I was cruising along and whilst taking a fairly high speed corner I noticed that my battery light came on. I pulled up, checked out the belt, everything still in tact n seems to be operating just fine. My CD player shows battery voltage n seems to be consistant with what it would normally show... Roughly 13.5V whilst cruising and 12.5-13.5V on idle. With car switche off it's still showing 12.4ish.
What could be the issue since I've done about an hours worth of driving since the light has come on but the voltage hasn't dropped yet. Could there be a wire that has come loose? Is there an alternator fuse I can check out (I had a look in the fuse boxes, footwell n engine bay, and I couldn't find an alternator fuse)?
Thanks in advance for ur help. I'm actually still fairly far frm home n a bit sketchy about driving long distance in case the battery dies n I can't get the thing started again.
Cheers,
Pav

The car is a JDM B18CR swapped DC4. Alternator came with the motor n is fairly fresh, roughly 70xxx k's on it. Very hard to tell but I think I'm hearing a very very faint whining sound from the alternator, not sure if it's always been there tho.

use a multi meter
12.5 is to low for the engine running, 13.5 is boarderline and and you will want it to be around 14.7v max
sounds like your altenator brushed are worn or the regulator is dead

Thanks John, i was actually hoping ud c this forum haha
Yeah thats what i figured too. The fact that the light came on all of a sudden and hasnt disappeared since, would that suggest that its likely to be the regulator? I would have thought that if the brushes were on their way out it would have been a gradual thing. I did a fair bit of driving since the light initially came on but the voltage hasnt dropped much... ofcourse at night with the headlights on it sits a bit lower, around the 13V mark. I tested with a multimeter and its sitting on 13.7V on idle/cruise with basically no electronics on.
How can i tell if its the regulator? Is there a way of testing it? Where is it located?
Thanks a lot for your halp mate! :)

the regulator is insire the altenator, they can be removed from the back on some altenators.
the regulator is the actual connector housing as well. you will want to pull the alt out and inspect the brushes 1st, if they look very thin then replace them and see how it goes, if you still have voltage issues replace the regulator as well.
you can load up the electrical system by turning on the AC, rear dermistor, blower fan to full, hi beams ect

Ok cheers, i managed to get a hold of a B18B2 alternator (which i believe is the same) for real cheap n will give that a go.
