Hi
S2000 started making a high pitched sound that gets louder as you go up the revs. Starts at 3,000rpm and gets higher in pitch (sorta like a supercharger noise). It does it in gear or just revving stationary (in neutral). Happens with sound system on and off (so its not the grounding wire and headunit fuse). Help?
Thanks

Are you sure its coming from the engine ?
Have the engine on, bonnet off and have some rev the car (or just pull on the throttle cable) and see if you can hear it from the engine bay.
I reckon its just your sound system the interference from the revs rising, not grounded properly

But he mentioned the sound system was off? Have you had a look at the intake at all?

might be an alternator bearing

I was thinking the same thing, it could be the intake. Do you have an after market intake or stock?

i changed the air filter to a K&N replacement filter. just slipped the old one off and new one on. its weird as sometimes it makes the noise and sometimes it doesnt.

Is it like a whistle sound? like when your slightly on the throttle? If so that's normal

I just recently installed a k&n filter and I get a high pitched whistling sound as well that starts at around 3000 rpm and cuts off at under 5000 I think. It's quite normal for k&n filters. I didn't actually notice it untill I read a thread on s2ki where a couple of guys were talking about it. Now I can hear it every time when I'm consciously listening for it

have you got your air filter cover on or off?
i noticed the whilstle when i removed the air filter cover! it ranges around 2500-3000rpm

nah i keep the cover on. sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesn't. it does it more in cold weather but i always let the car hit 3 bars before i go past 3,000pm as i don't want to damage the engine so i baby it lol

bro check that its not ur gearbox i remember after bout the 5th rebuild because of faults in the box the gearbox was making supercharger type sounds in 1st 2nd n 3rd.
check to c if it does it in all gears or only a few if it does it in all its not ur box its somthing else uv done recently to ur car how ever if its only happening in the lower gears get it checked

If you hear it sometimes and not other times then I doubt its the intake because you hear that whistle every time with it, not just sometimes. Also I wouldnt imagine you would hear it with the box closed either.

nah not gear box. it does it when in gear or when in neutral, stationary/ clutched down and up.

was i supposed to put anything between the intake pipe and the new filter? coz i just slipped it on. Did i need to use some sort of sealant or something? maybe that's why its making noises...

Is the sound your talking about resemble that of a cricket? More like a chirp? Or are you talking about a whistle like a referee whistle?
If it's the cricket sound, it may be your PCV valve needs a clean (I did it, and it helped for a bit, I replaced it to a brand new one and it came back ~_~) so that didn't end it for me. However, I did read up on it somewhere that it could be the throttle body that creates some sort of resonance during a certain point that creates that sound. I'm going to clean my TB over the weekend and see how it goes, but alot of s2ki members think it's an intake thing.. I noticed this sound after I installed my intake too though mind you, but I don't think it's normal as mine is dragging longer over time...

Try taking off your K&N filter and see if the noise is still there. that way you can narrow it down alot easier. I dont think K&N filters seal all that well with the stock intake piping either. When I first got my K&N intake kit I didnt have any free time to install the whole thing for a couple of weeks and I was impatient to at least get some of it on so I took out my stock filter and put the K&N one in the stock air box thinking it would be all gravy. I got it in as tight as possible and everything seemed fine. but the engine didnt seem as if it was getting enough air. I took it for a drive around the block and it seemd fine and then the next morning I backed out of my drive way and the car started spluttering and stalled and then it took me a couple of trys to get the engine to turn over and when it finally did the revs were really low. So I put the stock filter back in the box because thats the only logical thing I could think of that could be wrong and hey presto my car drove like a dream again! Once I fitted the K&N filter up with the K&N piping it worked fine as well.
hope that helps

hmmm i think i fit the filter properly. i noticed a small power increase when i changed it over as the other one was dirty as shit. im actualy getting epic fuel economy off my car which is amazing considering the power. last tank i got 8.5L/100km. but yeah noise comes and goes.

It would still be worth a try taking it off and seeing if it makes a differance. and if it doesnt then at least youve narrowed it down more. thats what Id do anyway
