Ok, so I know I am probably going a bit far in regards to saving weight here, But I was thinking, since I have a CF hood and am using AEROlatches and pins eg these:

http://www.jhpusa.com/store/pc/catalog/aerocatch/aerocatch.flush_d.jpg

Do I still need the OEM hood latch assembly and pull cord etc? This is a track only car btw.

Also, in regards to the trunk. Would using something like these rubber latches be worth it. these would obviously replace the metal lock/latch assembly and pull cord etc might save a tiny a bit of weight i reckon.

or

I'm thinking of doing both to the EM1.

with the first pik, the slim lined ones, u dont need a hood latch release mechanism, one of my mates has it on his pulsar sss, from what i remember, he just unclipped it all, an just lifted it up with ease

as far as weight loss, nill lol

now ur getting really technical about weight saving LOL

hehe enough to bring you into the 36's Mike :)

Difference is negligible. You could remove your dashboard and keep your gauges and cluster though..now that would be awesome!

When's next day at Winton? I'm keen as mustard!

Do it! My brother has removed the stock latch and cable from his track car and never had a problem with scrutineering or anything of that nature. Might be worth weighing the rear latch etc though because I can't imagine that it is very heavy so the weight savings might be negligible.

Just stand back and look at your car and anything that doesn't look too important pull/cut it off :).

While I was overseas, I visited the car tuning strip in one of the countries. Amongst the shops was a Honda Specialist with a few track spec cars out the front. One of the cars was an EK9 with a latch assembly similar to the 3 pic. It looked like a spring style release/catch. Everything was pretty much stripped and caged too.

Ive got the Aero latches on my CF bonnet, if your car is street registered and driven on the road then I would recommend to keep the oem latch release on.

2 reasons, 1 the bonnet will have better closure, and look better than having a gap between your bonnet and front bar... and 2 if your pins should fail for some reason i would rather have the latch to save the bonnet making contact with your windscreen and doing damage... ive seen this happen on a number of cars and its not pretty.

BTW get the Aero..... they are the business!

Im assuming u have aircon removed..? How about chopping the A/C bracket in half since its not being used to hold the compressor anymore. Thats an EASY 2+ kilos... or just remove the bracket alltogether, both sides where the torque mounts sit... they do bugger all anyway, especially if u r using racing engine mounts anyway. They r heavy c*nts!

DNYALL
10-02-2011, 01:56 PM
Yeah, I will look at that actually. I still have that mount on there. I'll suss out if I can remove it or not. I'm also going to remove the headliner and all the unnecessary bits out of the dash, eg. heater boxes/aircon boxes etc plenty of things I can do.

since you are in the progress of building a track car, might be cool to look into getting sponsors for superlap.
just food for thought.

There's a place in Carlton (Melbourne) called Acrylic Industries, I'm sure they've done that kind of product in the past. Might be worth a try.

Man, that would be awesome, but I wouldn't know the first place to start in regards to getting sponsors.

yeah they got for EM1, just wondering if u would consider doin a small group buy to save on postage.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PHP-8-08227-32/

this is a link to the EM1 window, theres other types of thicknesses and coatings but ive choosen to go with this 1 cos its a bit thicker but has no hard coating, prices vary on what you want.

Yep, keen, let me know when your going to order and I'll put in for it as well. Should be able to get the set over for under $500 you would hope. I checked it out and that styl of window should be sweet. not sure if I want the front windscreen though. pretty sure i remember reading somewhere that for 'superlap' front windshield has to be standard, not lexen etc.Pretty sure anyway.

But if you have to get the kit with the front windshield included so be it.

Let me know when you want to order, remember, I will need the 1999-2000 civic coupe SI kit.

I'd keep the stock bonnet latch. Depending on the race category, you may need a secondary restraint for the bonnet. And besides, you'd lose more weight chucking a dump :)

You dont need stock latch if you have 2 bonnet pins.

Remove em all!!

for the weight saving vs safety and ease of use - id keep the oem bonnet latch if possible !

Heres another weight saving tip - (on a d or b series in a EK/DC/EG) use stiff mounts such as hasports / innovative etc. 2 side and rear mount. You can now remove the FRONT gearbox and aircon brackets + mounts ( significant weight saving of a few ks and cleans up ur engine bay )

I'm with fatboy - if its a full track car, remove the latch..
However, if you still use the car on the street, then as ben says - keep the latch

My contribution, less soft drinks and go running every night..

Yeah I was thinking about removing those two mounts. I am running HASPORT mounts on both sides and the rear so should be right

As for the latches, I reckon I will remove them when I have time. Just makes it a lot easier to open the bonnet when needed. don't have to get out to pop the latches then go back to the car to pop the bonnet. tiny weight saving is jut a bonus. A friend of mine at work drives rally cars and he said that on their car they removed the locking mechanism in the latch but kept the hand latch and hook there for safety. So once they pop the pins the bonnet then automatically go's to the secondary hook, which you just lift with your hands. Sounded smart to me, but not sure if you can do it on the Honda. Haven't actually sussed it out to be honest. no time...

hey mike with my aerocatch hood pins i can pull the bonnet latch in the car then go out and unlock the hood pins and open the bonnet. No need to undo hood pins first.

DNYALL
19-02-2011, 05:28 PM
Yeah I have accidentally done that a few times when i first put the pins in, makes it too tight on the pins to open them.
