Hey all,

I've been doing a bit of reading up. But this is part of my research.

Basically what I want out of the exhaust system is a nice sound. Not farty sounding.

What are your best recommendations? And what price would I be looking at for it? And if you could also add where to buy? (ie, should I buy it all online or should I go to the exhaust shop?)

Thanks

Edit: Hows this look? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/SIMOTA-Honda-Civic-92-01-EG-EK-air-intake-kit-induction-/120640284233?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c16b8a649#ht_3845wt_952

Its all good for a Honda Civic 2000 EK1?

IMO don't get the Simota. Price is cheap, but cold air intake will provide better gains, and get the pod out of the hot engine bay.

As for exhaust, buy a good quality header (second hand is best). For the cat back, get a resonator and 2.25 inch system. Resonator is essential so you don't get drone on the highway. Don't get 2.5 inch cat back as it can be loud. Custom exhaust is a lot cheaper than brand-name stainless cat back. Brand name cat back will cost you 1000 plus. Custom should be mandrel bent vs press bent for better gains. factor in 400 for decent custom cat back mandrel bent mild steel with resonator.

Good second hand header will be 350-900, depending on brand. Spoon/Mugen/Skunk2 are exxy. 5zigen is good if you can get a decent price. Js racing is good also.

High flow cat is useful, factor in 200 for or so.

Hope this helps.

decent header even second hand is at least $500, cats cost abit more than $200 with fitting also.

With a D series, i'd recommend just a xforce bolt on kit, its cheap and not too bad sounding, your not gonna get alot of power fom a D series from just basic mods.
Intake i'd say get a K&N replacement filter, will give it abit more kick and keep the hot air out.

Just get some n*power headers for $160 delivered. Get a decent cat, high flows great. 2 inch system for exhaust, press bent mild steel will do you good. Its a d, the exhaust itself is gonna add like what 5-8hp? press bent vs mandrel on a d is 2hp? Then stainless/mandrel will cost you 200-300 more for minimal gains. Unless your a guy that counts his hp figures and doesnt mind wasting more money then go for the stainless mandrel route. Just remember the whole system must be stainless though, or you will corrode your stainless system.

200-300 for minimal gains? Same as any b or d series. I figure bolt ons give you about 1kw per 100 dollars. Do it right the first time for max gains IMO.

I run a custom header set up to a 2.5 inch custom system finished off with an xforce varex. My car used to have a 3 inch cannon but that was dumb and deafeningly loud.

Whilst the xforce is not jdm branded it does a good job at keeping the noise down for pulling home at 2am and loud for track. Even at fully open there's a nice note without drone.

I just bought the intake that you posted and it works well. I removed the oem resonator, cut a hole in the front bumper and fed a nice cold air feed from bumper to filter. This is working really well despite the Perth summer heat. I will fab a heatshield to cover the pod soon even though it's positioned quite far away from the engine.

Hey thats cool. How long that take you to do? And is it hard? The cutting a hole bit kinda scares me.

its a d series so dont spend big on it man, xforce system should do the job fine, their catback exhausts are not all that expensive either. When I had an EK1 I didnt touch the motor, its a D series its never going to be a performance engine. Thats my opinion anyways each to their own.

Ok thanks. So where should I go to buy this xforce stuff? From the internet or exhaust shop?

Trader on here, look at the race nation in the traders section

^Ok thank you.

I saw on Race nation in the traders section they had this:

Cannon mufflers with silencer
2" inlet cannon from $169
2.25" inlet cannon from $179
3" inlet cannon from $189

Whats the silencer do? And which size do you think provides the best sound?

I want to buy the muffler first then the other parts.

I think larger than 2" might result in a drop in power. The silencer is to avoid drone.

In relation to CAI, it wasn't hard or particularly long to do. Just have to remove the bumper and cut out the fog lamp recess. Lining the cold air feed with the bumper can be tricky tho.

2 inch is good for a d16y4. 2.25 inch max, but will result in a loss of back pressure. Making your low-mid end power rly shit and give u higher top end.

Ok awesome thanks guys I'll buy that one. Does the silencer kill the sound a lot or is it good to have?

Tats the point of a silencer. Lowers your gain from the exhaust but quiets it down. Good for cannons and loud mufflers.

That's why I suggested you get a varex so you can adjust the sound via remote control. You can have the free flow benefits when you need to and quiet at other times.

I see.

I had a look at the Varex but they only have sizes 2.5" and up. I need 2 inch only, yeah?

Also which you recommend, the cannon or oval?

Note I want to buy this first and get the headers, etc, later on. So just bolting this on will be fine with everything else the same, right?

doesnt really matter at the end. They'll make up for it and mate it together. Aslong as you dont go like 2inch headers, 2.5 inch cat then 2.25 backpipe and fk around the flow of exhaust.

Thanks man I appreciate it. Did you do an exhaust to your car?

I'll buy the 2.5 inch varex cannon for my EK1. Reckon thats the best way EK1 Civic?

PS: I apologize if I'm asking stupid questions. Pretty new to this stuff.. first car.

i heard the varex sounds shit. Theres clips on youtube to saying it sounded shit but i dunno. No i havent done an exhaust to my car but i did research the size, header design so i can maintain some back pressure for low-mid end power. Im currently quoting around for the 2 inch back pipe in stainless press since all the other parts are stainless.

I had a 3 inch cannon and changed to a 2.5 inch varex and to me the sound improved. I also think that the intake makes a bit of a difference to how it sounds. With the 3 inch cannon, it was drony everywhere and I could feel bleeding in my ears. The varex doesn't drone and it has a sharp bark on heel and toe downshift which is nice.

ind1, if you want it louder, go for a cannon, I bought an oval muffler because I didn't want it too loud.

I had my car dynoed twice, once with the varex fully open and the other closed and there is a difference of about 4hp atw throughout the rev range. IMHO, it would seem that having this muffler allows for the compromise between noise and performance.

Get w/e muffler you want basically aslong as you planned the rest of it. The noise is mainly what the mufflers gonna do. Whether you want loud or quiet or in between. Oval mufflers are all rounders. Cannons give high end, while ovals give benefits in all areas.

Thanks for all the help guys. :D

Ok listen I went to the exhaust shop today. One in Hudson road, Spotswood. Tidd Brothers exhaust.. Very, very helpful and kind. I didn't get a Varex as well, doing so would mean no food for a few weeks. Considered it then thought, nah, can't do that (rent, BILLS......., groceries, car servicing, etc..). I got the 2" one like you guys recommended and he also recommended.

Ok they kinda look the same in the pictures. I had a tip on my old muffler but it was all rusty looking.

Anyway, got some sound now! :)

Heres a before and after:

Before (was rusty lookin, sorry bad pic):

And after:

He said that if I wanted more noise (completely optional, no pressure, all up to me) that he can put a smaller resonator. What you guys think? Is that a good idea?

Ya. Have you got any vids of your car? or pics? Should I add a smaller resonator? I think it would be fun

Not really only got my Ps like 3 weeks ago and just finished my course for the year. So currently looking for a job to work on my ek a bit lol. It depends on what you wanted to begin with, loud, quiet or medium. Im going for no resonator, just twin loop muffler. It should be quiet enough, hopefully not to quiet without the resonator.

Oh ok cool. I got a job.. Working at Crown Casino as a Blackjack dealer.. Will finally be able to add a few other things. Not much, don't want to go berserk but it will be fun.

Was their not a week ago. Was winning at blackjack till the dealer changed and an asian guy tat looked like the guy from hangover came. Stole my money =/ I wanted to make that 100 bucks, had 90 and only needed 10 more LOL. But ye went down to 30 then left xD. On an ek1 id just go as far as i/h/e, foglights, rims, nice shocks and springs, speakers sub/amp.

Thats gambling for ya.. Sometimes you're lucky, sometimes unlucky, but mostly unlucky :P

Yeah I want to do exactly the same things like you've mentioned apart from rims since I got some and I like 'em. :)

Yeah i got the enkei rims that came as an option when you purchase the car brand new. Their 14" tho, want to get 16". I see too much tyre xD.
