Safe stretch?

I'm currently running 265/35/18 tyres on 18X9 +38 wheels, and thinking to change to 215/40/18 tyres. Will it be safe to drive with the 215's? Or would 225 be a better option?

Im running 235's on 9.5' wide. Ill say go with 225's at minimal.

im running kumho ku31 215/40s on a 17x9. it allows me to go lower without having any scrubbing issues.. and no dramas so far for just street cruising. get urself a good set of tyres with stiff sides if ur gonna stretch. falken do pretty well for making tyres that stretch; ze512, ze912 and fk452 are rated high from the US hellaflush scene.
