Alright I've been on Ozhonda for ages and I bought this EK1 Gli last year for $6k and i decided i might as well do a build thread to share what ive done and to show how I want to go about doing things to my car and so people can give me some much needed advice along the way =D

here are a few photos of the car as it appeared on carsales:

i used to love the clarendon road in my teg and 180 but ive been using lofty as late! good to see you have taste in those roads. i bet youd fly through in the ED

Yea, the coilovers, decent tyres and great brakes make it great fun. the downside is my front tyres have a lifespan of 8000km lol.

ill see if i can stick the shift boot in today and take some quick snaps, shes not clean coz of the rain last night but its australia day so i cant really be bothered washing it. if im lucky i might even have time to fit the rear lip which i think needs to be cut to fit coz the exhaust guy put the muffler and tip up too high :(

bambi
26-01-2011, 03:27 PM
yeah the exhaust is too high, im gonna have to pay someone to move it down half an inch to fit the lip. not happy

mooshie
26-01-2011, 08:57 PM
Surely you can just bend some of the exhaust supports or get some hangers which hold it down lower. for gods sake don't pay someone to do that for you!

ok i finally have new photos =D

i cleaned it today and took some photos at arndale shopping centre up the top, and i went and got a photo of the seats i will probably be putting in the car too!

Here's the car as it is now:

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee380/ekbambi/new6.jpg

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee380/ekbambi/new5.jpg

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee380/ekbambi/new3.jpg

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee380/ekbambi/new2.jpg

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee380/ekbambi/new1.jpg

And of Course the Skunk2 shift knob and genuine CTR shift boot:

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee380/ekbambi/shifter.jpg

And here are the S2000 seats i will probably be purchasing from a mate at work:

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee380/ekbambi/seats.jpg

and mooshie do you mean bending the metal rods that hold the exhaust up? i had a look and that wont increase the reach at all, if i knew how to weld i could cut the mounts off the muffler and then weld them back on further down but unfortunately i dont have any experience in that. i might just go back to the guy who did the exhaust and ask him to do it and say im not happy with his work coz i told him to keep it low and see if hell do it for free or really cheap.

so once thats down i can put the rear lip on, me and dad trial fit it a couple of weeks ago and it looks mint! once theyre on i have a mate who does spray painting so hell take the grill and lip kit and side skirts and paint them up for me =D

I'll look out for this car around A-Town.

In regards to brakes, i wouldn't bother with Bendix Ultimate, they r useless and extremely dusty. If ur after a budget option look into QFM, good value for money. I have used em at the track and they hold up pretty well, especially at they price they are, although they have gone up a bit recently. 282mm re-drilled prelude brakes + DC2R calipers are they way to go mate and huge improvement in the braking department at a reasonable price.

When i first got into cars i just slapped on whatever i could afford at the time, didnt have any patience or do enough research. When it comes to suspension components i would suggest waiting and saving so u do it right the 1st time. There are budget options, but its hard to compete with coilovers so perhaps its a good idea to even look for a 2nd hand set as u can get decent ones for around the $1000 mark. Maybe thats the best way to go.

Best of luck, I'm pretty keen to c how u go with this build n i'll keep an eye out for the beast :)

i was thinking of the DC2R brakes but to do that i have to change a lot of stuff apparently because they supposedly wont bolt up. i figure the slotted rotors up front and any pads should be fine, theyve just had issues with heat before so any pads will probably do the trick so even if i get GCT or heavy duty bendix or ferodo even they should do the job, the car isnt too heavy and its not that fast either haha

im still undecided on coilovers, everyone i know with them say theyre too stiff for your daily so ill wait and see what pops up and what price etc. KYB excel G's have done enough for me in the past but i dont really know how long they last so im just afraid theyll die after 18 months or something and take me back to here.

Im running Hawk blue race pads with standard ED6 rotors ( was running slotted DBAs - SO much better) they work a treat. as far as brake fade is concerned i can drive hard from clarendon to blackwood and only just have them cooking by the end. I also run Motul brake fluid which does help ALOT. I ran castrol super dot 4 ( silver bottle ) for about a month a few years back and it lasted about 2 minutes before it was boiling.

Coilovers, as everyone says, are great value for money BUT i think they are a bit extreme on shitty adelaide roads. Driving up Greenhill road towards Mt Lofty with the coilovers is a bit bumpy, the rear always bounces around. Each to their own i guess. I can tolerate the bumpyness most of the time. Driving to Melbourne wasn't great fun though.

so the slotteds are worth it then? ill get a price on them tomorrow at work, its annoying coz all the listings are for american trim selections so im not sure exactly which model the gli converts to in american, if all else fails i can just measure them and check it that way. i know i need new rear shocks coz my springs in the back have annihilated the shocks and theyre making noise so i might just find some monroes or kybs for the time being to get me through with some sense of sanity

Tegzieboi_BAR
11-02-2011, 04:48 PM
haha yeah, i run Tein-SS which are a softer option compared to most others n can still get a bit bumpy at times, but i also take the car to the track and they r way too soft for that.

Changing to ITR brakes really isnt that hard. I assume u have disks allround already (Gli) u can pick up a set of front ITR calipers for $200ish... need slight machining and will bolt right up to stock hubs. Re-drilled (prelude) 282mm rotors and an EK4/DC2/(or ideally) DC2R brake master cyl and booster and ur set... breaking will be amazing compared to just changing pads n slotted rotors.

All depends on what ur pans with the car are, no point doing all that if u dont frequent the hills often and have no intention of tracking the car.

bambi
11-02-2011, 06:57 PM
yeah i dont have the budget for track use nor do i want to use my daily on the track where it may get a bit battered from the abuse, its really just the occasional hills run so im not going too intense in any area really, obviously just trying to make it comfy, make it look good and improve everything in the performance realms from standard just to have a better car for now. if i happen to get rich *touch wood* i will probably put a b18c7 in it and go the 5 stud brake conversion from a type r to make it worth while =D

why go for 5 stud? im just curious as to why spend extra when theres plenty of rim selection for 4 studs, i think its a pretty pointless conversion unless u got some really good rims to back it up, an by that, rims u cant find to suit 4 studs....

not a fan of s2k seats in other cars, just looks wired lol... maybe cause of the shape of the headrest? :S

its looking good, my opinion, stick to the 4 stud, use that 1k, an put it towards more useful mods, that actually make a difference

Totally agree on this one.. The 4 stud rim selection is heavy and let alone cheaper in most cases.

I used to own 5 stud cars and wheels were always looking awkward or just to ugly to suit lol

S2k seats they look alright in a civic but when you see it from behind it does seem weird/different

Gl on the build!!

16-02-2011, 06:35 PM
hey thanks for the support guys!

yeah i wouldnt be surprised if they look weird from behind (s2000 seats) but its the comfort i bought them for, they were a great deal for what they are

yeah i ordered slotted rotrs for my front and some new rears coz i needed them anyway since they were undersized for machining. i reckon ill save a little extra money and put it into handling and getting some of the dents out so i can show the car off a bit more! if i manage to get rich you never know i might try find a b16 for myself =D

finally did my brakes and got a photo of rear sway bar and extractors!!

Just got RDA rotors on rear and RDA slotted rotors on front, for anyone wondering part numbers are 474 and 475

got some qfm brake pads on the front and had some genuine honda ones to go in the rear

made a decent amount of difference :)

I'm going 5 stud for two reasons, to upgrade to bigger brakes and also want gunmetal grey dc2r rims on cause i think they'll look nice.

Ur white line sway bar, iev been meaning to buy the bracing kit an brackets as ive got the swaybar itself but no bracing kit, but too lazy, how does it feel?

bambi
21-02-2011, 08:21 PM
sway bar feels good man, its a lot tighter in the rear end, feels a lot more composed especially combined with the strut brace ive got in there as well

cant you get imitations of the dc2 rims? if your a cheap ass that is :P haha

hey guys i got a better photo of my front rotors with the lensos back on (and clean for once)

and i photo of my 3 point front strut brace from Ultra-Racing

for anyone who wonders if strut braces do anything i did notice a different in the suspension characteristics through turns. when i went over a bump with the other wheel which normally would cause severe understeer, i found the car pushed back further into the corner, so thats a win in bang for your buck modifications!

stay honda!!

i literally got my wisdom teeth out on friday so im physically out of action haha

i reckon ill get the exhaust lowered so i can fit the rear lip, and ill figure out how to mount my seats in.

just shopping for a CAI at the moment. anyone bought a good one they would recommend?

and the last visual mod i wanna do (ignoring the dents i needa get repaired) is the ek9 wing so i just need to find one paint and fit it :D

Tegzieboi_BAR
10-03-2011, 01:50 PM
for CAI i suggest going to an exhaust shop and getting a custom one made up to ur specs... will be cheaper and if u do it right, more effective than most CAI systems out there, unless ur spending the big bucks.

bambi
10-03-2011, 02:30 PM
i was prepared to go for a k&N or an injen intake which i can get off ebay for less than $400 for a CAI delivered. how would these compare to a custom?

Tegzieboi_BAR
10-03-2011, 02:42 PM
Injen intake would be a good option but they r pretty pricey. U can get a K&N filter to suit for around $100 or cheaper so id say if u can get a Stainless Steel 2.5" pipe made up to the design u want, even copy Injen's design... if that costs under $200 which im sure it will, id opt for that option.

I plan on doing this to my EG track car in the future as i can get a bigger diameter pipe, slotted to sit right behind the fog-light slot for plenty of fresh air, and it'll cost me peanuts compared to getting an Injen, which i think is a bit narrow for my application anyway.

Go see Peter at Carline Mufflers on Grange Rd, he's the man n will look after u. Only thing id say, the CAI or SRI wont make all that much difference on ur motor, if ur just after a bit of Grrrunt u can get that from any eBay $50 SRI kit.

bambi
10-03-2011, 03:10 PM
well as a matter of interest then would this kit make a noticeable difference? its a no brand CAI

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370478384085&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

where abouts are you located in adelaide? i wanna see this eg sometime!

Tegzieboi_BAR
10-03-2011, 03:59 PM
Yeah if i were you i would just get that, pretty damn cheap n looks ok. It would be a matter of about 0.5hp between a CAI and SRI with a D16 anyway. U can always make up a custom box for it to keep the heat away or lead an a/c pipe or something to provide it with some cool air. In my old car i actually used a standard DC2R intake box but replaced the filter with Spoon and cut a 10cm round hole in the bottom n fed a 10cm a/c pipe to it, basically the Mugen design, but about $900 cheaper and no cop would ever pick on it.

Ohh my project has barely even started mate, just collecting a few more parts at the moment. Its pretty much just a matter of getting a new car so the EG can be taken off the road for a while to get the motor install, strip n cage etc. dont worry u'll see this thing at Mallala by the end of the year. Im based down South, but my car isnt the Honda in SA to look out for, theres a few real beasts being built at the moment ;) most guys here like to keep it on the low haha

bambi
10-03-2011, 07:42 PM
i was considering the cut option coz my airbox is the same as an ek9 by the looks of it but i have so many resonators itll kill the noise :P

i love seeing a track honda and i look forward to seeing it man! id love to get an eg and give it a roll cage and take part in some rallying, i reckon itd be great fun

Tegzieboi_BAR

Yea my mate is building an eg6 rally car, very impress so far n it's still very far from finished. With the resonators under the box, just remove em n leave the top section. It's actually a good way to go about it on a street car.

oh the resonators underneath are easy to take off but theres a couple hanging from the intake pipe that dont need to be there but you cant take them off so i would prefer a cai to clean all that up

bad news, today i was at a khanacross (spectating) and i went to reverse out of my park and tore the front lip of my car, it broke into 3 pieces, im not entirely unhappy with the situation, to be honest i wana ready to get rid of it for an ek9 style one since i think they look a lot cleaner. ill order one from JDMyard asap and stick it on to repair the looks of my beautiful daily driven baby!

if anyone wants a mugen style front lip in 3 pieces, let me know its going cheap! haha

All your choice op! My car came with fake and I hate it lol! Need genuine badly but with the seats if you like the recaros they are worth saving for but s2k seats are nice also and as you said they are different man

how much is the em1 lip approxmiately? i work at a honda dealer so i should ask spare parts tomorrow if they can get me one if its affordable. having said that the type r one is $600 delivered so im willing to bet its not a lot cheaper :/

at least you had a short ram on the car to get you started! lol
i got the guys at work to look up a genuine lip and it was less than $150 from japan :S that hurts that i just spent so much on a fake. for a heads up for any ek builders out there who want an em1 lip on a facelift model-
THEY ARE AVAILABLE!! CALL HONDA AND ORDER ONE IN, WORTH THE MONEY, COZ THEYRE CHEAP AS! well for me probably more around $200 for normal customers but thats still awesome for the fit quiality...

let me know about that wing i dont wanna fork out $400 for a real one but then i dont wanna pay $350 and have to spend another $150 and hours of my time making it fit for a replica lol

get the VHT silver caliper paint for a VERY clean look.

just did it to my red dc2r and the brakes look more aggresive now, compared to the previously painted red.

but make sure you dont paint over the brake pads, otherwise it;ll just look stupid. proper prep = proper finish.
