97 Civic radio aerial

Hey guys, the antenna/aerial for the radio on my partner's 97 Civic sedan needs repair - grateful for some advice.

It is supposed to go up when the stereo's turned on and down when it's turned off, but lately it's decided to just stay in the up position the whole time.

I assume it's a motor or something, is it something I can fix myself (amateur) or will it need to be done by a mechanic?

its pretty easy but you have to find a new antenna motor which i believe is quite exxy for wat it is..

there are DIY for it in the diy section. gota remove the inner plastic in the boot.

Have you checked to see it’s not something obvious like a fuse blown? If you remove the plastic boot trim from that side, you’ll see the motor and antenna. While I’m sure that a Honda replacement may cost a bit, there are universal aftermarket power antennas, that connect up to the same wires, that are available from car accessory places, or car audio places.

Have a look with a test lamp or similar at the wires to the motor in the boot – it should have power positive and negative (ground – probably a black wire) connections, and another one from the radio to switch it on. The wire from the radio will most likely have nothing when the radio is switched off, and a positive voltage to tell the antenna to go up when the radio is switched on. If the positive is missing – either the switch on voltage, or the positive supply voltage, suspect a fuse, faulty or disconnected plug/socket or a faulty relay, if there is one. The other thing it could be is a jammed antenna, due to a slightly bent mast. Download the Honda Civic workshop manual from the internet, and you’ll see if anything else is involved – there may also be a relay somewhere. I installed a fully automatic power antenna in an Alfa I used to own some time ago, that had an antenna at the rear – I bought one at a local car radio specialist shop/workshop, and put it in myself when I upgraded the sound system.
