Hi guys,

After I installed a new airbox on my Civic I started it up, let it warm up for about 10 minutes, then gave it a bit of a rev to hear the new induction sound... then when walking around the back of the car I found this - looks like some water condensation but no idea what the black stuff is? Is it like carbon or something and why?

The car only gets driven on weekends and sits during the week and only has 53,000ks on it...

Any ideas?

Soot or exhaust caron build up in the exhaust system.

When you park y our car over night water/moisture builds up in side and when you start the car and it heats up.

The moisture mixes with the carbon dust from condensation and forms a black soot leaking out .

In other words its normal.

If it becomes too extreme maybe the O2 sensor is becoming faulty and it is running rich, causing more than usual exhaust carbon build up

Tends to happen alot in winter/cold seasons.
As your exhaust is hot the moisture in the air starts to steam. By the time the exhaust cools, youll have little water droplets inside the exhaust. Morning dew also makes it worse.
Ever drive behind a car and water pours out of the exhaust? Well my friend, thats how nature works.

Either that or you have a blown head gasket and its burning coolant. Not very common on hondas though.

Normal. Carbon/moisture and shit. Blow it out with a drive.

No offense mate but search next time, this has been covered twice in the last few months.

Ah sure, sorry about that will search first next time. But yep, sounds like it must be more of a winter thing with the colder air :)

Thanks guys,
