Hey guys.

Some may know me already from the Prelude section.
I came to the last annual QLD cruise, and the wife had such a good time she decided she wanted a Honda of her own.

I found a 1989 JDM CRX in kinda sad shape. It was a reasonable car, but sadly neglected.
I picked it up for a reasonably good price and started looking for some parts.
While doing so I came accross a 1991 which had been crashed, which I snatches up for parts imediatly.

The JDM has a full glass roof. But had drum rear breaks, and strangely had NO sway bar what soever.
The AUDM however had 4 wheel disk breaks. And unless it was a factory option i am not aware of, someone had gone to the trouble of fitting slotted rotors all round. (I know verry little about the CRX models at this stage)
Also the JDM has a 1.5L SOHC dual carby, D15 motor and 5cog manual. The parts car has a 1.6L DOHC EFI D16.
The JDM is a 2+2 and the AUDM is a 2 seater.

Basicy, i'm stripping the AUDM to build up the JDM.

I have already stripped off the 4 wheel disks, and swapped them into the JDM. Have yet to swap the break master cylinder and booster. But that won't take long.
And I am considering wether or not to swap out the D15 for the AUDMs D16. (perhaps I should wait, and get hold of a B series, or even a H22 to repower it.)

Basically, i'm new to the CRX 'thing'. And am wondering what the usual DO's and DONT's are.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share on the subject. And don't think anything is too basic to bring up. As I said, I know NOTHING about CRX's except that I have always considered them to be an awesome little car.

Thanks again.

Pacman....

The JDM CRX you've bought is an EF6. It's basically an EF8 minus the B16A, RSB, big rotors etc. It will have all the JDM features, including curved front indicators, JDM bumpers, raised bonnet, black trim around the rear tail lights as well as the lovely glass roof and rear seats.

The AUDM CRX never came with slotted rotors so they're either aftermarket or (hopefully not) OEM's with slots.

B18C will be a better choice over B16A imo, do it once and do it right

Just hope he doesn't have to source one! The only one I've seen for sale lately is Pav's and that's $500 in average condition lol

Haha yeah true. The CRX isn't the cheapest car to own unfortunately. Most panels aren't easy to find and the JDM ones especially are expensive/rare.

Well lucky me. The actual body of the JDM is clean and straight. A good clean 2+2 with a ton of potential. And i'm a patient man. With a willing co-pilot.

What could go wrong....go wrong.... Go wrong....!

Well I only know 2 things about the CRX. JACK and SHIT....
Well, 3 things actually. Cause I know i've always liked them.

But thats part of why i'm here. To learn. Hopefully i'll learn before I make any silly mistakes which could devalue the build.

Which brings me back to my origonal post. Are there any MUST NOT's and any MUST DO's....

I repaired a front CB Accord Aerodeck front bar that was quite badly damaged and distorted with careful use of a hot air paint stripper gun (Bosch 630 DCE) which is variable from 50c to 400c. (Think I set it at 280c)You can get attachments to do plastic welding as well with that gun but I just glued and reinforced it where necessary with alloy plates and f/glass and bogged it up. Looked as good as new (well almost if I'm honest).

Don't be tempted to buy a cheap gun. I did at first and when I used it my wife came running out to the shed asking me why all the lights in the house were dancing up and down. Took it back to Bunnings (was on special), they didn't believe me till they plugged it in at their lighting dept and made the whole department's display do the same. Very gratifying.

Well, I spent a good deal of today swapping breaks and susspension, from the donor car to the project car.

I only have a few more hours work, and she should be ready for roadworthy and rego....

Once I get the turbo up and running in the Lude. I'm going to do a forged internal build.
Then i'll be upgrading the turbo on the Lude so I can push more boost.
That will give me a spair turbo. And a CRX.... Do the math dude..... LOL

nice looking CRX. Looks nice and stockish. I'm not a fan of bodykits, and too many CRXs have got em. Gen 2 CRX has a nice late 80s pocket rocket look IMO.

Gotta put in at least a B16 in it.

Sorry to say, she is getting a kit. Already have a boom kit for her. Will be fitting soon after rego.

Meanwhile, I have her ready for rego, except for a set of tyres.

hi there and welcome!

i was skimming thru the pages, and ran into the "front bar" dilemma.

www.allcrashparts.com.au

that site will literally bring up a whole list of replacement parts that are needed.
they are not OEM or genuine items from Honda, but they are A1 replica's of the originals ( as you cannot get them new anymore)

they fit hella flush and are not pricey as-well

my front headlights and parkers needed a replacement, got new ones for 268 brand spanking new

back to the front bumper thing, you will need to remove the front bar, then have a look at the condition of the reinforcement bar to see if it is still straight.
these reinforcement bars are a tad hard to find, but if yours is repairable or straight? then that's luck on your side.

your car does remind me of the day i first picked up my little crx.

if you would like to know more, or have any question in regards to your crx rebuild/build. please do not hesistate to ask and shoot me a PM

all the best.

Not a fan of those seats. Looks like they came off a China-made Ute. What happened to the original seats?

Suggestion: Find a pair of Recaros from a Satria GTi. They are dirt cheap these days.

Well i've got one NOW... LOL
I'm pulling the seats tonight. But considering their rearity, i'll shed them. Perhaps even get the torn one repaired.
As i've said previously, i'm putting in my 4th gen VtiR prelude seats. Should be in tonight. And the grey will go with the seats nicely.
Still not sure what engine to swap in. I already have a D16 with a box and loom. But keep thinking a B is the way to go...
(spoiled by H22...)

B16a is a cheap option. Doesn't take long to save up for. Good bang for buck, or b18c2 which is also cheap.

Naturally i'm thinking, the more power the better.
And i'd probably not want to boost it. At least not straight away.
And it'll have to retain all the little pleasantries like A/C, power steering etc.
So i'm leaning towards the B18. Whats the point in going the B16 swap. Honda already did it.. LOL

anyhow.... It'll be rolling for some time on the D15 it has now.
i have a spare D16 and box already. Just seems pointless to swap that in then pull it out again later...!

Well, the CR-X passed roadworthy yesterday. (19/11)

I was most impressed with the brake test. (after having done the brake conversion myself, sure I realize it's not rocket science. But interesting all the same)

The car went from 98km/h, to a stand still in 2.9 seconds. Max of 1.12g's (average of 0.94g's)

But the real news is that she passed roadworthy. And will officially be back on the road as of Monday...!

Yeah, it was a relief. They went right over it though. But I had everything right from the begining.

Hey Man good luck. Do the extra Saving and get yourself a b18c, and they fit in pretty easily as opposed to some other engines and they're completely worth it.
