Zc is twin cam and the d series vtec is single cam.....The zc is a better in my opinion

ZC because it's twin cam. Have driven both, stock and modified. ZC/A8 was better.

Currently driving a D16Y1 SOHC VTEC as my daily driver and it kinda sucks. I've done a couple of little mods but it's like trying to get blood out of a stone.

Go ZC or you'll regret it :(

By the time you've wasted all your money on a D16ZC, you'll have realised that you should have just bought a B-series.
There isn't a great availability of aftermarket parts (let alone OEM) for the D16ZC,
so if you somehow manage to screw your gearbox you might be screwed as well.

You're better off getting a D16Y1/D16Y8 and spending cash on intake/exhaust and other not so major modifications.

There's this myth that single-cams aren't as quick as twin-cams, I don't think it's true.
If you have a decent background in engineering or sheer luck is on your side (good for you) you'll be able to crank out a fair amount of power from the SOHC D16's.
It's all about the right combination of parts and knowing what to do with them.

If you want quick and easy power you can just go the forced induction route later on.

tl;dr - D16ZC out-dated, pricey (sometimes), not many parts lying around ...
SOHC D16 a lot of interchangeable parts (gearbox from any SOHC D-series), cheap VTEC'z, better aftermarket support.

If the OP is considering using one to modify (which he hasn't stated) I would assume he's on a budget anyway since he's not mentioned B-series yet.

Therefore with I/H/E I would still highly recommend the ZC/D16A8 over a SOHC VTEC D as those engines/mods are plentiful and dirt cheap.

The Dohc D16 has a little more power from factory then the Sohc Vtec D16... however the Dohc D16 has shit aftermarket support will cost you alot more to modify then a SOHC...

But if he's just going simple/cheap mods it's easy. A set of headers is not hard to find, intake and exhaust components are built to the chassis.

Apart from the cam , and inlet manifold......everything else is interchangeable right ? So how will it cost much more ?

i would say their the same engine at the end of the day
But i choose one i would go with ZC/d16a8
The ZC was basis of the B and k series being here today

Here a pic of bottom end of zc (look at the Hardware is comes with from stock, you don't get similar stuff from V8's without spending $5k plus)

ZC/D16a9inlet and exhaust manifold are bigger than the SOHC engine but you can get them to fit

inlet manifold you use a adopter plate made by ZCspeed in usa, now you can use Sohc manifolds from the like of Shunk2, Bisimoto Itb and other which are out there

Exhaust you can port the exhaust to have the same port size manifold, use your ZC/d16a8 exhaust gasket and match the size of the ports
From memory it only 2-3mm you got to grin away from the exhaust manifold ports

What about tyres? And what tyre sizes? Any weight differences? Compression in both engines? Driver experience?

we both had street tyres, both 16's
his would have been heavier (chrome)
good traction on the day
no weight reduction in cars apart from subs being removed
gear ratios were almost identical...just that my car seems to pull alot harder than his from 2nd to 3rd

mine 15.8 flat, zc did low 16
his engine has been around the block though, mine has lower k's
