Hi just wondering if this would be good to swap my gearbox for the b18c2 one? would there be gains?
My gearbox is getting pretty rough after 220XXXkm its ticking and whining, my friend had just stacked his car and he has the B18c2

Why not swap both the engine and the gearbox? Both are better. :D

went into a tree with damage to the engine. but I'm looking for a quick fix for my box, will it work out?

gear ratios are not good for a b16a IMO. I'm pretty sure you won't be able to keep it in the powerband when you change gears. The gears are too long.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah the car will feel slower, because the gear ratios are designed fort he B18C torque.

It will not match your stock engines power.

I'd say your right Mike. I'm still revving out 2nd after a B16 is in 3rd.

What about the guys that do the b16 and jdm b18c gearbox?

the b18c gearbox is for the type R, it has similar ratios to B16 box + LSD, hence the benefit of such a change.

B18c2 box on the vti-r has longer gearing. Type R box ftw

lol, Webby and I first noticed that when we were going hard head to head one time. Ive also watched heaps of Best Motoring Int. (see type R legend on youtube). B16a makes decent high end power, the box suits it quite well. I usually shift at about 8,400 (near cutout) and it keeps the engine nicely on the boil. A great engine for the track, but not a drag light dragster.

Haha yeah Luke told me about that once.

And +1 for Type R gearbox. I'm going to start looking for one soonish I think.

I find I can shift at 8100 and it won't drop out of Vtec below 6000. Heaps of fun :)

If you need a 'quick fix' and intend to change it later then it should suffice.

What's wrong with your current box? Changed the oil lately?

I've recently changed the oil, i think its the bearings thats making bad noise

Then you don't need to replace the box man, the bearings themselves aren't too expensive, it's just a PITA getting the box on and off. Input shaft bearing noise?

Yea, those closer ratios on my box on a b18c2 would enable you to shift at 8,100 and be at 6500+ rpm in the next gear easily. B16a gearbox would be a bang-4-buck budget solution, but if you can spend more then ITR box is the go.

i have the b18c2 box, but i got the torque to run it in my b16.
The cheap way would be to get the b18c2 and change the FD to a 4.7 or 4.9 which would make that box more feasible for a b16

b16a2 + b18c2 box = nugget..stick with b16a or a itr tranny

Why not go to mfactorys website they have a "gear calculator" and you can see what your speeds and rpms will be.
Its not as big a difference as everyone makes out.

Note: being an Aussie spec, you will likely have a 4.266 FD Not the 4.4 they have listed.
Its worth a look.

If you decide to stick with the b16, can you pm me your friends contact number.
I have a b16 & would be happy with a b18 box. Trying to locate a ITR box in Australia is ridiculous, in the states they grow on trees but $1500 plus is crazy.
