2001 civic hatch auto gear box problem?

My father in law's car is 2001 civic and done 270000km. serviced at Honda from scratch. He was driving to home and the car didn't move suddenly. it's like neutral when in drive mode. does anyone know what the problem is? Car starts normaly but doesn't move.

Just got call from Honda and they said they need to rebuild gear box. price is way too much.
Is there anyone who can fix this ASAP?
