for those who have larger wheels then the standard
please post what you have, rim size and tyre sizes as well as which insurance company your with

i am with budgetdirect
and i think i am only allowed to get wheels according to the placard on the drivers door which is 185/60/14 rims are 14x5

so what are my options

Most civic/CRX's are 15" factory right?
So yeh, 17" should be the bigest and probly like Mo said 1" in width.

the EG comes stock with 14x5" rims

problem is insurance company will void my policy if the rims and tyres are too large
still unsure of the largest size permitted by my insurance as i rang twice and they both gave me different information

its meant to be 2"s bigger... civics come with 14's, im on 17's now.... isnt too much of a hassle... insurance is okay with it.

does anyone know if the civic came with 14x5 or 15x5.5
cause my placard on the drivers door have both of them printed

so its alright to have a rim larger in 2" for the diameter
how about the width?
also tyre size?

I have a Speedy Wheels magazine here with one of those size guides on the back. It says civics come with 15"... and you can get 17 fairly easy.

Mate are you in NSW? If so, check out the RTA website, and d/l the RTA Australian Road Rules and have a read. This topics been covered before very recently.... not too hard to do a quick search before posting up the same questions.

You're allowed to go 2" bigger in diameter and 1" wider in width.... so if your stock wheels are 14 x 5" , then ur legally allowed by the RTA to fit 16 x 6" rims on. but dont listen to me, good read it up. :) ppl will tell u all sorts of different stuff. hope that helps.

16 x7 is about as large as you want to go without running into any troubles i believe (not from a legal standpoint but because of the car)

EG civic came stock with 14 inch wheels dood - i believe 15 inch was optional - not sure on width -

BUT I was running 15 x 7 enkei rp01's - illegal to the best of my knowledge - but cops never said anything. Probably coz "only 15 inch" - best to look up the rules on teh RTA website IF u really are worried - but id just run the risk.

call up Honda or just keep searching the net. :)
RTA allows u to have up to 1" wider and 2" bigger than ur widest/biggest OPTIONAL wheel available for ur vehicle at time of sale......

i called up the RTA
what i was told is different to the information provided in this thread
so i will clear things up

there is no such thing in NSWs that is +2 " diameter and +1" width

its total diameter + 15mm
as for width its based on your vehicles unladen weight
>800 kg + 1"
800-1200 kb + 1.5"

thats how it works out

now does anyone know what was the largest opened rim/wheel for the EG Civics 1992 - 1995

on my user manual is lists alot of tyre sizes in the tyre sections including rims as well

it does mention a 15x5.5 and 195/55/15
but i am unsure was that size offered as an option at time of sale

Diameter plus 15mm is correct.

VTiRs came with 15 inch wheels and CXis etc came with 14s. However, the CXi also had optional 15inch wheels from Honda.

Here's where it gets interesting: If you have no placard then the dealer did the diameter plus 15mm thing. However, if you are placarded then you can go 15inch plus 15mms to increase your diameter.

My suggestion is to check your placards, feed it all into a calculator and there you go :)

For those that say the cops won't crack down on you exceeding the magic figures, you either are playing the odds... or don't live in NSW :P

... and then I read EG Civic, not EK :?

14 inch wheels was all Australia got on the top of the range Si unless there was a factory option for 15s (I have no idea). The JDM EGs got 15s but that means nothing in Australia.

thats what i am trying to figure out as well
my placard has 2 rim sizes 14x5J and 14x5.5J, which one is correct?

i am getting confused because in the user manual under tyres it does mention 15x5.5 rims and 195/55/15 tyres so i am not sure whether the EG's did come with a 15" option

so does anyone know if the EG civic came with a factory option for 15"s

interesting with the unladen weight/width thing dude.... when i spoke to RTA "Technical" department and read the documentation off the RTA website it didn't mention anything about the extra allowed inch for a heavier vehicle..... ill have to confirm that.....

By TOTAL diameter, would they include the tyre as well? That would make sense, as I am sure an uncalibrated speedo would be defectable.

Its like determining legal ride height, everyone has heard something different.

Don't drive like an idiot and you'll never get pulled over...or get 17's that look like 16's (DAMMIT!)

jaffa_cree

yea
rolling diameter = total diameter including tyre sidewalls

main reason i wanna stay in legal limits are incase of an accident and need to make a claim

insurance can void policy if your vehicle is not roadworthy which includes larger rims

As quoted by NRMA

1994 Civic GLi - No limit on how large the rim diameter can be but tyre width must not be more than 6".

I've only found Simmons who manufacture 17's with 6" wheels

according to the RTA road standards that's incorrect. I strongly suggest you check again. Were you quoted over the phone by a "consultant" on $30k/ann.? I too have been quoted just about every variant/interpretation of these laws under the sun by different insurance companies and call centre staff. www.rta.nsw.gov.au <---the only place u should check for concrete info. hope that helps.

how would u guys measure the actual width of rim ?
would u measure it without a tyre??
and teh full left from one end to the other?

because 5inch is pretty damn thin, when i measured my stock crx wheel
it was 14 x 6inches wide ??

Was only quoting what NRMA say I can have, not the law. I could obviously have larger wheels, which are legal, but risk not being insured.
