View Full Version : Clutch whine?

Ok, so the situation is this: sometimes when I take off in first gear, my car would make a loud whining/whurring sound from the engine area. I'm not exactly sure if it's because of the clutch but I am thinking it is because it only happens when I try taking off in first gear and the sound usually disappears if I dip the clutch back in a bit or if I give it a bit more gas.

This video accurately shows the sound that my car makes in pretty much the exact same situation. Although, my noise sounds a bit more high pitched.

I did some searching on google and saw some mention of clutch bearings. I don't know much about cars so I'm not so good with all the technical jargon but from what I gather, it seems like my clutch could be dying? Anyone know what might be wrong and how much it'd cost to fix?

does it happen for any other gears??

possbibly the flywheel needs machining.

possibly your spiggot bearing (clutch bearing) is goneskies. if your going to replace this, u might as well change the clutch if your due and machine the flywheel too.

worse case scenario would be that your g/box synchros are gone...

gl dude...not cheap to fix

My old 4wd had the same problem, and it was the small spiggot bearing.

just like IBOOST said, its not cheap to fix. The spiggot bearing is like 10bux

It only happens when taking off from first gear and only on some occasions.

Damn, sounds like I'm gonna have to do some saving :(

Same engine and problems as mine so I've got in my garage for it:

exedy clutch kit and bearings
lightened flywheel (been wanting to know the difference for years)
mt fluid x3 bottles
sump gasket (small leak)
rear main seal (change this as well when the flywheel is off)
exhaust gaskets

good up to $1k in labor at most places
