Today i was driving and only a few metres down the road the car was bogging/cutting off in revs and moments later the idle jumped back up... it didnt do it for a while after, then it did it again, the idle would drop in revs but somehow the car would still be on and bog out and eventually die, while i was stopped at a set of traffic lights.

tried starting it again and it sort of started and died so i gave it gas. while doing this i heard sputtering and backfire noise from the exhaust and light smoke started coming out of my intake and smell of petrol.

I tried starting it again 10 minutes later and last attempt it started but was about to die so i gave it a bit of a rev and it was fine & manage to get it home.

Next morning
Changed fuel pump : not even close to starting now.
Checked for fuel coming out of fuel filter when Disconnected
Checked for fuel on the fuel rail hose when Disconnected
Checked for spark out of leads
Checked spark plugs for spark and gave it a clean
Checked for any engine light
Checked fuses
Checked petrol gauge: 1/2 tank

pulled rocker cover off and had a look at the timing belt and its on tight.
Any ideas?

If it starts momentarily then dies off, its the ignition switch, easy to fix.

it could also be something as simple as the mounting of the spark plug leads on the distributor, also take the dizzy cap off and check that the screws inside arent loose?

just change your plugs just in case. does it start at all now ?

i had this problem, ended up being the spark plugs, and i changed the leads aswell.
i cleaned the plugs and it did nothing at all

started it just enough to gett home. swtiched it off, didnt start till i got new plugs and leads.

tiny bit of smoke also came frm the sri intake i had.
