hey guys. my car shit itself today and i need urgent help.

i was cruising along in a 60mh/h zone, just changed from 2nd to 3rd, started coasting, then when i went to put my foot down to keep my speed up nothing happened, looked at speedo/tacho and everything was on zero so my car had died, battery light and oil pressure light come on at the dash of course.

so after being stuck at some traffic lights with my hazzards i got a push.

car is a dec 94 build dc4 with b18b2, 285xxx kms

car cranks over but wont start.

when we first opened the bonnet, one of the spark plug leads had popped off the dizzy.

when i turn ignition on i can hear the fuel pump? in the fuel tank priming. but when i try to start it just cranks.

a few people have suggest the fuel pump? or the fuel filter? or whatever it is in the engine bay. could it be my dizzy has shit itself?

please help!

ps. my car has turned off like this by itself once before, except it started again.

where can i get one on a sunday though?

chauster

Not sure Lukey! Some wreckers are open on Sundays. Actually i think most are open. Try call some up. I dont think installing a dizzy is too hard.

Yeah cause you can hear the fuel pump meaning its working but no sparks. iunno im no expert but im pretty sure its dizzy.

agree with Chauster, get the dizzy looked at first as i remember with mine, the screws under the diz cap were loose and needed tightening...like urs my car wudnt start

also if one of your plugs pops out whilst driving the car wont die but will rattle, and become very loud...
when it cranks does it turn on momentarily then die in like half a second? if so it may be ur ignition switch

syd has the same issue. the dizzy died. he had it replaced and now it drives - he just needs to get the timing fixed now.

it just continuously cranks.

am i able to pull my dizzy of and pull it apart to have a look? or am i better off getting a new one?

pretty sure you can. dizzy comes with 3 parts? cover, base and coil? I'm not sure how you do it though, never tried.

might aswell have a look at it if your gunna get it replaced...remove the plastic cover and have a look at the grounded bolts, if they are loose tighten them

whend u last change ur plugs? and before u buy a dizzy get ur mech or someone experienced to have a look at it just incase

i had the plugs changed about probably about 25000kms ago, theya re ngk iridiums, i pulled one out and had a look, looked fine.

and i dont have a mech, cos im a 1st year apprentice mechanic

looking at the service manual i got on my pc, i suspect it could be the fuel filter, as i can hear the fuel pump priming.

it also suggests pgm-fi relay but i dont have the stuff at home to check it nor do i understand electrical very well.

the service manual i got on my pc it should be replaced every 60k miles or 96k kms, but i got some pics of a service books from an aus dc2r, and it says it should be replaced every 40k kms, and mine hasnt be replaced since i got the car about 75k kms ago.

i think i should be looking at that

check your coil pack

Lukey
23-10-2010, 06:40 PM
how do i do that?

grifty

how do i do that?

u dont have any......

it could be that the coil or the ignition module craped itself, you can try changing the fuel filter but i dont think thats your problem.

is timing belt cover hard to remove?

grifty
23-10-2010, 07:35 PM
nope, just a few bolts to remove the top half

if ur car still cranks then it shouldnt be a broken timing belt

Lukey
23-10-2010, 07:37 PM
thats what i thought but another mate (3rd or 4th year apprentice i think) said it just wouldnt spin the cams.

grifty

have a look anyways its pretty simple to remove the cover (assuming the rocker cover doesnt have to come off)

my car did the same tried turning it back on but it just continuously cranked, checked my spark plug leads and the inside of the leads it had broken off,
there's no spark going to the engine
my bet its the spark plug leads or dizzy

Lukey

ok i just tested for spark, getting no spark. will pull apart the dizzy tomorrow.

i did have topgun leads, but when i removed 2 of them the metal inside of them stayed on the spark plugs, so i put my oem plug leads on.

you just had the same problem as i did then no need to check the dizzy if your car starts with the oem spark plug leads :).

pull out the hose where the fuel enters the fuel filter and turn car on to see if it is pumping

Try getting a push start to see if it starts. Wen this happen to my car i was like arhggg.. it would just crank and crank then it would make a weird noise. Changed my leads and spark plugs and it fixed. I was guna change my dizzy but sparks n leads are the cheaper option. Or take ur back seat off and look for any obvious damage to the fuel pump. I saw a thread on here were a guys type s just stoped working. Turned out one of the wires had been cut :/

its not starting... and im not getting any spark.

if my fuel pump wasnt working i wouldnt hear it priming when i turn ignition on.

Replace your fuel filter, but I dont see how it would be affecting the car as you describe.
As you've said no spark but you get fuel prime and crank so it sounds like an electrical fault.

i had mine replaced not long ago. notice no difference, not sure if it has caused it but my fuel consumption went up around the time it was changed

it sometimes when you do notice the fuel pump making the sound is when its going to break down since they normally play a different note when there about the go

if your timing belt has snapped you wont have spark.

rule of thumb. check the things you can get to first. Before spending money! take timing cover off check that the timing belt is still intact, and make sure it is still firm, may have jumped a few teeth.
take the line going from fuel filter to injectors off to see if you have fuel, check all fuses, if you know anyone with another integra swap over ecu's and sparky leads.

did u get it working lukey?

Lukey
26-10-2010, 08:44 PM
nah not yet everyone at work has been to busy to help me out pretty much, have booked it in though.

and if my timing belt snapped, my dizzy wouldnt spin.

and i cant get the upper timing cover off anyway, as theres a bit under the rocker cover and behind the engine mount
