Disclaimer: The following are provided as a GUIDE ONLY, and neither myself. nor the original writer, nor Ozhonda take any responsibility for the outcomes of someone else doing the following. You follow these steps at your own risk!

NOTE: The only reason i have chose to do it this way was because it will be neater, more have wire to play with, more room to tape and solder up without burning shit.
This is also a general idea for other cars too not just an ek, same principle and concept.

Aim : to install a headunit in a vehicle

Tools, phillips screw driver, flat blade screw driver, side cutter, electrical tape, wire strippers, multi metre, test light. some sort of light if you can't see. You can also use bullet terminals with , if your not keen on soldering,

1. Remove the gearknob by twisting it left, until it comes undone,

2 . Remove centre console, including the hand brake, there will be 3 screws holding the centre console and handbrake cover on each side as shown in picture.

3. Remove coin pocket, din, tray or whatever by undoing the 4 screws, two on each side pictured below
http://img816.imageshack.us/img816/7531/05092010058.jpg (http://img816.imageshack.us/i/05092010058.jpg/)

4. You should have something looking like this.
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/948/05092010055.jpg (http://img228.imageshack.us/i/05092010055.jpg/)

5. Once you have that apart, remove your old headunit, unplug the wiring loom and feed it back down where you have removed the consoles. also remove the metal bracket holding the old cd player and replace it with your new one, if you find it hard to remove the brackets there should be tab's sitting around the bracket holding it against the dash use you flat blade and push them up.
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/9440/05092010036.jpg (http://img715.imageshack.us/i/05092010036.jpg/)

6. Now you have the loom infront of you, use your test light to find power ( + ), ( to find + hook your test light to chasis, or something with good earth and probe away one test light fires up you have found power, and to find - hook + and probe for - )

7. Once you have found + on the loom also look for the accessory ( memory wire )and bridge it, use your wire strippers to strip the wires and join it onto the cd player loom, it will be yellow ( might be different to headunit manufacturers )

8. Also repeat step 7 but in reverse to find a good earth. ( generally earth will be black again might be different to headunit manufacturers. )

9. Turn on vehicle to see if headunit turns on.
http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/7935/05092010050.jpg (http://img8.imageshack.us/i/05092010050.jpg/)

10. Once headunit turns on, you now have to hook your speakers up, if you remove the speaker cover on the door trims, and remove the speaker. You can see 2 coloured wires ( red/ black and white/grey ) whatever it might be. and find the same colours on the loom, connect them up according to colours and test it if it works.

11. Repeat steps for both driver and passenger side, you can also use a multimetre and do a contuniuty test until you hear the beep meaning you've matched the wires up correctly.

12. To undo the rear speakers, remove parcel tray, undo 3 screw holding the speaker covers and also colour code the wire back to your headunit. Repeat for LHS AND RHS

13. Turn on vehicle to test if cd player is working, place a cd and check that all speakers are working, on the headunit loom, generally purple and green wires are for rear speakers, and white and grey are for the front speakers, make sure you also play around with the balance and fade, to check whether it's working accordingly if not, switch the speaker wires around.

14. The head unit loom and vehicle loom, is now dummied up, if you are happy, twist all wires together tight.
http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/6827/05092010040.jpg (http://img832.imageshack.us/i/05092010040.jpg/)

15. Get the solder out and solder the wires together, and tape wires together making sure there's no little wires sticking out that might cause the headunit to short out.
http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/3703/05092010049.jpg (http://img375.imageshack.us/i/05092010049.jpg/)

16. Feed headunit loom back through where you found it, making sure the aerial wire is with it.
http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/5654/05092010054.jpg (http://img819.imageshack.us/i/05092010054.jpg/)

17. Place the new metal bracket for the headunit in. make sure it sits flush with the dash. bend the tabs around the bracket down by using a flat head screw driver, ( if you don't headunit might go flying towards you everytime you VTEC it yo ).
http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/3428/05092010052.jpg (http://img688.imageshack.us/i/05092010052.jpg/)

18. Plug headunit loom into head unit. plug aerial in aerial slot. BEFORE PUSHING HEADUNIT BACK IN, TURN ON VEHICLE TO CHECK EVERYTHING STILL WORKS AGAIN.
http://img814.imageshack.us/img814/2654/05092010056.jpg (http://img814.imageshack.us/i/05092010056.jpg/)

20. Once your happy with your work, push headunit in making sure it clicks to the bracket so headunit doesn't move and secured , making sure you don't crush in wires which may cause it to short out.

Most handy thing might be a chart / table identifying the stock wire colours and their application.

Mate, I'm missing couple of interesting things, please update if you can:
- How to remove the factory HU? Does it sit in it's place only clipped in, or are there any screws to undo?
- My car's got a (factory?) CD in the bottom part of the console. Any tips on removing it?
- Factory unit has a red light on it, flashing when immobiliser is active. Car also has alarm system installed, with alarm LED on the right hand side of the dash. I'm not sure if alarm is factory or aftermarket (got the car last week for my son), I think it's aftermarket 'cause the remote unit is sort of wooden colour... Question is if the factory HU is connected to the car alarm/remote system, and if so, how to deal with it? I found some info here: http://www.carstereo.com/help/civic_radio.cfm but not sure if it refers to the australian model. Planing to start a sound system upgrade next week (with build up thread), so trying to gather as many info's as I can before I start - should make my life a bit easier...
Thanks mate

Your factory one is held in by screws at the BACK of the headunit, hence you need to remove all that trim to get to it.

The red light on your factory EK HU is its own protection device, it does not impact on your car alarms / immobilizer in Australian models. (I have rang and confirmed this with Honda before). So if power is disconned to that stock HU (i.e. that red light isnot flashing anymore) next time you turn it on it wlll ask you for a activation password to let you use it.

Your CD player just look around where its screwed in and unplug and remove it.

An easier way of wiring instead of fiddling around with all the wires there is go buy a wiring harness / adaptor off ebay (supercheap / autobarn have them too) so your new headunit is direct plug and play into existing cars wiring harness. i can take a pic of my one if anyone is confused what im on about
For example in this case of a kenwood HU, you get http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Honda-ISO-WIRING-HARNESS-stereo-plug-Accord-Civic-more-/260669848855?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cb1223d17 and http://cgi.ebay.com.au/KENWOOD-ISO-WIRING-HARNESS-plug-lead-connector-wire-/260669248130?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cb1191282 and everything plugs together

The is the best site for car stereo wiring period!

http://www.the12volt.com/

Identifies the stock wire colours and tells you what they are for.

I refer to it every time I do an install. Just look up the car and away you go.

I can't express enough how amazing the site is!

Oh one more thing when your done figuring out what each wire is for, for convenience purposes, it might be a good idea to unplug the whole stereo wiring loom from the car, just trace the wires down to a blue plug at the other end unplug that, pull it out and do your soildering outside the car so that it well ventilated and that you don't do your back in. This is unique to the Ek, haven't been able to locate the same plug on an eg's stereo wiring, them wires just go up and disappear into he dash!

Thanks mate, that is an awesome tip - never heard of something like that before. Maybe it's a good idea to solder an ISO plug onto it, that way it'd be easy to change HU quick and easy, if need arises?
