The owners before me had 2 Pioneer speakers installed in the back of my car and an amp loosely on the floor in the boot which they removed when I purchased it (didn't look very safe). So where do I start when looking to set up a good sound system? Nothing too flashy or show off wise more just something I'm going to be happy/impressed with. Or is it pretty much just add a new amp/sub?

IMO a good set of splits and amp combination would do fine, well thats just me, im not a sub kind of guy :P

Splits? I'm wary of subs too - don't want some random box sitting in my boot haha, might consider the 'tube/cylinder' subs though

Gotcha :D Would that make a big difference as opposed to stock?

pretty much anything aftermarket is better than stock. spilts are 6" speakers with a separate tweeter which does the high pitch sounds. i have a set of kicker DS600.2 splits got them from JB hifi which is where i now work.

I think Autobarn actually install them for you (mentions something like that) and I have one around the corner from me. Anything I should look out for going in and buying new speakers? (Plus maybe a head unit, USB would be nice - current Kenwood doesn't have one)

correct autobarn and jb hifi both do installs, yea man a newer headunit would also improve sound, if you have an ipod/iphone and want to use that get a headunit which is ipod/iphone compatible, just makes it easier as you can control your ipod from the headunit :)

So when would an amplifier come into play, at what point do people need those?

do yourself a favour & pop into 'FHRX studios'. google em.

to save a little time before you do, i guess you should think about your criteria & restrictions, ie. budget, installation limitations, what you want out of it (Hu with usb), etc.

the only point in time when you absolutely need an amp is when you get a sub. but saying that you can get one just to hook up your speaker so you get the full potential out of them, making them louder
