Hi all, Ive been on ozhonda for an on looker for about 6 months. Great forum with great people and information. I'm Jono, 18 years old out of Perth. I was born in Singapore, lived there 15 years and then moved to Perth 3 years ago. Making me English haha (Both parents are English so...)When I was 11, I sat in a Red Honda civic eg4 I think. And I remember looking at Dad saying when I can drive my first car will be a honda. Well 6 years later I got my license and then next week I got my civic. Sound like a bit out of a blockbuster but its true haha. Ever since then I have been planning on what I wont to do to it.

Ive had the car for about a year and half and still nothing has been done. Couple reasons, first I was in school and had no income. Second had no space or experience with cars. How ever this has all changed now and im currently working full time and a Apprentice Automotive Technician for Volkswagon in the city.

Anyway time for the fun stuff. Like I said ive got a 1992 Honda Civic EG4 with the twin Carb in it. Its completely stock standard apart from the rims and stereo. Here are some photos of it:
http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/59/l_6b512f588994481fb2da6c9d7686e476.jpg
http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/56/l_3125f5fa0b2645869c411de7607f958b.jpg

Stock as! Now the plan..... I plan to make it a powerful street legal race car haha. Im currently working on the handling mods. Few weeks ago I got some EG5 rear hubs and brakes so I can convert my drum brakes into disks. I have a Skunk2 Racing Tie Brace and waiting on my Skunk2 Rear LCA's. On Thursday im gonna buy a 14mm rear sway bar. After I have fitted all this and got enough money im planning on buying my strut bars. Front 3 Point ultra racing strut brace. and 2 point rear one. After all this is done I will then start saving for some coilovers and the engine.

Heres mine short parts list. Its growing as we speak haha
- B18c
- Rear Swaybar
- Skunk2 Lower Control arms
- Skunk2 Rear Lower Tie Brace
- Ultra Racing 3 Point Front Upper Strut Brace
- Ultra Racing 2 Point Rear Upper Strut Brace
- Mugen Style Front Lip
- Black Housed Headlights
- Amber Corner Lights
- JDM Style Yellow Foglights
- VTI (EG5) Rear Hubs and Brakes
- totally new interior. Race Seats, carpet, etc
- Need a new bonnet after mine got revered into! Going to wrap it in carbon fiber look.

Well thats it for now. Im currently stripping back the hubs and re painting them. Ill upload some progress photos soon.

Thanks

Anyway time for the fun stuff. Like I said ive got a 1992 Honda Civic EG4 with the twin Carb vtec in it.

A twin carb vtec?
Wouldn't it be great if there was such a thing.... :)

hrm inspired by my build much? lol

u need to change the UR strut braces to this ...

2 point front strut
4 point rear strut

also i can link you a good twin core alloy radiator for $200 shipped when you are on MSN next =D

you might want to add some lighter weight wheels to that list as well ... either some good jap wheels from a trader here on ozhonda or some Dc2 integra alloys - which arnt too bad for the EG civic and bolt straight on =)

also if you can get a JDMyard/skunk2/type-r style shift knob - doesnt sound important but it made my car heeps nicer to drive lol

But Skunk2/Blox etc are all great knobs :)

Well bit of an update. Ive finished my back end mods, installed the EG6 Hubs, Skunk2 LCA, Skunk2 Tie Brace and sway bar. Will get photos up asap having problems atm. This saturday ill be picking up my new fuel tank and fuel lines so I can run a EFI system. Been to Honbits, I was told that a EK system will almost fit perfectly, so thats what ive got. Also this weekend ill start removing the engine.

Ive stripped the interior as im going to lay down a new carpet and give it a good clean up. Got a photo of that lol

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs680.snc4/61997_161414250541870_100000198870342_570824_47634 52_n.jpg

Ill upload some more photos this weekend.

Good on you Jono, lookin good. As you have discovered converting to EFI is the only way to go. I'll be following your build with great interest as I want to do likewise to a carby Honda City GA2 (91)

Specially interested in what's involved wiring and computer wise. They have a D13C engine in them which is similar to the D15 in the cvic.

looking good man!!!

get a space saver spare wheel next time your at honbits - weight reduction ftw

markismaximus
22-09-2010, 11:11 AM
In regards to using an EK fuel system that almost fits perfectly why not use an EG fuel system that will fit perfectly?

I've never compared an EG vs EK tank side-by-side but even the smallest difference is going to cause major issues when trying to install it.

you can also make use of the carby fuel lines, will save you countless hours removing and installing fuel lines. Just have to replace all the soft fuel hose with EFI hose.

erm there's not much difference in WEIGHT yo.. is just the SIZE.. that's why they're called a 'SPACE-saver' spare wheel :P

just ditch the spare alltogether :)

Jono Civic

markismaximus - to be honest im not 100% sure. They told me but I forgot :) But ive been told the EK is the best way to go. Anyone else go any more input? "In regards to using an EK fuel system that almost fits perfectly why not use an EG fuel system that will fit perfectly?"

hondapop - the wiring im still looking in to and not looking forward to it lol. When I get my half cut ill be able to see what.Gav from Honbits said they may be able to help me out with it all.

As for the spare tyre.... **** it gonna take it out... If I go on a long cruise or something ill just put it in the back seat or what not haha. Also im going to be taking the sound deadening shit out. Just need to source some dry ice and ill do it.

TheSaint
22-09-2010, 07:58 PM
i would take mine out but i travel from busso to bunno almost every day ... dont wanna be stuck on that road lol

swapped out my spare for a space saver - from lifting both i would say theres about half to one kilo difference

another thing i like about the space saver in my sedan is that i dont have to have a hump if i want to put a floor back in lol

Jono Civic

I was told that a EK system will almost fit perfectly, so thats what ive got. Also this weekend ill start removing the engine.

It will fit fine with no drama's, friend of mine who's a mech has done it on both of his eg's (Hatch and sedan).

Why is the EK system preferred over the EG? Any reason,or just because one was available?

24-09-2010, 10:52 PM
That's awesome. Is exactly what I want to aim at doing. But I still got no space, or know how. lol.
And i'd have to buy a 2nd care while this is being done.

Keep the updates coming. Will be sick to see it finished.

Jono Civic
24-09-2010, 11:29 PM
Cheers guys.... Yeah its gonna be one hell of a job but thats why is a project car. I havn't done one before but from mates the best thing is dont put a time frame on it. Just work through the list which is what im doing.

Splintercracks - Space was a issue with me... Still living at home so I cant just take over everything haha. But we moved house and got a bigger garage so I stuck a deal with dad and now I gotta rent space for it lol. And yeah I got a 2nd car, ute comes in handy with everything. Getting parts, transporting the car and its good fun off road haha. I have just uninsured my civic but KEEP paying the rego.

Will get some more photos this weekend. Having problems uploading to my computer.

You will need to check with your state's motor registration authority as to what they will allow in the way of mods, especially as you're intending to change the engine/fuel system/exhaust etc. Some states have restrictions on capacity increases/ whether the replacement engine was one that the factory fitted to other models in the same range. You may need an engineers report and certification. Keeping it registered as it was before modification you will find is most likely illegal and could result in instant defect and removal off the road. I.E. being towed away. Don't want to put the frighteners on you, but you need to know this.

Jono Civic
25-09-2010, 11:49 AM
yeah cheers for that hondapop... Contacting a engineer this week. From what I hear from other people who have dont a similar thing in perth is that its normally ok. Honda engine in a honda car cops shouldn't know much about the engine I donno tho. Drive sensible and you wont get done is my theory.

hondapop
25-09-2010, 12:17 PM
Good to here you're doing that. Every state has it's own rules. Some are easier (more sensible) than others. Qld where I am's not too bad. Vic from what I hear is a bastard. Here now, your engine number appears on the window sticker and there are moves afoot to put all your info on the number plate and the cops are going to be able to access it electronically without even disturbing themselves from their seat. Don't know if you've got a Civic specific club in Perth but there are a number of peeps in the crxaustralia.com club would be friendly. Also a good source of info and help.

did u get a whole fuel tank or just the pump and lines?
if u just got the pump, then u can bolt it externally by running feed lines to it.
if u bought the whole thing. Bolt on and off and wiring.

Jono Civic
26-09-2010, 01:08 PM
Yeah I got the pump and tank... The problem is that I currently have the gavtiy style pump so theres no wiring. So gotta work out to to add the wiring in. No rush the engine mods are last to do any how. I just got the tank and lines so I got them for when I start the engine.

if your pump looks like this or similar

http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd121/mx83cressida/ED%20Civic/EDSwapWeek6-054.jpg

you need the original plug and wiring from the EK the tank came from. You're going to need an EFI harness

Well today was a pretty good day... I have now finished almost all the back end mods. Just waiting on money so I can order strut brace and coilovers... I have decided to do all my handeling mods first then focus on the engine. My plan was to do it in stages but im going to wait until I have everything I need. Plan was to rip the engine out this weekend clean it up and in a couple of months when I had the money to get the half cut. But now ill just wait finish off the carpet in the interior and get her back on the road. I have got some photos of the rear, note the sway bar was painted but for some reason hasn't really showed up well. The paint didn't stick to the metal to well, so ill probs respray it later on.

Backend mods are done... 14mm Sway bar... Skunk2 Lower Control arms... EG6 Discs Brakes... Skunk2 Tie Brace..

Brained Hose lines for brakes. I will also use them for Fuel lines and clutch.

Next on the shopping list is some strut braces from Ultra Racing. Thanks to Saint for hooking me up, cheers mate. I will be getting the, Front 2 Point upper brace, Front Lower brace, Rear 4 point brace and the rear floor brace. Once I have got and installed all of them, ill start saving for some coilovers. Been looking at the skunk2 Pro C, but apart from that nothing else. Im open to some suggestions, so please feel free to discuss some.

Should have some more photos up tomorrow, been working on my custom center dash today/night. Will update tomorrow when hopefully it will be finish.

Cheers and happy wrenching!

Thanks guys so far 3 week in and its been good fun... more late nights and a few cartons to go though!

Saint Yeah I sanded them right back, primed and sprayed 2 coats. Must be the paint has gone off or something stupid. Have another go at it tomorrow. Yeah the discs really make the car look good I think and will help heaps. Havn't been cheap tho, 400 for the hubs. As I was stripping them and cleaning found the brackets are seized and need two new ones (still need to source some). Then I bleed the brakes to find one caliper has also seized, gonna try a trick tomorrow to free it up. Then had to get new brake line. But will be worth it.

TheSaint

yeah the braking power of my civic is crap - im gona try better front rotors and pads before saving up for rear discs

when i did my swap from the d15b7 to b16a i got told by the licencing centres that if u exceed 300cc gain from the original engine displacement you gotta get engineering certificates.someone here could hopefully confirm that...?
nice build man=D good luck with it all.

quangsuke
27-09-2010, 07:06 AM
It isn't really 300cc it's a percentage of your stock engine. Think it is 20% or something along those lines

hondapop
27-09-2010, 07:44 AM
Yeah, as I said, each state has it's own regulations. From what I've read others saying, Victoria seems to be the most restrictive.

Yeah I know it wont have the harness for the pump... but Should come with the engine loom which is what I thought you ment by the efi harness.

the engine loom is only a small part of what you need for the EFI conversion. Still need the loom that goes to the ECU, underdash fuse panel and then of course to the fuel pump.

unless you are an auto sparky or know someone who is that will work for free, trying to convert a carby harness to EFI will be a massive, massive task

Jono Civic
27-09-2010, 05:04 PM
oh yeah I know its a massive job... I got one or two mates that will be able to help me out. Thanks

Bit of an update... Havn't done much lately, been busy going other shit. But got time to work on it a bit this weekend. Mainly interior stuff and getting her back on the road. As my sister needs my ute as her is getting hailed repaired... So I got her back on the road today. Put new rotors and pads on. Nothing super special just average joes. Did a bit of work on the interior, started dying my old shity carpet and so far looks wikied. Also my door trims, now they look the goods cant wait to put them all together. And started work on my custom dash, the CD play will sit just below where the normally sit. Yes I know you can buy a JDM one but why spend 300+ bucks on it when you can build a custom one... Anyway heres a few photos

Still wet... Takes a while to dry!

Next pay day ill be getting all my strut braces. Ultra Racing, rear 4 point, floor bar, front upper 2 point and front lower 2 point. With all the back end mods ive done the car was good but room for improvement. Then when a sale goes through ill but some skunk2 Pro C coilovers.
