Hey all, ok basically i finally got the epa notice, massive depressed over this thing.... since it was a mates fault, **** sucker... im not gonna go into details, but anyways, the rules are if the car is below 98 decibels its okay, now the thing is at what do the test the sound readings at?

At what rpm do they go up to before backing off? im just considering my options atm, as i dont wanna take off my catback... if its below the level, than ill just leave it on :D

they usually rev it to about 5,000rpm i think, just make sure your car doesn't go bang bang when backing off. Sucks to hear man

by the way u dont have change the whole catback....just remove the axle back and bolt on stock exhaust.

im gonna need to as the cat back is a 2.5, an the stock is 2, too much of a change, an i think there mite be a leak as the flanges are different sizes to stock axle back, and id rather not take my chances if it doesn't pass cause it back fired

they have a little microphone thing on a stand about 20-30 cm away from the exhaust tip, and then they rev it to a certain rev and get the reading. mine got done at 4700rpm.

and they cant do it when its raining either.

i would personally put the stock exhaust on just to be safe, should take a couple of hours including reinstalling the old exhaust.

it costs 70$ to do and liek 50$ to redo if you fail. its not worth it. just put stock muffler back on. Its just 2 bolts man =D

Well the test cost 39.xx if I remember correctly, Lukey is right they put the mic ~30cm from the exhaust tip on a certain angle aswell. As for the revving, they rev it up to half the redline from what I remember. I did the EPA test on my motorbike so not 100% its the same as cars. My bike redlined at 12500, so they revved it to 6250.

ah geez.. 6250rpm, lol, thats almost my redline hahahaha

But yeah, i guess thats a good indication, since mines at 7000rpm, so around 3.5k hopefully they do the test at

Lukey
05-04-2011, 06:10 PM
my redline is about 7k and the test was done at 4750

Yeh i did it on my bike, maybe thats why its a bit different. Might be half of your maximum rev or something, pretty sure its some type of equation, they cant just rev it to whatever they like.

i have headers, test pipe and a catback.. when i got done for being too loud i just swapped the rear muffler for my stock one.. my car got 85 decibels.. if ur stock muffler still lines up and bolts up, just swap it over man it will pass for sure, if it fails the test ill shout u the next one ;)

This is right! 5000rpm, 30cm away from exhaust tip at roughly 45 degree angle.

Hot tip aswell, from experience!

"When ever driving through booze bus, cop roadblock, try real hard to stay in a higher gear so the car doesn't rev too loud, they quite often have EPA and cops who are trained in rwc listening or the loud exhaust note".

Good tip! cops are gettin smarter, they not only hear but take a good long look at whats poking out the rear bum

they are suppose to rev diff to every engine..'

40$ to do the test

my k20 was done at about 4,400 at the first place

2nd place i did it was done at 4,000rpm and told me that was the specs they do for non standard engine

i just got a exhaust shop at dandenong to weld on a pee-shooter for me from my 2.5" to 2" .. they dont modify anything out of your old exhaust so i can plug anyone of them whenever i want.. costed me 150$

hope that helps..
pm me if u have more questions!!

Pics of this so called "pee-shooter"

05-04-2011, 11:02 PM
lol..its too far ...

its just a small oval muffler with like a 1.5" outlet.. then they weld the flange to fit your existing flange.

made it sound like oem...

Where did you get 98dB from?

The limit is 90db(A) for vehicles after 1988

This (http://epanote2.epa.vic.gov.au/EPA/Publications.nsf/d85500a0d7f5f07b4a2565d1002268f3/e9a3b54956ac6b18ca256d16007b66e8/$FILE/317.1.pdf) contains everything you need to know including testing procedure and which RPM they will test your vehicle at.

In short, you have no chance of passing without the stock catback.

oh yea mine was done at 90db to :P

and yes you can just pass with a pee-shooter muffler sometimes :D

Yeah its infact 90db, says it on one of the letters... which than i doubt any aftermarket cat back would pass, mugen twin loop as well....

I found my old axle back, but now i just need a any ek b-pipe to attach it on.... 2 more weeks till i have to fix this problem, with uni, it makes it hard to go an find parts :(

Exactly what I did as well, went to Dandenong and had them fit a 2inch pea-shooter; they then guaranteed that I would pass so I tested it. 90db @ 4500, then 93db on back off (the popping sound). Frustrated, I went to a friend who is part engineer/DIY guy and got him to work his magic (so to speak), went to test in Box Hill and cleared. Man that pea-shooter was awful..
