View Full Version : FD Civic brake pads: Rear wear faster than front, is it normal?

When I flushed my 2006 FD Civic's brake fluid in the weekend, I found that the rear brake pads is worn almost twice faster than the front ones, that appears to be against to the common conception that the front pads should wear faster than the rear ones.

Any comments?

Thanks.

I bought the Civic brand new and the pads have never been replaced before.

i would have thought that on a fwd car the front brake pads would wear faster, but on my last service i was made to replace my rear brake pads ahead of my front pads. so, it could be that the rear actually does wear out faster than the front pads.

I would have thought the same as aero, since its a fwd car. Thats strange, unless your locking the brakes up often.

I just did my 40k service and I had to change my rear brake pads too.

Might be normal...

It seems that my Civic is not an exceptional.

How about other guys in the forum who have a FD Civic, you replace your rear brake pads earlier than the front ones? If that's really the case, perhaps Honda uses a lower wear resistant material on Civic's rear pads.

BTW, my other car, rear wheel drive Ford Falcon, the front brake pads always wear out faster (about 40,000 km) than the rear ones (about 60,000 km).

Very depend on your driving style, also rear brake pad are smaller than the front pad, that why wear out more faster.

Never replaced pads, but this is interesting news...

Too much drifting guys!

I thought all cars, regardless of drive layout, should wear the front faster... simply cos you have more traction up front when braking

^ your right..front should wear faster regardless of drive layout...fronts need more braking power than the rear because almost all the weight of the car is absorb by the front brakes while braking..thats why front rotors are bigger than the rear...

I agree with you, curtis265 and fitme.

Just be puzzled what's the reason behind my Civic's front brake pads wear out faster.

Any reasonable explanations?

I just read a Q&A in today's Herald Sun's Car Guide.

A reader's Honda Accord also has a similar brake pads matter to the Civic. It seems to be that the manufacturer (Honda and some European car makers as well)'s new design makes the rear wear out faster.

that sounds a bit negative lol. what they should have said is that the manufacturer has designed it so the front pads are more durable than the rears :p

the more important question is what pads you guys are replacing the stock ones with?

another thing is.. if the back braking harder than the front.. isn't that dangerous if it comes close to locking the rears up?

i was talking to my mech on why my rear pads worn faster than the fronts
he said because of the Honda's brake contribution in Honda is 60 front and 40 rear and rear pads are half the size thats why

Honda has the best braking distance in its class and this is why

I repalced my front with Bendix and wishing to go back to stock

stock pads are actually really good

I had this issue too. I spoke to the dealer when they did the service and it turns out the excessive wear is due to the electronic brake distribution system, which aims to give even brake pressure to all four wheels. Given the rear pads are smaller than the rear, they will wear faster.

^ i thought EBD automatically varies(not equal amount of force) applied to each brakes depending on speed or road conditions...i think the best answer on why the rear pads wear faster is just because....

a. rear rotor is smaller in diameter and will give more pressure to the pads
b. typically front rotors carries the most weight and EBD put less pressure to the rear so it wont lock-up...resulting the pads wear faster
