Hi, was reading the thread about ebay headers and people seem to praise them saying they're pretty good. So I was wondering what people thought of cheap ebay intake kits?
This is the one I'm looking at:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/COLD-AIR-FILTER-INTAKE-POD-96-97-98-HONDA-CIVIC-EK-/370437818114?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item563fd08702
Do you guys reckon this will be better than the stock air box and whether this is worth it? Or would I be better off getting a better known branded kit like Simota/AEM/etc. This is for a D series engine btw, thanks.

Looks good to me. I never understand why people spend up to $400 for an Injen. It's just pipe. I reckon the staff at those companies must piss themselves laughing every time somebody buys an intake, because they know how cheaply/easily/quickly they fab'd it up.
If the pod filter is crap you can always order one straight from 3A Racing - $26 for a proven fiilter with R&D behind it. Or get a Fujita pod, whatever.
And for that price what have you got to lose? :D

The ebay kit doesn't say if it's for D or b series. If I were you, I'd get a proper brand name one second hand.

Well it says 96-98 Honda Civic EX in the picture and I'm pretty sure all Civic EX models have a d-series engine.

EX is a D16y8 Vti coupe here in Aus.

Still a D series though.
I've got the Simota Whale Penis... Roars!

The kit was simply bolt on.. Unlike most intake kits where Im looking at the parts and go "Where the hell does this go?"
I used every single bolt/nut/washer... extra long hose.
The kit is called the Simota "Twister" or something rather... I didnt stare at the box for too long, just wanted what was inside it.
+20kW in the pants
Hope that helps any one who is looking for an aftermarket intake

Two steel bar things and a strip of rubber. As far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be any screw holes on the intake... Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks :)

Well I went for a test drive just then, can't say I feel any noticable difference in power but throttle response is definitely much better. Can feel a bit of a lurch whenever I put my foot down. The biggest difference would be sound, as soon as I put my foot down to wide-open-throttle, you can hear a very low and loud "brmmmmmmm" sound lol
Also made my D16Y8 SOHC VTEC crossover much louder as well.

The metal parts are for you to mount the intake. The bent piece goes under your hose clamp (on the rubber connector) and is then screwed into your chassis so that it's stable, otherwise you might get a defect because it's just sitting there unsupported. The metal will be soft enough to bend/twist as necessary.
Here are a couple of pictures from my DIY intake. You can see how I've mounted it into one of the standard holes in the strut tower.

As for the rubber strip I have no idea but I can't see exactly how it's shaped from the picture. Maybe is it supposed to go around the hole near where you intake is/the resonator used to be? So that the new intake pipe doesn't scratch on the edges?

I just got the dc2r intake pipe which is pretty big then fit a k&n pod at the end of it, finishing it with 2 cai piping feeds. Costed 150 for the dc2r intake arm, pod and 6m of 10cm ducting piping. I would have almost hydrolocked my engine last week if i had done my own cai, so happy i didnt =D.
I can post a pic if you wanna see what it looks like. But its just a standard intake arm with a pod + a bend xD

that rubber pipe thingy is to put around the hole where the pipe goes through, its so when the pipe touches the edges it doesnt cut through it

Ah, thought so. Thanks for clarifying.
hey guys, thanks for the tips and advice. I priced up a INjen CAI from JDM yard and they said around $4-500, i ended up buying one direct from the states for $290 delivered. Will keep you posted on how it all goes... Cant wait. I looked at teh cheaper ones, but was reallya fter a cold air unit that sits behind the front bar, went with injen as they seem very credible. cheers.

Good choice mate, I love my Injen, I got it second hand for 200.

After a week with the CAI installed, its interesting to note that my fuel consumption has gone up a bit

Don't know if it's due to the CAI, my ECU not fully "learned/adjusted" to the change or because I love planting my foot to the floor just to hear it growl :P
Will see what the figures are like on the next fill up.

I reckon my economy got worse just because I'm tempted to drive the car harder to hear the intake more. I do about 9L/100 now, sometimes 8.5 if I'm lucky :(

i got an sri wit cai feed. I get 600-650km but i dont fill the tank fully. Just put $30 and if its full its full LOL. But loves the induction noise compared to stock.
honestly on an Na car, intakes dont do much for what you pay. Its more for just sound.
for sound, Js racing intakes are king ;)

How did it go with the delivery from the states? Is it brand new? For 290 thats dirt cheap compared to JDM yard.
