Hey guys,
Today I got my sound system installed (1 12" sub, 600W amp, 2 6 inch splits with tweeters and a double din DVD player) and for some reason there seems to be a small whisteling noise coming from the engine. It can get quite loud the more you rev the car. It (kind of) sounds like the whistle a turbo charged car has. Anyone know what it could be? I'm hoping there is nothing wrong
Thanks.

its called ground loop induction

http://www.epanorama.net/documents/groundloop/index.html

double check your grounds are sweet and dont run power cables and signal cables next to each other.

the dodgy bandaid is to get a ground loop isolator from JBhifi.

What kind of headunit is it?

Good brand or cheap ebay one?

New or 2nd hand?

Thanks for the link, the installer told me that because of the way these DVD players are set up he had to do all this special wiring crap.
The headunit is a JVC DVD player, brand new from a well renowned retailer in Canberra.
Is this noise necessarily bad? Because I'll be needing the car a fair bit before the guy will probably be able to look at it.

Also if it helps I'm pretty sure the noise is coming from the actual engine, not the speakers. It doesn't happen when I start the car and when its idling, only when I accelerate and a big when it engine breaks.

its also known as alternator whine.
so the faster the alternator spins the louder the whine gets.
its caused by bad grounding or interference getting into the signal cables for the amp or into the head unit.
it can be very hard to completely get rid of.
the sound wont be coming from the engine but from the speakers.
is the whine there when you have the volume down low or at any level?
if its only down low you can just turn it up and you wont even notice it

Well you only notice it when its down low. Its gone a bit retarded today, sometimes it doesn't happen at all, but overall it hasn't been as loud as it was yesterday. Which is a good thing I guess!

run nil gauge wires for

Battery ground -> chassis
Engine Ground -> chassis
Alternator + -> battery +

this should help

also check your power wires aren't running next to sound wires, if not, ground loop isolator is your answer

i agree with mikey72 ^^, usually rca and power wires are usually the case for the winding sound
