Hey OzHonda, well tomorrow I might be looking at some EG Civic's and just had a few questions.

Firstly, is there anything wrong with getting a carburetor instead of EFI, I am leaning towards EFI but just in the case that I don't find one.

Secondly, I am only wanting to spend about max 4 grand on the car, is that alright? What mileage should I be looking at? I don't want something too high which I can only drive for a week before it breaks.

Cheers Smiley.

4k is plenty for a first car but if you only have 4k in the first place thats a problem because you always have to spend money on a used car

hey man EG's are plentiful ull be sure to find one in that price range
however most in that range are either high k's, carby or have body problems
i helped my cuz by an EG 5 months ago, it's a twin carb with about 160k and we got it down to $2,500...havent had any problems with it thus far, body is clean aswell
theres nothing wrong with carby's, only difference between the two would be power, efi got more

I am looking for a EFI that isn't a Breeze, it is so annoying.

Carsales has a Breeze for I think like 3 with only 142 000, was like, why couldn't this guy have bought a GLi or something.

I think the breeze is single carby, they are shitboxes.

whereabouts are you

Should also add, I am in Victoria, where the cars are crapper compared to every other state.

If you only have 4k it doesn't necessarily mean 4k on the car BAM! done deal.

You need to take into consideration of transfer fees and rego etc.

+ Rwc if its not provided etc.

And also maintenance on the car. For a 4k car don't expect the car to be immac. So you gota spend a bit more to get it reliable etc.

*Wish you the best in finding a cheap and hassle free car that will make you smile :)

You can buy EG's for dirt cheap these days dude.

Bulbasaur, you are wrong in many ways, Sydney especially is known to have the cheapest cars in the whole COUNTRY!

I've seen EG's go for $600 WITH REGO! Sure they were in bad shape, but with a limit of $4,000, you can find a EG Si with the D16A8 DOHC motor in good condition, or even a VTi in good condition.. EG's aren't worth jack shit anymore, just keep looking.

Look on ebay, carsales, trading post, ozhonda, jdmst, other forums etc.. One is bound to pop up for dirt cheap.. Try gumtree aswell!

@mnc, I know that it won't be just BAM, I am usually looking for a car with a long rego, and am getting a mechanic to check each car I want, to see what is needed for roady and if there is damage. Thanks.

@Bulbasaur, I don't reckon, I always see the good/cheap cars in NSW or QLD. Thanks.

@tiksie, I know you can find them dirt cheap, I just don't know what mileage is good and what is bad, and I have been on so many sites/forums looking at cars. Thanks.

Also, a lot of the ones I have seen has paint fade.

That tends to happen when a car is 15+ years old and been under many different seasons.

Especially due to the face that most cars pre-95 came out with acrylic bassed paints which fade much easier.

Personally, I'm not too fussy with cars having close to 200,000K as long as you do a compression test and the car seems fine..

Rule of thumb, you can always replace a motor, but you can't repace a chassis.... Body is way more important then motor.

Yeah, with the fade issue, I am trying to get a white car so there is no fade. Except EVERY EG is red...

Someone said that 200 000 km's on a EG is A LOT. I actually have no idea.

my EG8 has done over 300 000 kms and it still runs like the day we got it at 150 000 kms

the EFI motors are amazing as long as they are looked after =D

my car is white and has NO fade ... but the clear coat has peeled a little on the boot and there are some small rust spots beginning to appear here and there - shes due for a trip to the panel beater to get ontop of things tho =)

You usually dont spray white with Basecoat with Clearcoat. You spray it with Solid color which doesnt need a clear =D Therefore its just your paint fading

EG Breeze - 1.3L carby
EG GL - 1.5L Carby
EG GLi - 1.5L EFI
EG VTI - 1.6L SOHC Vtec
EG SI - 1.6L DOHC non vtec.

Don't get carby. You should be able to get VTi or SI at around 4-5k in Victoria. The rest I've seen them down to 2.5k if not less.

Nice info there chauster, I definitely don't want want a carby, hence why I don't want that one jusybabe. That guy is advertising it as a SI on carsales with a 1.6.

Seen that red one EK1, the guy told me he sold it after two days of putting it up, don't know why it hasn't been taken down.

That guy is selling with 10 months reg and RWC. For some reason it sounds like a bit much to me.

Go EFI. I haven't had a carby car for years.

IMO it's a dated dinosaur technology. The last carby car sold in the USA was in 1990. In oz carbys were still in new cars until well into the 90s.

Crappy cold starts, flooded engine are synonymous with carburettors. Only advantage is that a clean up and rebuild is much cheaper than if you foul up ur fuel injectors.

I'm sure you can find an EFI car for ur price range. Bargain hard and get a pre-purchase inspection done by a reputable mechanic since the car will be in the later stages of it's life. Don't trust a roadworthy, it's way too easy to get a dodge one. I havent been personally burned, but I've seen heaps of dodgy shit in my time.

That way you know ur not buying a lemon that will cost u another 4K to get back up to scratch.
