View Full Version : D15b7 with d16y8 head - should i put in the d16y8 gearbox too?
Ive got a dilemma,
I got a a d16y8 head and all stuff needed to put onto the d15b7.
The question is should i get the d16y8 gearbox attached to the d15b7?
since i got it as well?
or would it even fit?
would i even benefit with acceleration from shorter ratios?
or would it be the same as having the d15 gearbox in there?
i havent done this conversion yet and im still up in the air about this.

Should fit, wouldn't make much difference.

YES YES YES
it will bolt on and it is the best possible available gearbox for the D series
make sure you labell it as a D16y8 gearbox though because once they are removed from the engine its impossible to tell the difference between a y8 and a y5 gearbox
the y5 doesnt have the good ratios though but it is still lavelled an S40 B000 not S40 A000 like all the other crapper ratio box's
make sure you get an Exedy Clutch and Flywheel kit put in with the box as well
i would also recommend j's racing or skunk2 bolts for the sump and transmission
and Neo Gold trans fluid
are you converting to 0bd2 for the head? or converting the head to 0bd1?
are you going to do a build-thread for you mini-me conversion?
i would be VERY interested to see how it pans out
have a look in my build thread for pics of a S20 B000 JDM D15b box going onto a D15b7 with D16a6 cam and D16z6 intake manifold =p
I didnt intend to do a build thread cos I was not sure whether i should do it myself or just get someone with the knowledge to do it. (where i live now is not viable to leave my tools and bits on the ground.)

Well for the D16Y8 Head.
Planning to buy the adapter for obd2 to obd1 and ive read up on details about the whole mini me swap.
-----------------------------
I dont understand gearbox jargon that much, but from just skimming forums about the gearbox, apparently the 3rd,4th gears are long...
--------------------
the other dilemma is, should I remove the engine from the ej8 and sell it along with gearbox and loom to get myself a ported/reconditioned z6 head since its obd1. and be patient to find a CRX Del Sol Gearbox - since I heard these have short ratios. and just source other ecu, etc.
dont know what to do, either have all parts to do it, but essentially have stock ej8 parts on the car, or source it all separate to have a better package overall.
----
as for flywheels and sumps, im not thinking of at this moment.
its this mini me conversion, lowering, aus spec spoiler (i missed purchasing another members auto eg6 sedan with that spoiler!) - i just want a spoiler.
Also, Ive been following your thread (casually) Im curious at your power output and a rough 0-100km? if possible.

the del sol gearbox wont work as they all came with B16 - only in america did they get the SOHC engines (ie D15b7 and D16z6)
i would keep the D16y8 gearbox - they are extremely hard to find and usually sell for well over $800 on their own
like i said though - make sure u stencil D16Y8 in big letters on it - because its a pain not knowing if its a y8 or y5 box
over all the 2 gearbox's that are better than the ones we have stock are the S20 B000 (which came with USDM and JDM 0BD1 D15 and D16 - possibly the AUSDM D16y1 but not sure)
and the S40 B000 (which only came on the D16y8 and D16y5 - the y8 being the only one that has the shorter ratios)
(the normal gearbox's are labeled S40 A000 or S20 A000)
they have shorter ratios than the stock D15/D16's and have much better acceleration - but you will loose a little fuel consumption because they rev a little higher in 5th gear cruising
i got a massive gain on my D15b7 from getting the JDM D15b gearbox over my stock D15b7 (some of the JDM D15b gearbox's come stock with LSD but you have more chance of winning the lottery than finding one)
have you considered doing the A6 cam Z6 intake manifold build?
its cheaper and has similar results to a mini-me
i still havnt been able to clock the power output or have it fine tuned
but i will have a 0-100 and 1/4 mile time up soon (its getting brakes done atm)

Saint, I thought the Y4 was the box with better ratios? And would it make such a big difference?

not sure about the y4 - it didnt come up at all when i did the research for my box
and yes - it made a huge difference on my car
this was installed with a exedy oe clutch and exedy flywheel
and since than i have done the shifter bushings as well
couldnt be happier
Ok, I can rule out del sol box.
Really My gearbox cost that much?
I didnt think nothing of it, I saw it as a burden on the ej8 if i took the head and loom off - so i had thrown out the question if it was even futile to put the gearbox into the eg.
Damn id just sell it then & put money back into resurrecting the ej8 with a whole b16 conversion, if I could get around that mark for the ej8 gearbox.
Your build thread Ive been waiting on data - very keen to see the figures, costs and results. - to go down the same path like your ride, im not sure, because I want to see all these things first.
Personally for me I take into consideration of the knowledge you have for the Honda gearboxes, but if I was to do this conversion I would only go vtec route and work around that, to also re-consider the appeal of resale of my car, or have a slight advantage when it comes to selling it.
at the moment, TheSaint, you have spun me out about the price of my gearbox, now its the other way around, is my eg even worth to put an $800 gearbox into it? O_O

well - to buy one you would pay in between $800 and $1200
but to sell one - i have no idea
my JDM D15b gearbox was $700 and its not as good as a y8 box
it depends what you want tho - the reason i built mine was more of an experiment and to give me something to do - i was never chasing numbers
the main mods for the engine i did were:
- USDM D16a6 cam - $50
- USDM D16z6 intake manifold - $100
- Hondata IM gasket - $80
- JDM D15b gearbox - $700
- Bisi cam gear - $100
- Simota whale intake - $120
- N*power headers - $150
- catback inc muffler - $300ish
- ebay FPR - $40
- ES engine mount inserts - $100
- ES shifter kit - $20
- engine bay tuck
- various paint, touchup, seals, gaskets, oil, fluids, hoses etc
i spent more on suspension/chassis/wheels/tyres/brakes as well
building the D15 will be the cheapest option, the D15/y8 mini-me will probably be the hardest option but be the most fun and the B16a will overall be the best of everything
its a hard decision - the real problem is - can you SELL the gearbox for $800 - it may just sit in ur shed for 12months
i had a Mugen Catback for my Dc2 - it never got installed because the car got written off before it arrived
i paid $1450 for it and had it up for sale for ages - i had to keep stepping the price down and eventually 2 years later i finally sold it for $800
so the problem is actually selling it - personally i would stick to your plans - mini-me the D15 with the y8 gearbox and some nice supporting mods
i wouldnt worry about resale - you can get a B18cR ek now for $7k .... cars arnt worth anything anymore =/
