I have a 1990 civic GL i think its codename is EG4???? but the thing is its D15b4 has died, so i need to get a new engine. I was thinking since i have to replace the engine i moas well replace it with a more powerful one.

So after reading through that very detailed guide if i was to buy just the B16a2 engine, i would also need to source. Hasport B16 engine mounts hydrolic, new CV joint axels for a B16? a new gearbox which is from a hydrolic model (or is there a way to convert my current one?) new gear linkage, a ODB1 ecu? (is that the wire loom box thing?) a fuel tank from a EFI and the fuel rails. And then it is recomended to get some rear diskbrakes from a JDM model is it?

So is that everything i need or am i missing stuff id need for the conversion?

Thank you so much,

Nic

you sure you have an EG? 1990 model civics were EDs.

to be honest its more trouble than its worth given your car is carby. Replace the engine with the same motor, sell it and buy a different EG. Unless you can do all of the work yourself its going to cost you extra to get it converted to EFI.

I've seen B16A EGs go for chips on here in the last few months.

Yer ED sounds right im still trying to learn all the codes, i will be doing all the work myself with some mates, and ive received the car as a project, hoping to make it live again.

If you have an ED try find an EF B16A half cut. Will be an easier swap but harder to find given their age.

so by going this way i will be able to stick with the cable gearbox, is that the only advantage? apart from the half cut itself

gearbox and wiring will be easier as the dash loom will be the same/similar to the ED. Plugs between EG and ED are different

I believe you can also use the EF powersteering pump in an ED. Not the case with EG B16A

ah ok, guess i should keep my eyes out, atm a local motor import place has a D15b4, which is identical to what died in the car, and then they also have a b16a2.

Go B16A2. If you can't do it yourself, find somebody who can do it for you. It'll be a lot of fun when it's finished trust me :)

I wouldn't recommend only buying a motor, trying to find all the bits and pieces will be a bitch. Also don't buy a D15B4 from a wreckers, massively overpriced. Will find cheaper on here. I sold my old motor for $50

ah k i was looking at brisbane motor imports, they have a D15b4 for $650, i assume its either a low K jap import or been reconditioned, i sent them an e-mail to find out though.

I'm pretty sure the JDM D15 (cool motor) is just stamped as 'D15B' with no number after it.

Still too much money though. You'd be better off getting a D16Y1 at that price.

that is a good point so it would be an australian one then

yep it would

so mark, what swayed your decision to go upgrade to a d16 over a b16? im guessing it would have been similar work/costs involved

work involved almost, cost not a chance in hell.

I picked up my EH wreck for an absolute awesome price, my ED project was more about the process than the motor going into it

thats awesome, im also in it to just have a go and learn how to do an engine swap.

How much does the ED weight anyhow? D16Y1 would pull nicely me thinks...

982kgs acording to wiki, with the engine swap i can swap into a australian factory option without haveing to get a mod plate. The engine mark put in didnt need one, so my question is for example do i have to but the D16** in that matches the numbers of the australian release one or can i put in any D16 engine so a D16a8 or a D16y1 and it wouldnt matter?

Depends on where you live

Then you'll have to check the laws there through the Department of Transport body or whatever. Different states have different laws.

I think in NSW you can change an engine to within 15% increased capacity?
VIC the engine needs to be a standard option for the AUDM model of the car, or otherwise engineered.

etc

B16a swap is not difficult at all aslong as you have all the right parts.. Ef8/9 halfcut, hasport cable mounts and crx fuel tank with pump will be everything you need.

a manual ED hatch weighs 900kg ----> reference below

the only Australian engine option was the carby D15B4 for the ED, so nothing else is relevant. I contacted QLD transport in regard to whether or not I needed a mod plate. The woman asked me what capacity the motor was and whether any modifications to the standard engine/gearbox mounting points were required. I said no, its still a civic motor just out of a newer model. I was told I did not need a mod plate, just fill out this form:

http://www.support.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/formsdat.nsf/forms/QF3524/$file/F3524_ES.pdf

to change the engine number

so you didnt need to change the engine mounting points with the D16 like you would with the B16?

you use the mounts off the D15B4. that's all you need to change to mount the D16Y1
