I know this is a topic that has been covered countless times, as i'm a noob with my first car, but i'd like to hear your opinions on what setup (sizing, style etc) i should go for in my EK1 CXI.
I'm thinking of going down the custom road as brand name stuff tends to cost alot.

Or u can go ebay lol, again, this is a miss hit, some ebay ones sound just as good as branded ones, than others just sound like a rattle can....
Go with 2.25 for size wise, 2.5 is a bit to big, an sounds to loud, 2.25 is pretty much spot on for these engines
With the Mid pipe (b-pipe_) if ur going with custom, if they ask for a resonator/hotdog, get one, its kills off most of the drone thats associated with exhaust, than get a quality muffler, oval shapes are the go for quite sound, if not a twin loop muffler

2inch is better non vtec motor.. 2.25 too big wont creat enough back pressure.. If he plans on upgrading the motor I would suggest 2.25 for b16a/b18c non typre R and 2.5 for b18c7.. b20vtec 2.5/3inch. k20 2.5, k24 3inch

What are twin loops like?

How expensive are xforce, i've heard of them and they seem alright? Don't mind some of the styles either.
Not sure about cannons, they would look rather stupid on my car?

Little off topic.
I've heard that press-bends are fine as long as they're no greater than 90 degrees. Is this true or is mandrel really far-superior?

in theory yes, mandrel will always be better, but for a daily, press bent should be fine.. On the track its a different story when the car is at constant WOT and ur chasing for the best power band, having a mandrel bent means the path of flow of gasses is always the smoothest and the gasses can escape the quickest with zero restrictions as opposed to a cheap pressed bent system with wrinkly bends lol... Iev got a mandrel bend system, makes zero difference as a daily, besides sound, but on the track again, its a big difference

OP imo its only a Cxi and you not going to get much gains or if any at all from it.
if your just wanting to get a good sound out of it, get a straight through Oval muffler in the rear with a larger tip. it will make your exhaust note a little louder with out getting the raspy sound.

I'm not really fussed about power gains as it's only my daily. My friend has a corolla with a custom exhaust (I think it's an oval muffler) with a nice oval tip, it puts out a really nice growl at low revs and gets decently loud as it revs up through the gears. What I'm after is similar to this, not something that's going to scream through town and piss everyone off, not sure whether to look at a cannon or not...

for that sorta description, definite get a oval muffler, cannons often emit a higher and louder note, a good system to look at is the Apexi WS2 as a reference... And i stress "reference" as the price of that system is gonna be outta ur budget, around the 800-900 with shipping (cat back system)
A xforce twin loop is the next best thing if ur after quietness with out breaking the bank... for a pre fab system, if ur not a fan of twin loop looks like me, definite go custom with a oval muffler

lol wow 800 for apexi WS2 far out didnt know they were that much.
im my my i just have a generic mild steel painted black for stealth works fine for my boosted appliction and only cost me $100

Think i might give Berklee or Carline a ring for a quote if i was to get a custom.
How expensive would an xforce system be?

Still seems too much out of my budget.
Think i might go with a custom system (2.25 or 2.5) oval muffler with a nice oval tip.

O/P your not running a b16a are you? Seriously theres no need to 2.5 or 2.25. i just remember the old system that was on my car was a 2inch when i was running my old d16y8. it ran fine not only that it was press bent.

Go 2" for D16 standard internals, certainly no bigger dude. Mild steel, mandrel bent if you can afford it but press bends are fine.

is it worth getting a resonator?

resonator is a must, on all road vehicles, it makes a big differace...
Get the ebay N power headers, best bang for buck headers for all d-series, u b crazy not to get em, and for the price its a steal! 100% fitment and clears the fans easily as well as ground clearance
Cat, no need, its big enough, im running cat back an headers, i thought about high flow cat, no need atm, unless ur boosting standard cat is fine imho

Next time i gotta meet u, at the last meet i didnt see ur car, or i mite of missed it/you LOL
And also OP, ur best options are either find a 2nd hand system, or go custom, custom cat back shouldnt set u back no more than 500, give or take...

Yeah bro we'll tee it up beforehand.
@OP: My mate got the N*Power header for $140 (?) delivered, an ebay high-flow cat for like $150, and I think they made a 2" mild steel press bent exhaust + installed the header/cat for another $250 or so. This included the option of a resonator. He already had a twin loop muffler. So all up it should be $600 or so max.

Sweet, these N* Power headers sound like great quality for the price.
Think i might get them (not sure about cat) and a custom exhaust setup from berklee exhausts

The evidence supports the use of a high-flow cat converter if you want more power. I don't understand why you would upgrade every single piece of your exhaust, except for the most restrictive part right in the middle.
