler, and should only end up with around 5CF of charge air, so I expect to be making boost from around 2500rpm.

This is the intercooler i'm looking at...

Now, as my timing belt service was due, I had to replace the timing belt, Balance shaft belt and water pump.

I decided it would worth while putting down a few extra $$$ and getting a Gates Racing Balance shaft belt and Greddy timing belt.

Also I threw in a pair of Skunk2 adjustable cam gears and a Koyo 56mm dual core aliuminium radiator.

I also decided to cut the end out of the rocker cover to expose the cam gears, and paint the rocker cover. (pic's as follow)

The radiator when I first saw it.

Well, this is basically where i'm at right now. Obviously i've just skimmed over most of it, and left out most of the details. But if anyone is planning any of the mods i've done already. Feel free to ask, and i'll elaborate, maybe be of some help.

Future plans are mainly under the bonnet. I've made the first step by strengthening the timing belt and beefing up the cooling system. My next step (when I can afford it) is to send her into High Power Racing, where Ivan is going to give her a set of (approx) 650cc injectors. (haven't decided on a brand yet) a better fuel pump and a Hondata s300. Then it will be off to either Exotic Exhausts, or a guy some may know as Stainless Steve. (haven't decided which yet) to have the manifold fabricated, the dump pipe made and all the induction piping made and ceramic coated. Then i'll have snail power at last.

Obviously, I realise thats only the start of the serious work. But at least i've made my plan.

No prizes for guessing who hasn't been paying attention.

The car was actually given to me, so I didn't buy it.

And it's a VtiR. i.e. H22a stock.

hey man
quick question what material did u use to cover the speakers, in tweeter covers? also had you go modifying the rails for the seats(did you have to)

I just browsed through spotlite and similar places till I found a material similar to the origonal black stuff, but in the colour that I wanted. (ie. To match the outside colour) It actually took a while to find the right stuff. The rear speakers, i poped the metal mesh out and sprayed it with the same paint as the outside.
I used hot melt glue on the back of the covers. Basically, I wrapped the material around and stuck it on the back.

The seats came with rails, I just fabricated brackets to fix the rails to the floor. I'm not saying I wouldn't end up being defected for them, they haven't been blue plated yet anyhow. But I used to work in a workshop which did blue plates. So it's just a mater of waiting till I get the chance to drop in there and say HI! To the boys.... LOL

I would have done this during the timing belt service, but these bels were not available at the time. (I hadn't thought to order them) LOL

Today i am going to replace the oil seal behind the oil cooler, (to stop the oil leak onto the cat. LOL) and replace the oil filter with a Drift High Performance Magnetic oil filter. I only found out about this product yesterday. And went straight into Autobarn and grabbed one. Not only are they a very good product. But they are a pretty BLUE..... Ohhhhhhhhh........ The clutch is in fact in and i'm in the prosess of getting used to it. It IS everything I had hoped.

It's quite abrupt, but useable. Firm under foot.

Also I have installed a pair of Angeleyes, and am about to install a set of headers, just to help improve engin bay apearance untill the snail shows his face.

I'll post pics of all of this once my internet at home is uncaped on the 25th. (Bloody kids on Xbox live...!)

Well, as most of us know, building cars is generally about finding the next weakest link.

Well my car found it's next weakest link. Which after putting in a big clutch, was the clutch hydraulics.

My clutch master cylinder shit it's self.

So $133.00, and an hour and a half later, I now have new clutch master and slave cylinders.

I was instantly surprised by how smooth my clutch was. Or more to the point. It made me realise how bad it had been before. Either way, it's one step ferther towards being compleated. (if there is such a thing)

What brand headers did you get? Does the car sound sexier now? Your engine bay is neat as.

ThePacman
19-10-2010, 02:01 PM
The headers were a cheap generic brand, off ebay.
I figure there was no sence spending big dollars on headers which were going to be switched out as soon as the snail goes in anyhow.
Even considering that, yes the car sounds better. Much better. My daughter heard me drive up the street (hitting Vtec) and said to her brother,'what a cool sounding car!' she had to come out and see that it was me before she would believe her brother... LOL
there was also a marked increase in torque and top end power....
i only fitted them to improve the look of the engine bay untill I get the turbo fitted. (that heat sheild realy SUCKED)

act_gooner
19-10-2010, 02:29 PM
That's fair enough. How much they set you back? Thought your daughter would love the Honda? Girls usually like them.

ThePacman

The headers only cost me $95USD + shipping but the AUD wasn't as strong back then.

Basically I got both the headers AND the Angel eyes at my door for just under $400 AUD.

And yeah. She does love it. She's only 11. But showing good taste in cars already.

My 16 year old son loves it too. Especially when I let him drive to school. (he's got his learners now). He just loves pulling up in the lude in front of all his mates....

I work near/around there.
I drive a tow truck.
I park it there cause it's safer than parking it outside the truck yard at Darra.
Plus I know the staff, and at least it's under cover.

I quite often sit at the servo during the day.

So you have seen that these are very good photos.

Like the colour. What's it's code? Have been leaning towards this for my CRX Gen 2 when I paint it, with black accents on the lower 300mm. (blending the red over the black so as not to have an actual dividing line).

Very impressive build, specially like the interior treatment. Simple and effective, gives it a luxury look while retaining performance overtones. The H22A seems to sit in a more upright position than the SOHC F22A used in the lesser version of this model (and is a pig to do any work behind, try replacing the brake proportioning valve on one of them). Good to see you stayed with the wheels it came with, suits it well.

Couldn't agree more on the flimsy nature of commercially made f'glass skirts and bars, all made to maximise profit margins at the buyers expense, good to see you willing to share your expertise for the benefit of members.

P.S. I thought the flames looked good. Then I grew up on a diet of American Hotrod mags.

Clearly haven't updater here in a LOOOOONG time.
Most of the Prelude guys would have been following my progress over on PA. But for those who haven't, i'll have to update soon......
Basically, i've just been splashing some carbon around, harnesses are in. New seats are in and back out untill I finish my rails properly.
Fitted a Forbiden Motorsport cooling plate, which is about the closest thing I have made to a performance upgrade. LOL
I have a Tanabe underbrace to go on. And i'm swapping the 24mm Whiteline rear sway bar. For a 24mm selby front and a selby adjustable rear.
i removed the clear LED rear wing, and fitted a carbon job that looks awesome IMO.

Anyhow, when I get a chance, i'll do the big update thing so you can see what direction she's heading now. As I think the carbon is a slightly different look to what she had before.

Time, patience and effort and a blatant disregard for those who tell me i'm taking the car down the wrong road.... LOL

The idea of customising a ride is to make it uniquely yours.

I built a 389ci 4 bolt main cleveland in a XC falcon GXL 25 years ago, and loved it.

Are you going to tidy up the engine bay?

No mate. If (or when) something goes wrong, I want to be able to lift the hood and put my hand on the failed part. (Preferably after it's cooled a little)

It is how it stays pretty much, form and function. it's a driver. not a nip'n'tucked show car.... Just my daily driver.

Anyhow, A link to my thread in the forced induction section. in case there is something I missed in there, that I covered in here. Or visa versa....

All fabrication work was done by Richard, of Autosport engeneering. he is a certifyable genius when it comes to race fabrication, though certainly not the cheapest guy around....

I had little clearance on my top hose. as you can see in this pic showing the old clearances.

But I went down for a dig through the rad hose section at supercheap, and came up with a better hose. it's about an inch at the thermostat housing, but a good couple of inches everywhere else. I'm still considering making a little heat sheild though. I have to make one for the back of the power steering pump, altinator and AC compressor anyhow.

Pic showing new clearances. There's actually more clearance than it looks in this pic.

But they couldn't even tell me what kind of car it was from, so I could order a blue hose to match the Gates Racing bottom rad hose I already have ready to put on...

It's a Honda (and a car made after the 1970's), you have to remove at least 6 other items first.

Christ mate, i'm going to have to do that to jump start it.... LOL (Battery is between the chasis rail and the gear box etc)

But I am planning to fit remote jumper terminals...

hey champ...

i love the engine bay work...
for ur rad hose, try some heat wrap or that heat sleeve stuff u can get from autobahn....

^ this

That hose is way too close for comfort, dangerously close to the header piping. So much heat is generated there, esp with turbo.

props on the car BTW

yeah thanks guys....

Going to be venting the bonnet to get rid of some excess heat... ceramic coating everything. But I don't want to wrap the manifold though.
So yeah, if I wrap anything it'll be the rad hose its self. (Dump pipe will be wrapped, after ceramic coating...)

bonnet vent won't be effective, the hose is extremely close the the header, bonnet vent will make next to zero benefit for your problem.

I disagree, you should wrap the manifold, that will dissipate the heat - you should wrap that one, not the hose.

Its the exhaust header that causes the heat, which can result in the failure of cooling system, not the other way round.

isn't header wrap meant to insulate rather than dissipate?

ThePacman

Yeah mate. By stopping the heat from escaping through the wall of the extractor, your keeping the heat in the exhaust gas.
Which is the best way to get rid of the excess heat. While it's still in the exhaust gas....

id b careful in wrapping ur exhaust manifold......

best bet would be to HPC coat the manifold and heat sleave the rad pipe....
i have my aircon line in my itr about 1inch away from the manifold, my manifold wasnt HPC coated but i did heat sleeve the aircon line and never had any issues, my car was daily driven & tracked for over 18months and it was fine.....prob would still be fine today if no low life had pinched the car....

Yeah, i'm ceramic coating the manifold, but not heat wrapping it. The only exhaust pipe i'm wrapping as well is the dump...

I've looked at different methods for covering the rad hose. But haven't decided on anything yet.
Maybe heat wrap, with a stainless braid cover over that...??

Ok, just so that you know I'm still continuing my pursuit of rice.....

Most of my turbo setup has ben covered in the forced induction section.
But this wasn't really turbo related, so I put it back in here...

Wasn't sure about putting these on for so long.... But now that they are on, I'm very glad I did....

I like them.....
