Hi,

I searched, but didn't get a definate answer for my particular question. What would be the most suitable tire size for my staggered setup with the listed specs:

17X8 +45 Front - Was thinking 235/45/17
17X9 +45 Rear - Was thinking 245/40/17

I just need a straight definitive answer so I can order them. I'm a noob with tires...

P.S. Thanks vyets.

Peace.

depends on what you want. the standard size for that setup is

225/45 and 255/40

you will need to roll your guards, 245 depending on tyre brand sidewall you can get away without rolling.

should just pm me instead of creating a thread if you knew I was gonna answer :P

Hrmm.. Alright I guess I'll go for those sizes.

Might go for Kuhmo KU36's or Hankook Ventus, general street tyres will rock my boat enough.

I'll keep PM in mind next time, didn't even think of it! Thanks though! lol

Yea creating alot of topics makes it harder to search :P

Np mate, you could also still run 235 fronts if you like get abit more front grip and better braking

Also I would recommend you roll your front guards they will clear but if you lower your car you might clip your fenders going up a driveway or something and pull it out.

Yeah I might just get all fours rolled, my car is pretty low I think... Just 12cm all round I think on stockies..

I used to run 235 on my 8" wheel on my old car, so i might just do that.. So the verdict is:

235/45/17
255/40/17

Yay or Nay?

Thanks man. My rear is rubbing a bit, how much of the tab should i be getting rid of? It's already been relocated previously as suspected, but still rubs on bumps atm... I cut to original tab off on the biggest angle so it doesn't touch the rubberz... Stretched tyres would fix this? What's best sizes to stretch over these babies? :D

Trim more of the rear bar don't waste your money on buying new tyres.

Should look like this

Oh okay, I guess I'll just doctor more out.. I was worried that the bumper would get flimsy otherwise... But if everyone else is doing it, I'm jumping in the band wagon.

Cheers vyet!

zhong just to let you know - there's a thousand and one things you can know about tyres... BUT

to help break it down (and please gimme a +1 for this - i need it!)

you went with a 255/40R17 on your rear wheel...

the three "sections" of that tyre size mean:

255 = the tyre is 255mm wide.... 255mm is exactly 10 inches wide - so that's why it's "255"

the "profile" or the "40" bit... means that the sidewall profile depth, is 40% of the width of the tyre..

so the sidewall is 40% of 255mm

100mm in your case...

the R means Radial

and the 17 means ... for a 17 inch wheel

...why the measurements go from metric to imperial in the one sentence, i have no idea... some things man are just not meant to know... like how magnets work.

so in short, you have a 255mm wide tyre with 40% sidewall... for a 17 inch wheel..

...if you want stretch.. (which i think you should do) i suggest a 225 45.. it will mean you won't have to shave / roll / bend / trim your guards..

i mean really - why get out the grinder and start butchering things unless you have to?

^^^ I don't really know why your telling me this.. I'm sorry if I pissed you off with my use of metric and imperial in the same sentence.

My bumpers were already butchered/relocated - my tyres are already on, and already purchased it, it's not rubbing constantly, it's only rubbing on hard bumps.

Thanks for the explanation though, I'm sure someone will make good use of it. :)

Peace out H-Town.

haha im TRYING over here!!!! :p

okay if that's the case, bit of camber on rears?? :S looking at your car i can't imagine why it's rubbing... it shouldn't be!

and no i wasn't having a go about you using imperial and metric ... i was saying it's weird that when saying a tyre size... it talks about two different systems of measurement... neeeeeverminddddd

hang on im a bit lost. im in the same boat as you zhong. I got a set of 17x8 40 and 17x9 42 rims. do i go 225/45r17 front or 235/45r17? i think the rear is ok at 255?

vyets
05-02-2011, 10:26 AM
Why stretch on a 225 on a 9" rim when ur stock wheels are 225. Its not butchering ur guards if u do it correctly not to mention stretch tyres on a wheel thats already sunken looks like shit.

greek_rambos2k
05-02-2011, 05:14 PM
no no i meant 225 or 235 on the 8" rim? the 9" im going to put 255.

vyets
05-02-2011, 05:53 PM
I was talkin about mr rps greek

You can run 225 which will be square and 235's are slightly more bubbly

i don't really get what you're asking me sorry..

...are you asking what's the point of stretching tyres???

=/

i don't wanna make a fool of myself explaining why you do it if you already know... sorry!

please be more specific what you mean? :)

Here's another I took over the weekend. Didn't get a chance to wash so I didn't really take many photos, but you get the idea!

http://www.wheel-junction.com.au/upload/yooo.jpg

I got it from the states.. Paid a bit for them, since SBC were a limited production set. I'm planning to get spacers for the front, just to fill it out evenly, as atm it looks as if it's inside the guard due to the tyre/height. Correct me if I'm wrong vyets haha. Or better yet, let me know what I should do to make it "fit" better.

garett
12-02-2011, 05:21 PM
yeh i was talking about the J's racing nuts being pricey too.

def got a good deal on the tyres. what suspension plans do you have for it? when you put those rims on it you are desperately going to need to lower it. if anything makes it look even more jacked up its a set of awesome wheels.
