Hey Guys,
Just wondering what the usual price on replacement of a brake master cylinder (for a DC2) is? I've got a terrible feeling mine is on its way out - if my foot sinking to the floor under braking has anything to do with it!!
I've been quoted $300 from a Honda dealer and more than that from a few other places. Seems a bit rich to me - I had the clutch master replaced and I dont remember it being that much. I could probably to do it myself but it sounds a messy and time consuming.
Cheers
Mike

might need a bleed or soemthing?
look at the pedal and see if there is any fluid leaking on the inside where it goes into the engine bay... if there is - then the MC seals are gone,
but otherwise might just need a fresh set of fluid and bleed
$39 from Midas if you dont want to try it yourself ;)
(clutch MC is about 50 times less complicated than a brake master cylinder too!)

Thanks Tinkerbell,
I don't appear to be losing any fluid. The problem is intermittent (its fine at the moment) and is worsened by hot weather. I read another post here that said this was most definitely a MC, and the Honda service guy said the same (although of course they are going to diagnose the more expensive problem! ;) )
Funnily enough my gf's civic (same vintage as my teg) had exactly the same problem on the same day. Even weirder was the fact that my clutch MC went within a month or so of hers aswell. On closer look it probably makes sense that the units probably use the same seals - which perish at the same rate.

Hey Boost,
I got my clutch MC replaced at a Honda dealer a few months ago - think it was around $170. Pretty reasonable I thought (and I got a loaner for the day). In hindsight the price sounds more like a seal replacement ... but I'm almost 100% it was for replacing the whole MC.

if its $170... then its most likely a seal replacement that an entire new cylinder... thanks for the info.

the labour on replacing seals on a MC would be massive if you got Honda to do it, LOL!
if the price is an issue, get one from a wrecker, i have done this several times without incident...
a MC for DC2 from wrecker = $100ish

you probably dont need to change the master cylinder, just overhaul it. you can get an overhaul kit from honda for about $70. be just like a new one when your done. this heat brings out the Honda Master Cylinder Syndrome

try replacing ur brake fluid?? becos from what ur saying it seems that the rise in temperature of ur fluid is causing ur brake to be spongey! what colour is ur brake fluid? well the cheapest way to go for now is replace brake fluid and bleedassuming that ur not sure ur MC is gone or u could just bleed ur MC! but MC's shoudln't have toi be bleed again if they are bleed right from the start! but try somehondabrake fluid and give it a go! if u want help on bleeding give me a yell!!!

Iv had the same prob too when i first got my civic when i drove it on HOT days the brakes would jst sink to the floor it was a big shocker for me, since i was drivin far i was worried i might smash some1 . BUT anywayz few weeks down the track i got the whole cylinder replace by my dads friend i thought it was a rip tho jst for a master cylinder cost 160 and he took $50 labour fee i guess it was a hard job but it did look pretty simple to do....
