Hi guys!

Happy new year to all!

Over the holiday season, my engine starting to make a ticking noise thats quite louf & noticable when im pulling up to a stop. For about 2 days, i decided not to hit vtec just incase I'd do some kinda damage, but I did just to try. Vtec seemed to lag until bout 7k rpm - then it cut as if the engine was cold (which it wasn't since I was driving it for bout half an hour before hand and had 3 bars) and the whole car just jolted. I read up a bit on s2ki, and some say that it could be the valves - in which case would an adjustment get rid of the ticking noise and the vtec cut - or are these unrelated?

Also, has anyone purchased aftermarket engine mounts off e-bay - would like to see some feedback if anyone has!

Thanks!

Check your oil again. When cold. Or timing chain tensioner has carked it. It sounds like a loose chain, makes a slapping noise

Not really a slapping noise - i think its either the TCT or needs a valve adjustment. Just wondering if any1 has had the same/similar problem. Thanks for the input guys!

Tappet noise wont harm your car unless its for a longggggggggggg period of time you havent serviced but.. vtec cutting in and out usually has something to do with oil level/pressure. Check your oil again haha

Hey guys,

I did a valve adjustment myself and changed the oil two days ago. the loud tapping noise has disappeared!

There still is a bit of a noise, but I think its normal. Mater later down the track, change the TCT anyway.

Thanks alot!

how difficult was the tappet adjustment? did you use any online guides or anything?

Just the Honda manual for the valve clearances & there was a video on you-tube that helped - wish I could forward u the link but can't access it at work! The most time consuming excercise was taking out the air box though.

Out of all the links from google, this was by far the best step by step instruction link:

http://squeezer.net/s2ki.com/S2K_Valve.pdf

Like I previously said, I cannot access youtube at work - but its definitely worth while doing so before you start this - especially if you've never removed your rocker cover so you're not in for a shock!.

Tips:
Removing your air box is as easy as pie - but it takes longer than removing your rocker cover. Also, have a system so that you know where to put what when re-installing everything - I accidentally put my vacuum hoses the wrong way, and after doing the adjustment heard this weird ass suction noise. Once again, I searched this on you tube and found out my mistake!!

Make sure your car is in neutral!! otherwise you might run over your foot wen turning the crank shaft!

Also,

I ordered these from Honda before I started any work:

- Head cover gasket
- Head cover washers
- Rubber seals

Can get these all from Honda for $98.

If you have all the other tools - ther rest is priceless ;)

You had to take out the airbox to adjust the valves?

Been a long time since I had an OEM airbox but I don't remember removing it to work on the valve train.

As for engine mounts, it ain't where you buy them, it's who makes them that counts.

Did it so I could access the crankshaft.

Megan Racing is reasonably well respected in the US. I'm not personally familiar with these but shouldn't be hard to find reviews on S2ki.

Dude I had the same problem, Most likely to be oil (i know every1 said same thing) but the vtec runs of oil pressure (why the S didnt come with a oil press gauge i dont know!!) i was driving and had very laggy vtec and when i pulled to a stop i would hear tick tick i went and did a full service and only dropped 550ml of oil from the motor!.

I was talking to a shop who does engine rebuilds nd he told me that f20c i one of the best 2lt motors out but he did say that the AP1 f20c makes more power but drinks oil compared to the ap2 f20c. he said it was cause of the sleaving they use in the block -

hope this helps and check your oil.

oil and filter = $80 or there bouts
Rebuild = $2000+ depending on who you know.

Your motor should make a 'vroom vroom' sound.

Seriously, you should check/adjust the valves every 10K but very few do. If it making some noise, check 'em. If it's not making any unusual noise and you have a spare couple of hours and feel like getting greasy it can't hurt.

I've still got this noise - but not as bad as what it was before I did the valve adj. I most likely think it is the TCT, which is the next thing on my list so I'll let u kno once its done ;)

They would certainly do it and if it's the TCT, change that too.

Oh, and StevHarr had a ticking from the lower engine too. Turned out the be a dud bearing in the A/C compressor.

You can eliminate that by running the engine for a few seconds without the accessories belt.

s2kjn

Yeah I eliminated that just as u described Aus. I hope its the TCT. I just ordered one from CFL.

Hi guys, I got the TCT installed over the weekend. Ticking noise is still there. My mechanic reckons it could be the injectors. Any advice??

Sure. Use 14mm spanner on belt tensioner and apply pressure. Remove belt. Start engine.

Only run it for a short time (a few seconds should be enough to know if the sound is still there) as you won't be turning your alternator or water pump.
