Has anyone seen a clear difference in performance or petrol consumption when using 98 unleaded instead of 95 unleaded?

To me car runs the most smooth when using either caltex vortex (95 or 98) or Bp ultimate 98.

I economy wise difference is minimal

furythree

yep i see no economy benefits
i always use vortex, if ur feeling wealthy then get 98 otherwise 95 is fine

FYI ive been getting 700+ km range per refuel lately. my fuel economy has been increased for some reason and only use 95. so there we go

Just 95. Bp 98 is 20c/L more expensive than 95 up here lol! Rip off c***s

Having tried both there is no noticeable difference in performance or economy. I don't know what furythree is doing wrong (700km per tank) try 900+ per tank.

lol

city driving, start and stop traffic mate

and i get so goddamn bored stopping every 200m, that basically since im going to be red lighted anyway, might as well make sure im first in line so i can absolutely floor it to the next light.
not very good for fuel consumption (have seen it go up to 12.5L/100km doing that) but beats the life out of moving at 10kms/h!

Baited the hook & caught a big 1 .... lol. Just having a go at you mate. I have seen mine go as low as 5.8 indicated on a flat road, cruise set at 90, but I can't drive that way for long....When you consider that Honda advertise 12.3 for city cycle & 6.9 country cycle your doing ok.

maybe slightly better economy with 98 but perhaps not worth the extra cost.... engine seems to run better with 98... i get a ticking sound from the engine bay when i use 95 but not when i use 98... but again... not sure if the extra cost is worth it...

remember caltex advertise that their vortex fuels clean
and since 95 is a vortex fuel, i assume it cleans as does the 98
otherwise its false advertising
and i think 98 just helps pinging, which doesnt really matter anymore

all i know is dont touch that ethanol stuff
my uncle's puegot just got fixed for $400 because he kept getting a "depollution error" found out it was mainly due to using ethanol instead of 95 ron. but no reason to go 98
taught him a lesson thats for sure

Pretty much the same with me, as 'biggame' said above, noticable difference in engine smoothness and power....and the wallet:-) but not much gain in mileage. I get a consistent 750km +- per tank. maybe 765km with 98. fill at either BP or Mobil

As far as I know vortex 95 and 98 have different amount of cleaning agents/additives etc and they market it as such. Caltex always marketed 98 been better cleaning than the 95

When i bought my car brand new i think it came with 95, after that i always use BP ultimate 98. Mine is My10 Jan 2010 built Euro, that may be a reason i don't hear any ping at all

After my VW Jetta, the fuel consumption has been a bit of a disapointment in my Euro.....

Doesn't anyone here use Shell V-Power? I'm sure it's a 98 RON and I get pretty good power and around 750 k's out of a tank city driving (50% of the time on freeways, although the Monash could be considered a car park).

I've been getting 6.4-8.2lt/100km really depending on how i drive...the 8.2 was during peakhour back and forth from uni and the 6.4 was my cruising speed to the st albans via the freeway

As a general rule of thumb, add around 0.4 to what your trip meter indicates to get a true figure.

I've not been looking at economy yet, but I filled my tank with Shell V-power yesterday after two tanks of Shell 95 - Instant improvement in performance - less standing start delay up a hill or on acceleration in 2nd gear. I'll be interested to know how performance changes again when my K&N air filter goes in (tomorrow?).

I hate the shell premium with a passion ever since thy replaced Optimax with Vpower. My euro simply don't like it. Sluggish at best, Probably have something to do with the fact it's refine overseas and shipped here... So it's not as "fresh" as locally refined fuel

Maybe the problem I've been having with sluggishness has less to do with the car and more to do with Shell 95!

Try vortex 95 then vortex 98... You should feel some difference

I'd love to get some of tho Vpower they sell at my local servo tested for octane rating... I swear they feel like 91 sometimes

I actually had the same experience when I switched to Shell V-power 95 in early 2010 for a bout 3 tanks. I've never heard the engine Ping as loud as it did then and it got progressively worse. Went back to BP 95, no ping. cant quite recall what the car felt like, guess I focusing on the very audible PING!!

yep I reckon the octane was below 95, ......developed with Ferrari, blah blah blah!!

Shell is poor quality fuel IMO, I wouldn't put that in my car. Maybe my lawn mower, but it will run rough.

Definitely use 98RON for better performance. I don't care about the economy that much. I always get over 700kms out of a tank city driving. I'm not much of a hoon though. And will be doing a 1400km trip in April, so will see how I go then on the highway, but I have had it in the low 6's L\100km on long trips. Trip computer reckons that it will do over 1000kms on a tank at 110km.

I always fill up on BP 98 and Caltex Vortex 98 is my second preference. I even had a Daewoo that ran crap on Shell, and it wasn't fuel sensitive.

Always use 98 ron, mainly Caltex
Getting good returns on the longer trips - 6.8 to 7.4's. 7.4 is usually at 110K++

Around town it sucks it (high 8's / low 9's.

I'll let the Shell 98 run low and replace it with Vortex 98. Let's see how it goes after that.

I own a CL9 but anyways thought i would throw in my input.

I use BP Ultimate 98 or Caltex 95 - 98. I use to use Mobile 98 but have presevations about it now being owned by 7/11 and all dont wont that fuel to touch my engine. I think Choice should do a comparison on all different types of fuel would make it alot easier to analyse and maybe increase the standard.

A little unknown fact Japan does not use anything less then 100ron in there cars

PhD Petrochemist's opinion is that no single additive to premium gasoline will do as good a job at removing deposits in your engine as changing the additive frequently (by swapping fuel brands).
