i always thought that rims were only legal 1" above stock.....
so like, if ur car came with factory 17's, then the legal rims u can have must be no bigger than 18".....maybe im wrong?

Regarding the legality; Apparently there is no actual ruling on 'plus 1', 'plus 2' etc. The RTA just says that the overal diameter cannot change or something like that. And your track (width from center of one wheel to centre of other wheel) cannot change. (One of my mates checked with an engineer)

But what the RTA says is legal, and what your insurer will accept are 2 completely separate things. NRMA has some of the strictest rules, other insurers just say "whatever is legal" (see above).

Dominik

Nope, but you can call and find out (24hrs a day if i'm not mistaken). I did for lots of things, i asked about what i can and cant do etc...

I'm with GIO - i *thought* i was with AAMI, but i was wrong! Oops!

They told me that any legal mods are ok, but some mods (such as lowering) incur a 'punitive liability' meaning that in the case of an accident i pay $550 excess instead of $450...

AAMI told me that Iam able to do unlimited mods (suspension, exhaust etc..even wider wheels) they mentioned that they have just had some recent changes to their policy to allow this, and yep they did mention a punitive liability and all drivers must be over 25 yo. Im waiting for this in writing when they send me out a quotation.

do you know the load rate?
you said you got 18's im guessing you lowered it
did they cause a fuss about springs?

albii

not lowered yet . the load rate needs to be no less than 91......i have 225 40 18s on it with a load rate of 92.

18's......would u still need to lower ur car? i mean if it has 18's on it doesnt it look sorta lowered already since theyre so wide and big?? (sorry about the newbie ish question but i have yet to get my euro but i know for a fact that 16" on euros has a ridiculous clearance height)

the diameter of 18's are bigger then 16 I think

albii
05-01-2005, 11:19 PM
diameter cannot change legally more than 14 mm

Reagan
05-01-2005, 11:23 PM
how do you tell the load rate albii

Dominik
05-01-2005, 11:26 PM
Not if you take it to a tyre shop and fit some tyres to the 18"s!

Thats the whole point of low profile tyres - so that larger mags can have exactly the same rolling diameter as OEM mags. My 17"s actually have a smaller diameter than my stock wheels.

I dunno, but it seems that insurers are nicer to me since i turned 25 :)

Mine field here. Comes down to declaring info in your insurance mods or that's where you can come unstuck in the event of claims. The big issue in a real bad one is with ADR's as vehicle is certified with standard wheels and is to the law illegal if modified from that standard.

thats why insurance company and RTA have different rules.
