View Full Version : My Blue RB3 Odyssey

Philip Lee

hi,

just want to say i finally bought my Odyssey. it's a RB3 blue luxury and a major change from an EP3. i didn't realise how big the ODC is until i parked it in the garage.

i'm both happy and sad at the moment. Happy with the nice features and comfort of the RB3 but i really miss the power and handling of the Type R. for those who are running coilovers, does it improve the handling significantly?

there are a few plans for the car, tints, Nav HU + rear cam and speakers, some interior bits and pieces, parking sensors, maybe fitting my rays and install Teins.

first pic, what do you think about this colour combo?

Nice purchase!! what color of the 18" rim is? i think either bright or diamond cut polish suit this blue body color. coilover definitely improve handling and ride quality from pax point of view but do not expect like an EP3. May be a set of sway bar will close up the gap a bit between RB3 and EP3 hehe

Again welcome to Odyssey family and happy modding!!

Welcome the the Odyssey old man club!

Hmmm colour combo is pretty standard I guess. Haven't seen many in that blue.

As AusAccord said, from a RB1 stand point the coilovers helped quite a bit, never driven an EP3R before so can't compare, but it feels better than my FD1 on Tein springs, comfort suffers though.

Philip Lee

the wheel in the pic is bronze in 18". some ppl say bronze suits dark blue ok but some don't. i think it's ok, besides i don't have budget to spend on wheels lol

at the moment, i find RB3 is too comfy. there is no feel from the steering and susspension and the rear bounced along with the road. it just lacks any road feel.

not expected the handling from EP3 but middle ground would be good. also the gap between guard and tyre definitely need closing up haha.

i don't think there are much diff between the RB3 and RB1 apart from look. chassis and drivetrain are pretty much similar.

would 10k spring rates be too firm? that's what Teins are doing for Odyssey.

thanks

Common complain is that on stock suspension the rear bounces too much and the 3rd row ppl vomit.. Hahaha

AusAccord
04-04-2011, 02:33 PM
i would prefer my RB1 drives like RB3 as yours is much smoother even only 6kw more as i remember. also GruippeM has intake kit for RB3 but none on RB1. only down side on RB3 i reckon is without tiptronic gearbox for family men haha

may be gold/dark bronze color will look good on blue. mine is 8k and now i found is pretty firm due to wore out by Sydney roads for 3 yrs *crying*
just curious, why Tein instead of other brands?

Philip Lee
04-04-2011, 02:53 PM
i must say RB3 is very smooth. it was better than i thought.

no intention on power mod so Gruppe M is a no go.

i like Tein because Street Basic is cheap lol i've had Super Street on my Mx5 and EP3 and they seems to be ok for street use and handling definitely improved. for RB3 i'm only looking for ride height adjustments so i dun need the 16 clicks. also the fact that Fulcrum Suspension can rebuild Tein locally is something that i like.

what else is popular for lowering?

third row is strictly for carrying stuff and only when used for emergency so it's fine but i'll make sure i carry some plastic bags in the car hahaha

one more thing, what do you guys run as muffler/exhaust tip? i saw many JDM people put S2k tips and are they easily interchangable? stock tips are definitely too small and in a weird angle!!

thanks

How much does it usually cost to rebuild a set of coilovers?

Is it worth rebuilding or just throw away and change?

Philip Lee
04-04-2011, 04:25 PM
good question. probably around 50 - 70% cost of brand new but once rebuilt its like brand new.

sorry noob question, what is YAJ? thanks

AusAccord
04-04-2011, 04:27 PM
good to hear that then i just buy another set than rebuild. sorry YAJ = Yahoo Auction Japan. Ask how much from Honda dealer 1st as you may not want getting stuffs from Japan at this stage.

http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?125618-Mugen-RB3-ODC-Aero-Dynamics&p=2602273&viewfull=1#post2602273

Might want to consider Mugen or Modulo suspension, heard they are pretty comfy, only problem is that they are not adjustable and cost about the same a coilovers.

its not power mod, its more perception mods haha. sounds wave gets into you brain then convert it to energy makes you feel like driving a R35. once energy hits then makes you feel young again. thats why an intake and exhaust are a must for modding, you know what i mean hehe

congrats Phil on your new ride,

so the Bugs Mod never ended,

since you getting stuff from Japan you should just get a new rims but 2nd hand and your Odys would look much better, bcoz that Rays SE-37 is just too old for the car mate, and again you need to buy a new tyres otherwise is just too small for the Odys

so you still coming in June ?

Philip Lee
05-04-2011, 11:50 AM
i know Laski but i don't have the budget right now to spend $2k + on rims. would love a set of 19s but sat nav, coilovers etc take priority over wheels.

as to June, i'm still waiting for Ken to make his decision. just spoke to him this morning and he will let me know soonish.

would love your assistance as i can trust you 200% on your work but it depends on Ken now. once he tells me he is staying then i'll email you for the detail.

so when is Kenwood releasing their new Sat Nav HU?

thanks.

question about brake pads.

does odyssey share the pads with other Honda models?

thanks

AusAccord

good question, honestly do not know. everytime i search on aftermarket pad on CL9, FD2R, RB1/3, they have different part nr so no definitely answer. even different pads size on just RB1 as Japanese has L type which running 282mm front rotor and ours is 300mm. someone can correct me if i'm wrong.

06-04-2011, 03:56 PM
^^ not quite true as well. if you do the actual measurement, i'm sure it will share with other models especially FD2R and CL7R. we just have no definitely answer and data base to support this unless someone really tried.

FYI, i know Project Mu full 4pot kit for CL7R is a direct bolt onto RB1 with 300mm OEM rotor because someone did it already. But i can't say another brand full 4pot kit be the same.

Hi Phillip.. if you don't mind me asking, what springs are those, where did you get them, and how much? I want to lower my RB3 as well..

Philip Lee
30-06-2011, 03:25 PM
hi Adrian.

they are Tanabe NF210 http://www.rd-tanabe.com/lineup/sustec/nf210/index.html

got them from Yahoo Auction Japan via an agent. i was lucky to pay around 20,000 yen + EMS. usually they are around 40,000 yen + EMS.

they are reasonably soft so the ride doesn't suffer too much but handling improved quite a bit. but you will need to be careful over speed bumps etc

Adrian128

Thanks Phillip.. I'll check out Yahoo Auctions..

Philip Lee
01-07-2011, 09:37 AM
no worries mate.

there are other brands like RSR, Teins etc.

choose carefully as the ride height and stiffness varies. for example RSR has about 4 different springs for RB3. anything with 30-35mm drops (like mine) would be the maximum without scrapping anything. if u need to carry load and or 7 people at lot, you will need something less aggressive again like 20 - 25mm.

if i have to pay full price, i'd probably get RSR Ti2000 with the rear slightly higher to offset weight. i only got Tanabe becos of the price but i'm not regretting. but i wish the rear is 5mm higher in case i need to carry load.

if you have more question, feel free to ask.

Philip Lee
07-07-2011, 11:58 AM
thanks. you might want to get RSR half low or Tein Hi-tech. they drop around 20-25mm so should be ok.

my Tanabe drops by 30-40mm. i have 1 and a bit finger gap up front and 1 finger gap at the back. i think this is the maximum drop or will start scrapping with loads.

Winno
09-07-2011, 04:02 PM
Your car is looking very nice there with the slight drop.
I will probably keep my wheels for a while but did want to lower the car a little. I also have an RB3 Lux.

I do have to keep in mind that I may go for some 18"x 8J x ET? wheels at some stage, but more importantly, I don't want to sacrifice the ride comfort.
In choosing springs, I want something that will drop the car about 30mm and is very close to the feel that the factory set up gives with perhaps only a very small increase in firmness, rather than going softer.

Would you say that the Tanabe springs you have keep the same feel and would allow for a larger/wider wheel?
Also, if you don't mind, how much in AU$ did they cost shipped?
And what's the cost for fitting, including any camber adjustment, etc?
What part number are these?

I've had a Tanabe exhaust on my Subaru years ago and the quality was very good. So, I have no problem with their other products.

Cheers,
Steve

Philip Lee
10-07-2011, 11:19 AM
the tanabe springs i have (NF210) has slightly softer rate at the front and slightly harder at the back. but since it's a fixed rate springs as opposed to stock progressive, they feel more directly and slightly firmer. i think it's a good compromise. however if u need to carry load a lot, i suggest go for RSR because their rear spring rate is a little harder and should in theory avoid scrapping more than my Tanabe. however i recently drove from Brisbane to Sydney for a holiday with the family. 2 adults, 2 kids and a week's luggage and never scrapped anything. can't say about fitting 7 people tho as i never tried. also i am still on stock wheels so i don't know how ride will be effected with lower profile tyres.

i got the springs with other bits and pieces so i don't know the exact amount for shipping for the springs alone. i got the springs from Yahoo Auction Japan and it was from a private seller (still brand new) so my price is a one off. i suggest you ask some import agents directly for quote.

cost for fitting was $250 as the rear pairs a slightly harder to fit without taking off all the interior trims. i was happy to pay a little more for my mechanics to avoid that. you will also need rear camber arm when you drop your car. you may want to buy this together with your springs from japan as there are more choices. they can be around 20000 yen to 30000 yen depends on brand (without shipping to Aus). natural camber for the front should be enough.

overall i'm happy with my springs. if i have to pay full price i'd go RSR for the higher rear spring rate just in case.

Winno

Ok, great feedback.
Will start looking around for what I can do and what I need to get.

thanks.

yes they are AME XF-55 in 19x8+48. offset is good for the front but slightly weak for the back but i haven't fixed up my alignment yet and hopefully with some rear camber adjustment the rear will look better.
