if your car has an airbag yes it will be. I'm pretty sure having any aftermarket steering wheel that isn't ADR compliant is illegal/defectable. Which would be most steering wheels

Other than airbags, as long as its not too small and has a working horn. think 300-320mm. has to be a round steering wheel?

well, i havent had any issues yet.

not entirely true, pre 1996 cars had the option of having an airbag. post 1996 cars, it was compulsory to have air bags. in saying that, any car made in the years 1996 and after are not allowed to have an aftermarket steering wheel without an airbag. if your car was made before 1996 which by looking at the OP's profile, is a 94 dc2 then go nuts mate.

in QLD it is illegal as the steering wheel isnt approved to the ADR that your original steering wheel was. Even if the car is pre 1996.

I know he's in nsw but just saying this is the case in QLD. Read page 8 of this document

no probs dude. like I said thats QLD only but to be honest I think as all cars in aus need to comply to ADRs its most likely relevant to everyone on here. Not saying everyone follows it, I have a sparco wheel in my car and I highly doubt its ADR approved. Just depends whether or not you get busted with it.

to OP, if you have an air bag you may as well keep it, it may not be pretty but it could save your life...

Yo everybody, noob question.

How do I know if a steering wheel is ADR approved?

Replacement steering wheels must not affect compliance with ADR 10 (after 1970) and ADR 69
(after June 1995). Unless a steering wheel is marked, or has accompanying information, as
having been tested to the appropriate ADR, it must not be used as a replacement. In addition,
for vehicles required to comply with ADR 69, the steering wheel assembly must be identical to
one fitted as an option to the same model by the vehicle manufacturer, or alternatively, a
steering wheel that has been certified by the replacement wheel manufacturer as a complying
wheel for the specific make and model may be used.
Replacement steering wheels should not be less than 330mm in diameter. If the original
steering wheel was designed with a recessed or padded hub, the replacement wheel should be
of a similar design.
Removable steering wheels must not be fitted.

I know I just answered my own question right there, but how do I know exactly, apart from asking an Aus seller, buying one overseas? Would overseas steering wheels be marked, or has accompanying information for ADR approvalness? I guess not. So, the only way is to buy from Aus resellers, right? (Apart from getting it certified)

I'm looking to get either a Nardi, Personal, Momo, Sparco steering wheel.

Thanks

I contacted the RTA and the person said a replacement steering wheel would need certification.

unlikely.

lots of the monza wheels and that which are found in AU are ADR approved.

but i bought an OMP deep dish style one. and i doubt (very much doubt) its approved.
But my car also did not come with airbags.

my friend also had a 2000 Lancer with no airbags and got it registered with one of them Monza racing wheels on there.

Get an boss adapter, when you get pulled over.. just say your steering wheel flew out

there is a size requirement too. but if its ADR then it already meets those requirements.
