Do highway patrol cars who are measuring speed either inside the car or with a lidar or radar gun outside have to get into the car and chase you to verify who is driving in order to issue an offence?

I saw one on the M4 today, and i was going around the corner at 70 and it's a 60 corner - i was just going with the flow (no excuse I know)...anyway there was a cop car sitting there no one outside, just inside the car im guessing and im guessing they were measuring speed around the corner as you enter the M4...so if that's the case then i reckon i would have got caught. But my mate told me they have to chase you or pull you over to verify details (like your the driver of the car) in order to issue a fine. Is that true? Or do they just send it to you in the mail?

Tbh i don't think you've been done....
They DON'T need to pull you over to book you but it'd be to difficult for them to book people as so many cars would take the corner faster then what you should be doing...
Everyone does it tbh.....

I think you'll b right.

EDIT: Stick to the speed limit =)

Mate just do the speed limit and you won't have to ask these questions, technically they would have to pull you over to check your license/rego/ breath test etc

Been done before, highway patrol cars have inbuilt speed camera's. But if you we're going too fast it'll literally do a "U turn" and pull you up. Thats my experience anway. Tried to be a lil smart and asked for evidence of my speed, he told to me to come for a walk, looked inside his car on the dash, had my speed. So can't complain.

Sorry but I had to lol. Worth a try though!

So Highway Patrol does need to pull you over, but regular fixed cameras don't?

they wont pull you over for going 10 over. seriously depends on what kind of day they're having, i was on bell st coburg and got pulled over because i didn't indicate merging lanes.. (going from the left lane to the right lane) 2 points and $130 later.

Look, if you get done by a fixed speed camera, sucked in fool !........
A mobile (ie moving) radar is a different kettle of fish....meaning you will be pulled over by the police to confirm your offence
A portable fixed will not have anyone that stops you, it is a digital camera that can take multiple fast images of multiple speeding vehicles....
The main thing here is, you have said you were speeding, so if you get fined, bad luck....
The argument "everyone else was" is completely useless, because again you are admitting you know you were at fault....
Ignorance is no defence.

By the way....the idea 'you won't get done for only 10 over' is also complete bulls**t......

is it really ? i no of 2 people (females) pulled over for not indicating and getting warnings only. so go figure.. upto how good of a day theyre having.
also with regard to speeding 10kph over they wont literally pull you over on the spot but you will get a fine.

So you're telling me that depending on what kind of speed detecting technology in their car they will either pull you over or not? Weird...

Yeah I know, don't speed... I could have killed someone + speeding is dangerous etc. Obviously no excuse from a legal perspective anyway.

Well the M4 as I enter from strathfield (off parra road) it had a cop car sitting there but it has to account for one lane on its left and 2 lanes on the right so i don't know how it can do both, nor do i know which lane he was concentrating on nor do i know if there was anyone in the car...it was dark....

Ive heard the same that the speed camera cant get an accurate reading because your cars following a curve, never gave it much thought but that is possible? Not that id ever try that theory out lol

Yeah well my girlfriend told me they're not allowed to put cameras on the side of the road when you're driving downhill but I reckon she's wrong.

She's been pulled over twice in the 27 months we've been dating, both times for 'mild' speeding, and has been given a warning each time. But then she's a D cup and she pretended to cry the first time - I suppose it's up to the cop's discretion?

IMO the people who speed regularly/significantly, drag race in built-up/busy areas or just drive stupidly (like those people who pull up behind you at like 30km over the limit and pull alongside you at the last second) are the ones who should be chased down. Not the poor bloke who accidentally went 5km over the limit in a moment of absent-mindedness.

Fixed cameras are fine because they give you ample warning with 3 signs, but mobile speed cameras/radars cannot be stationed on a decline/hill - it's the law boys and girls.

Agreed. Especially the chaps in clapped out Bogan Commonwhores who think that by weaving past you at the last minutes proves that they have bigger dicks than you.

Exactly. Silly as it sounds I actually have Crime Stoppers saved in my phone and I make a habit of reporting people who behave like that, when possible. Simply because I know I'm an 'entertaining' driver sometimes, but I sure don't go around deliberately trying to intimidate others in such a dangerous manner.

Can you actually get people in trouble by calling up and saying this driver with number plate blah blah is driving in a blah blah manner?

But then I've heard anecdotal stories of people receiving fines in the mail because they've been spotted dropped cigarette butts out their window by civilians.

Either way I like to hope that it helps. Maybe it's goes onto a database and after a while the authorities will develop some sort of ongoing list of complaints for future use? :(

My mate got a fine in the mail to see the epa and he wasnt even pulled over. Either way if a cop has proof that is was you speed or doing something wrong then they have the authority to fine you.

Just seen a highway patrol car before coming back from work before, Sitting at the school. Only one copper inside and the car, was parked on the grass facing to oncoming traffic. So im guessing he's got some sorta device that auto detects speed/non-registered cars etc.

What you think the point of court is? To argue? Evidence is required in winning a case.

What you gonna do when you appear in court when you dobbed on someone, you gonna say "he dropped a ciggy out of the window and was speeding"

And the defendant goes "i wasn't speeding nor did a drop my ciggy, this guy has a grudge on me cause i was not driving fast enough on 'his' lane so he dobbed on me"

What's the judge going to say? What;s to stop people making false complaints? I doubt this exists, unless you have evidence of this i doubt it exists.

Okay, just to clear things up because lots of people are getting confused.
If you report a hoon driver through Crime Stoppers the police force can gather this information and use it to target repeat offenders or focus their attention on specific areas where hoon driving appears to be more common. Just watch A Current Affair when they follow a police crackdown on hoon gatherings. The cops don't just read hoon's minds and figure out where to go!

So if you enjoy being safe (and having your car safe!) on the road and want to appreciate your vehicle-passion in an appropriate way then this is not a waste of time. I love my cars and am genuinely more concerned for their panels than I am for my own health at times, silly as it sounds. If I can get just one of those dangerous and intimidating morons off the road by calling Crime Stoppers then I'm happy.

I doubt anybody would go to court because one single person made a complaint. But in the event that a person does go to court, for whatever reason, I think a testimony from a witness would be relevant. Especially if you have several witnesses from various dates, all reporting similar behaviour.

The point of court is not just to provide evidence after all. Testimony and cross-examination are paramount to the support of a case during litigation but depending on what jurisdiction the court is under it may be a simple case of the judge deciding who they think is 'right' and what the appropriate outcome should be. This is why we have different courts - Civil court, Federal court, Federal Magistrate court etc to deal with different proceedings as appropriate. Not all courts have juries.

Also, lying in your testimony in the court of law whilst under oath is a criminal offense. Who the hell would risk making a false complaint?

lies i got done going downhill leaving sydney to melbourne at 3am on a 3 lane hwy near mittagong where they have the huge hills to descend/ascend.

i was building up speed for the uphill where flat footed i was maxxing out at about 70 (motorhome) and i still got done by a radar on the downhill 110+.
