Hi all, I have a 93 eh9 si with a broken d16a8 motor. I have bought a standard d16y4 motor. I plan to convert this in while still running the d16a8 gearbox. I later plan on putting on a y8 head.

Now I am confused in terms of wiring the motor. I have the ecu off the y4 and have access to the standard wiring harness aswell. I am wondering what I can do to make this work?

I know that the car is now running on an obd1 ecu, and the y4 ecu is a p2k, is this an obd2a or obd2b ecu? Also, what conversion harness will i need? Can I put the d16a8 intake manifold on the d16y4 head to make the wiring easier? Will I need an obd1 distributor?

cannot use d16a8 gearbox on your d16y4. input shaft in transmission has different spline size. search with these keywords for more info. (bennjamin, d16a8, transmission, gearbox) or something of similar words for more precise findings.

waste of time and money trying to locate y8 head & installation, will most likely need y8 ecu or similar.
y4 dont have vtak. you should get another a8 motor and save your money for something better.

yes im one of those ppl who think it's useless to work a d. hi hello how are you?

for a start....you CAN use the d16a8 gearbox on the d16y4 - BUT you must reuse the driveshafts and flywheel and clutch from the d16a8 ( or to suit).

Second - easiest way to run the d16y4 with your wiring - is do this. Grab a D15b7 (gli) inlet manifold , distributor , water hard line (from thermostat to water pump) and all rubber piping behind....then just reuse it all. Make sure the inlet mani has the ICAV connected. Simply install the above parts on the d16y4 motor. Then rehook up your existing wiring loom and good to go

for ecu, make sure you use p06 which is the gli ecu from EG, it would be most suitable.

Like mention above, you could also use y1 intake mani as well..

Ok, so now I am in possession of an obd1 p28 ecu, a d16y8 head, and a d16y4 engine with harness and gearbox. I also have the full d16a8 out of the car. I am willing to try and run the a8 box on the motor after I assemble it.

M yquestion is what is the issue with the iacv? Do I need one off a obd1 car, and what distributor do I require? Am I able to use the y4 dizzy?

Thanks for your help guys.

I was told the vtec head i had was a d16y8 but it is actually a d16y1, this is good because it will run in the obd1 harness that i have, the head came with intake mani with all sensors and vacuum lines attached. All i need to buy now is a obd1 distributor. The setup will be a y1 head, y4 block, and the d16a8 gearbox. I have started assembling it and I will be doing the gearbox swap last. New headbolts and headgasket are going in too.

P.s. I made a bitch pin removal tool for the shift linkage at work, i am an apprentice cnc machinist and i made a punch type tool that gets it out in 2 smacks with a hammer. I might make a few more if anybody is interested?

Interesting mix of engine components to say the least!

Question I was going to ask, what headgasket and headbolts are needed?

So I just put on the d16a8 box to the y4 block. I ess measuring and the input splines, flywheel, clutch etc were all exactly the same. I also put it in gear and span the crank and this turned the outputs. I'm thinking that it is going to work?

It is in the car now, I can't test if it runs because I dont have a d16y1 distributor. I should have that in a few days so when its all done and running i will post pictures and possibly a video. cheers for all of your help

you misunderstand posts above -

the d16a8 gearbox WILL fit another D series engine.....but you need the D16a8 driveshafts (L/R and midshaft) and the flywheel and clutch from the d16a8 too. Make sense ?

Works fine, sorry had the swap and everything all done a couple of months ago. Pretty good setup, drives well, very reliable, etc. I love it. I will have pics up as soon as I can.
