Hey guys,

I'm looking for my first car, so I was on carsales the other day, and I found a 1991 Honda civic GL, white, has sunroof, and condition looks pretty good from the photos.
BUT! It has done 220,000kms, and the price he's asking for is $3500 (it's a bit over priced imo). So I need some opinions on this.

Would 220,000 kms be too high? would you recommend me getting it? People have been telling me that Hondas are really reliable, but it's 20 years old and has already done 220,000kms, That's why I'm still thinking about it.

So guys, provide your opinions please :)

has it been regularly serviced with logbooks to prove?

I am not too sure about it at the moment, I'm still waiting for his reply.
But here is the link of the car.

Photos are almost always misleading, insist on log books but some dodgy people forge stuff. Try to get receipts if you can. Why not an EG or EK?

Woodzy
25-03-2011, 05:29 PM
I wouldn't touch it, there's heaps of other EG's or EK's out there that are decent...

timmy_honda
25-03-2011, 05:30 PM
Yeah, I know, but I'll go and see the car in person. I'll try to get some proofs.
I don't know man, I'm just not a fan of the EK.
Is it a bad idea to get an old car like that?

V8KLLR
25-03-2011, 05:32 PM
Yea its getting old dude. The only efficient and reliable ED's I see are restored track/project cars. I wouldnt recommend it as a daily, probably stuff up on you cause I know you'll thrash it here and there. and 3.5K is alot of money, invest in something more recent.

Age is a factor, you could always try and find an EG with around 150k...

I was lucky to get my EK1 with 140k and it's a one owner for 4k :P

Woodzy
25-03-2011, 05:50 PM
yes lol

Stock height?

I was thinking of 16's or 17's for my civic.

No issues with the wheels rubbing up in the guards when going over speed bumps/dips in the road, and easy to turn into the guards?

eren
25-03-2011, 05:53 PM
ok its ok bro nvm
and its not stock height its been lifted up alittle and im planing to lower it if i dont sell it

timmy_honda

o um, i just got a reply from the guy. Unfortunately, no actual records on service history of the car, but the car owner states that his dad is a mechanic, so he just services it every 6 months, but yeah, he will send me a photo of the engine bay to me tonight.
ONE MORE QUESTION! If the engine bay is really clean, does it necessarily mean that the car has been well taken care of?
Cheers :)

eren
25-03-2011, 05:57 PM
not really beacause you can easliy degreas the engine but when you check the engine yourself you can tell

eren
25-03-2011, 05:58 PM
btw i can help look for a car for you tell me :
your limit
what model

and also Manual or Auto

timmy_honda

o Thanks bro,
well my limit is like 3000-4000 dollars (cuz it's my first car and I'm still going to school lol)
and model I really don't mind, but prefer eg over the ek :)
and Ks, ideally i'm looking at 150,000kms to 170,000kms but if the engine bay looks magnificent, then it wouldn't be a problem i guess?
I'm ok with both manual and auto
thanks mate :D

eren
25-03-2011, 06:03 PM
I also am a noob but what i would check for is:
1. Startup Time
2.The Smell of the oil and colour if its really black its Crap
3.Belt
4.Alternator
5.Radiator
6.manual (clutch slipping) auto (When Gears Change If its Jumpy thats bad)
7.Sound if u can hear sounds that dont feel right to you Dont bother
Lol i think thats it

If your on your L's and 16 dont bother. I was 18 when i got my ek, had it for 6 months before i got my P's. Rego is about 550 a year and third party fire and theft is $850. You gonna be 18 till you can drive it. So you gonna spend about 2.6-3k on the car for 2 years and your barely gonna drive it being on your L's.

But anyways if your in Vic west side i could show u what to look for i spose.

timmy_honda
25-03-2011, 10:13 PM
I'm sure in NSW you can get your Ps when you're 17?
but yeh, I've done all my hours, all i need is a car so i can get my Ps :)

timmy_honda
26-03-2011, 08:56 AM
omg no i'm still waiting lol
cuz the guy works at a pub so yeah,
but apparently, he just replaced a new gearbox, so i guess that's a good thing, because it has lower chance of breaking down? lol i have NO idea

eren
26-03-2011, 09:05 AM
if its replaced thats kinda bad coz if the old one was bad then the car must be bad,

timmy_honda
26-03-2011, 09:29 AM
that's what i was thinking as well, but its replaced, then doesn't it mean like you wouldn't have any problems with it in the next few years cuz it's new?
meh i don't know
but yeh, i got the photos :)

I was looking for a car 2 months ago and the one advice i can give u is be patient and try and extend you budget as much as possible

I borrowed 3k from my parents and when i look at the type of car i would have gotten for 3k and compare it to my current car which I bought for 6k its amazing at the diffrence.
I did pay a bit higher for my car btw but it was cause it was in excellent condition for its age.

I ended up buying a 1996 Civic CXI that had just over 118,000kms on the clock and came with full service history as well as log books plus im the second owner and the previous owner always serviced their car at a Honda dealership so I knew the work being carried out on the car was well done.

Thanks for the advice guys :D
yeah, I'm in no rush, I offered him $1500 but he said nah $3250
i actually laughed out loud, like I was just being realistic about the car,
$1500 that's what I would pay for an 1991 ed really. He told me $1500 was the amount he had spent on the car,
but in reality...I do not care, people spend thousands of money to modify their car, they can't just "pass" the costs to the new buyers...

Have a look at dealerships as well as sometimes you can get a good deal plus you have a lot more buying power over a dealer as they usually want to get rid of the car fast and dont have any sentimental value over it.

I just got my car a few weeks ago, search everywhere! Carsales, here, other forums, ebay, firesport every internet site you can find. Even post "WTB" threads on every forum, I was lucky I got pm'd by a guy selling a mint EG and he had not advertised it yet. Got myself a good deal, and a good car. Its all about patience, take your time and get the right car so it doesn't cost you more down the track. And try to get a RWC with it, I'm glad i did. Saved a massive headache and money.

i was on the same boots as you when i was 16-17 i wanted a car asap, but i didnt until i was 18.
If you wait, you can get more money saved up for a EFI car not a carby...
carbys requires more maintenance...which could be more money and give you more headaches...

I did the same and i picked up a EG vti with d16y1 vtec engine clean as a sheep for 4.7k.

but in the end its all up to you. i'm just suggesting not to rush and play it slow and safe.
good luck

Vtec and Tsol0811 are on the right track. Personally ill go with what tsol said and save up a bit more for the EFI. Worth the extra $$

meh dont get a carby car - save a bit more and get a Gli EG sedan or hatch
we have had ours for over 5 years and 320kms and still runs like the day we bought it
it was my second car

my first car was a 87 corolla flat back i got for $300 - spent $20 fixing it up - detailed it - used it as a daily for 2 years never missed a beat - rallied it in the bush redneck style a few weekends than sold it for $600 lol

Yeah like alot of others are saying. Just save up $$$ and get a newer model car. Atleast one with EFI. I waited for like 2 years to save up and I am glad I did. Got something a lot nicer and was worth what I paid for it. If you want a hatchback maybe even try for the top of line VTi EG model from 93 - 95. Some are in your price range but have a few too many k's.

But if you do want to buy a Black 95 VTi EG for $6500 I have one for sale hehehehe. Buy an eg hatch or ek hatch. Everyone else will agree. They look phat as, they perform great, and there is so many cheap mods that you can get out there. Save a little but not too much.
Even an ed hatch. I got one for free, mind you it was slow as, but it was great for a daily, carbureutted, easy to repair, cheap to register, to drive, and you can fit a shitload in it. Much like a jazz :P
Then if you end up getting a phat CRX, the parts are mostly interchangeable ;)

The feel of driving round something man that is your pride and joy, is the best feeling you will ever feel. Guaranteed. Just get an EG or EK I reckon. Anything newer is just not as cool :P
